2353.0. "Hellllp....the fur is starting to fly!" by LEDS::OBRIENR () Mon Apr 03 1989 20:09

We recently adopted a beautiful oriental shorthair thru
the notes file. Mona is 1-year old spayed female with
the biggest, bluest eyes I've ever seen. She is the most
affectionate cat I've ever known; she just can't get
enough human contact ('human' being the operative word).

We've only had her a week, so she may just be going thru an
adjustment period, but she is extremely anti-social with
our other two cats. At first she would growl and hiss
at Sadie & Sammie (two, 1-year old females) whenever they
came within 10 feet of her, and seemed to be afraid of them
(though they were merely exhibiting curiosity, and were not
intimidating her). Now, she is becoming more aggressive and
is chasing Sadie & Sammie all over the condo, growling
and hissing at them as they scurry for the nearest hiding
	place.

We've only had Mona a short time, but are becoming very
attached to her, and would hate to give her up. But if this
situation continues we'll have to find her a new home.

Sooo, does anybody out there have any ideas, suggestions, or
comments which might help us to socialize Mona?

	Ron

2353.1Hmmmm, sounds like "Dream"....SWAT::COCHRANEStanding, stretching every nerveMon Apr 03 1989 20:2214
Sounds like an Oriental to me!! I adopted Dream in
November, a white oriental. After ignoring us all
for the first three weeks, she proceeded to chase
my other three mercilessly around the house!!! There
were some very wounded feelings for a couple of months,
but now, about 6 months later, they are smoothing out
somewhat. Orientals are wonderful, loving, and yes,
demanding cats, and Dream is the undisputed
queen of the household (aka "Mommy's Little Princess").

Send me mail off-line if you'd like more details.

You will have to give them time to work out their pecking order.
Cats do not always take to newcomers right off the bat. They have
to have time to get to know each other. The best thing that you
could do is trim their nails, and let them work it out. In order
to avoid taking sides, stay out of their fights (unless they are
*really* trying to kill each other).

2353.3Stand back and watch it fly..DRFIX::IVESI'm my own PersianTue Apr 04 1989 01:4014
We introduced a new cat to our household last October and things
went very smoothly, HOWEVER about once a month my two now decide
it's time to try and rip each other apart and fur flies and we get
out the squirt bottle and maybe yell a little. Like, "WHAT ARE YOU
KITTIES DOING?" This may go on for a couple of days and then peace
reigns again, and you forget about those disagreements, and then they
    are at it again.

I personally don't know anyone who doesn't have this problem even
after the pecking order has been settled.

    They will quite down.

re: .3 - very true. Mao and Isis have started the old
sibling rivalry again. Isis chases Mao around with a bottle
brush tail and Mao growls and hisses and tries to hide.
I really hate it when they do this and suspect that it has
something to do with other cats in the yard, which they
consider their territory. Since they can't get to the
invaders they take it out on each other.
I yell at them and chase one or the other of them off.
Usually its Isis as Mao tries to run away and hide and
Isis chases her and keeps teasing.
      Anyone got any suggestions?

2353.5Squirt so your throat won't hurtYOSMTE::CORDESBRO_JOTue Apr 04 1989 18:567
One suggestion for you Nancy, don't bother yelling at them, you
just waste your breath. Squirt both parties whenever a fight starts,
no matter who started it. Best not to appear to take sides by
punishing only one. It takes two to tango, know matter whose idea
    it is.

re: squirt - I don't know Jo. Jack seems to think this is alot
of fun....squirting cats that is....and I have to yell at him!
(Seriously, I'll give it a try - usually Mao is out of range anyway
    behind the bed or something)

Must be catching, this men with the squirt bottle thing. Dana also
loves to park it by the bed at night and let them have it when they're
messing up the drapes or knocking things off the night stands!!

re: men and squirt bottles. I have come to the conclusion that
there is a "brat" gene that is on the Y chromosome only because
ALL men seem to be brats!
Or maybe they just never grow up.

2353.13Water polo....SWAT::COCHRANEStanding, stretching every nerveThu Apr 06 1989 14:5913
Hmmm, this could be a trend. Ian sits in the loft with the
squirt bottle. Kitty claws stairs, Ian gets kitty from loft
railing. Kitty get startled, runs upstairs, Ian gets kitty
in hallway, kitty runs downstairs, Ian gets kitty from loft....
etc. We call it the "shooting gallery" because of the way
the kitties run back and forth!!!

Dream got the best of him, though. She figured out how far
the water goes, and claws the carpet just out of reach, looking
him straight in the eye with her "bold as brass" gaze the whole
    time!!! ;-)

2353.14A typical morning with ShelbyFSHQA2::RWAXMANA Cat Makes a Purrfect FriendThu Apr 06 1989 15:4319
Yeah, Shelby has gotten to the point where when he goes to do something
wrong, he looks at Dana to make sure he isn't watching then proceeds
to knock vase of flowers over, kill the kleenex box, etc. He (Shelby)
has this morning ritual where he gets onto the nightstand next to
the bed (my side) and knocks everything off, one by one; first the
vase of silk flowers, then the kleenex box, then the telephone,
(he's currently trying to push the lamp but it's too heavy). This
is his not-so-subtle way of saying, MOM, TIME TO GET UP, I WANT
MY BREAKFAST - NOW! NOW!! NOW!!! He does this at exactly the
same time every morning and as soon as the vase (wicker, thank God)
crashes to the floor, Dana reaches for the squirt bottle (his side
of the bed) and Shelby goes flying off the night stand.

It's a riot to see Shelby turn around and look at Dana while his
paw is pushing the vase of flowers towards the edge.....

    Nancy,

You yell at Jack??? I don't believe it. He is sooooo sweet (and
you are soo nice). I loved Dundee and Mau. I am so glad that
Dundee did so well. I was very happy to meet you and Jack. It's
nice to put faces to names

re: .15 JACK IS A FIRST CLASS BRAT!

He's got you fooled too, eh?! Actually, he keeps me laughing
so I wouldn't have him any other way.
And I have a real streak of "fire" so you ought to see me
when I get "peeved" with Jack. Sometimes he brats out on
me just to get me cranked up. Then he tells me its in chapter
6 of "How to aggravate your Diettrich" which he claims he
inherited from my former boyfriend, John. (BTW - John picked
out Mao when he and I were together. When we broke up I got
    custody of the cats!)

Philip keeps pinching the squirt bottle to water the plants. Then
when the cats do something wrong, I reach out for the squirt bottle...
    and puff them with air.

    Really effective deterrent.
