2324.0. "Jimmy Smith Fund for Animals" by CRUISE::NDC () Fri Mar 24 1989 17:49

I just had a wonderful chat with a woman from the Jimmy Smith
fund for animals. When I told her about the FELINE notes file
she was thrilled. She said that it really made her day to know
there are so many folks out there dedicated to the welfare of
animals. I wanted to pass along her thanks and encouragement
    to all of you.

I got a list of about 6 other no-kill shelters in the Mass
area. I have to get addresses and phone numbers for these
places and will then collect some info on them.

I wanted to let you know that the Jimmy Smith Fund is pri-
marily concerned with catching and rehabilitating feral cats.
So any of you who find yourself dealing with a feral cat and
need some advice, these folks are an excellent resource.

I'm not sure of the name of the woman with whom I spoke
(think it was Marian) but if you do call, please tell them
you are one of the DIGITAL Feliners.

BTW - The Jimmy Smith Fund is named for a cat named Jimmy
who died at the age of seventeen from cancer. He was a long-
haired orange cat. He was one of Priscilla Connors most
beloved cats. Priscilla Connors is one of the four founding
members. (Rita & John Butler, Judy Zbar) They got started
leaving food and water for the poor homeless cats in their
    area.

I hope we can make them a recipient of our Silver Lining
    Memorial sometime soon.

The Jimmy Smith folks operate primarily in the
Somerville and Cambridge, Ma area, trapping and
caring for feral cats. I don't believe they
operate as a traditional shelter in that they
do not take in animals from random people who
call them. They do something quite unique I
    think.

Pretty much what you said. I think Donna clarifired a little bit
the fact that these people catch feral cats themselves, as opposed
to being a shelter that takes feral cats that other people catch.
