2401.0. "My Little Chickadee" by RATTLE::OLEARY () Tue Apr 25 1989 16:45

Dusty has a new form of entertainment that has turned into an
obsession!! My grandparents gave my husband a chickadee bird-feeder
and my husband put it up outside our diningroom window. Guess where
Dusty spends almost ALL his time now?! It is hilarious. The first
couple of days he was in there after dark - he didn't understand
that his feathered friends wouldn't be at the feeder. He is so
engrossed that he doesn't even beg for breakfast anymore!! Just
can't be torn away from his birdwatching.

The chickadees, by the way, totally ignore him!

I'm wondering when the NOVELTY will WEAR OFF.

Bird Feeders are day-time TV for Cats - bugs on the screens in the
evening = Prime Time TV for Cats.

When the birds are at my feeders on the porch, they ignore the
cats that are watching and making all kinds of throaty noises
at them (even with all the windows open). You would think that
the birds could smell the cats and be fearful of being eaten or
something. Mostly, it's noise that I make at the kitchen sink
that will scare them away. They are even used to the water
running in the sink - they fly away when I drop silverware or
make noise with pots or pans.

We hung a hummingbird feeder just outside the living room window.
Our 8 foot cat tree is on the inside next to the window and the
cats line the shelves of the cat tree and chatter all day long.

The hummingbirds seem to like to tease the cats. After they finish
feeding, they will come right up to the window and hover there for
awhile. They even come around when the feeder is empty.

We have been considering getting an aquarium too, since the birds
aren't around in the evening. Another form of Cat TV, and just
like MTV, it is on 24 hours a day.

    Ack!

Be careful with the aquarium.. although you probably won't have
any problems.. I remember being a little kid about eight years
old or so and coming home one night after eating out with my parents..
the two cats we had at the time at dipped there paws in the tank
and gotton out two Silver Dollors (fishies..)...

I remember when I first got mumma kitty as a stray I was living
in a one room studio and felt bad for her inside all day in such
a small place so I put bird see all over the balcony and also got
    a feeder..

She would sit at the window all day!

2401.4Should we get them remote controls??PENPAL::TRACHMANTue Apr 25 1989 20:1120
    re:2

    About 10 + years ago (when I just had 2 cats) I had 2 tanks 29 gallons
high - I had to make very sure the covers were on VERY tight with
no spaces for little siamese paws - the girls would sit for hours
watching the fish (large fancy fantail goldfish). I washed the
front of the tanks to remove paw prints, more than I had to wash
    my windows !

Now, when the birds are eating, they drop seeds on the porch floor-
the squirels hang around on the porch to snatch what falls from
the feeders - the cats really go nutzy when there are 2 or 3
squirels fighting over what the birds drop - I have the 5 feeders
hung so the squirels can't get to them. The cat chatter is something
else to hear - they sit on the back of the couch (7 or 8 cats) and
their tails are all swishing back & forth! It's a hoot!

Ha, I just put up a bird feeder for aja too!

Apparently the birds are cooperating. When the little ones come,
they take a seed and pound on the feeder to break it open. Aja
knows this is her cue (queue?) and hops up on the counter to
    check it out.

The blue jays, however, are rood and stoopid. They don't knock
but just take the food and run...

I know this is kinda late reply to this note, but it seemd like
the best place to put it. Behind our home is nearly all scrub oak
and we keep an old aluminum baking dish, weighted down with a couple
of short pieces of 2x4, filled with bird seed on the deck. Every
morning one or more of the local bunnies(who live in the woodpile)
comes up for breakfast. Most of the rest of the day, all sorts
of birds are around. This year is seems as though a bluejay family
has built their nest somewhere in the scrub oak directly behind
the house and big, macho daddy bird feels it's his job to protect
mama and the nest from these "awful" cats that are always looking
at the bird thru the deck door or the screeb, if we have the door
open. Doobie, our chunky black and white, who looks like a panda
bear, just like to watch the pretty birds and doesn't chatter or
anything, but Peaches, our orange and white shorthair gets really
"bugged" by the scolding by the jay. We have a chair sitting on
the deck very near the door and the jay sits on the arm of the chair
and Peaches gets his face right up to the screen and he and the
bird have a fine old time "cussing" back and forth. They are only
about 18" apart. Sometimes, I think Peaches chin is going to fall
off for chattering so hard and fast. Like a previous reply, Daytime
    TV for cats!
