2516.0. "Bad habits are hard to break" by DROPIT::BENHAM () Fri May 26 1989 10:44

What makes a good cat suddenly become a bad cat?

I have to Maine Coons, Katie who is 2 years old and Toby who is
7 months old. Toby is going to the Vets to be neutered on June
1st. They are good cats except for two things. Katie never
covers her mess when she uses the litter box, she tries, but
she usually scratches the floor instead of inside the box. Toby,
when he first arrived, always covered his mess, but after living
with Katie has picked up her habit and now neither one of them cover
    their messes.

The other problem with the cats is suddenly Toby has decided that
our bed would be a nice place to deposit his mess. In one week
he has messed on our bed three times. The first time no one was
home, the second time I had already left for work and when my kids
got up they found the mess, the third time we weren't even out of
bed yet. Needless to say, when we leave the bedroom the cats are
    not allowed in.

Can anyone explain these behaviors and what I can do to correct
    them.

    Thanks
    Carole

It sounds like you think that not covering the "mess" in the
litterbox is a problem. I wouldn't worry about that - buy
    a covered litterbox.

Going on the bed, now, that's another matter. I can think
    of two reasons.
    1. The cat has parasites. Have the vet check a stool sample for
    worms.
    2. Territorial battle. Dundee messed on our bed when he was a
little guy. The bed was hotly contested territory. You might
try giving him his own box and/or reaping lavish praise on
him when he uses it. positive reinforcement is more effective
    than negative.

Perhaps other feliners have some other suggestions for you.
      Good luck
       Nancy DC

p.s. I wonder if Toby's budding "maturity" could have anything
to do with his behavior. Unneutered males are VERY territorial.

Also try to think back and find ANY little change that
might be disrupting your household right now, esp from
a cat's point of view. They don't like changes and new
    	things in THEIR homes.....

The bed can become pretty hotly contested between cats. The day
we picked up Dream and Boogie, I had other commitments and my
husband brought them in to Charm and Niniane by himself. Well, Niniane
wasn't too happy with him, and she showed her displeasure by pooping
smack dab in the center of *his* side of the bed! I personally
thought it was rather amusing and that Nin was pretty smart to
figure out *whose* side of the bed was responsible for this
unwanted turn of events - needless to say, he didn't share my
    enthusiasm!

She only did it once, although if I don't keep the litterbox up
to standards, the girls will "remind" me by pooping on the carpet
    just outside the box.

Carole - I wouldn't worry about your cats not covering up their
messes. My two Ragdolls, Kelsey and Shelby, rarely covered up their
poops. I was worried too and had several fecal tests done to determine
if something might be physically wrong. You know what we finally
discovered? Their poops smelled so bad due to the grocery store food
I was feeding (Whiskas, Friskies, Sheba) that they probably didn't
want to get their little paws dirty covering it up!! I notice that
when I feed foods like Trimph and Old Mother Hubbard canned, as
well as good quality dry foods like Iams, Blue Seal, and Bil-Jac,
they are much more willing to cover up their messes. You didn't
mention what types of food you feed but that could have something
    to do with it.

In regards to the other problem, I agree with the previous replies
about something possibly being "out of sync" in their environment.
Cats are sensitve animals and react to things that we wouldn't even
    bat an eyelash about!

Hope this info helps; good luck! I love Maine Coons. Your babies
    must be beautiful!!
