2314.0. "Who knows Himalayans???" by GALLOP::AMERR () Wed Mar 22 1989 09:46

Are there any owners of Himalayans/colourpoints who can give me
some idea as to the character of the breed? Or alternatively, are
there any people who have had experience of these delightful cats?

    Thanks

    	Russell,

I don't have a Himalayan but my fiance's brother does.
She's a white, chocolate point Himalayan. (brown on the
tips of her ears, nose, tail and paws) She has beautiful
blue eyes. She is truly a beautiful cat....or should I
say kitten.... she's about 9 months old. Her name is Chloe.

All I can tell you about her is she seems to be a fairly
calm cat but does have "the rips" every once in a while.
By "the rips" I mean just starts running all over the
place. And she has a motor that doesn't quit!! Loud too!\
Darryl was thinking of giving her up (why, I don't know)
but I told him if he did, I'd take her in a second.

I probably wasn't much help but....

    	Best of luck!

    	JJ

I have a beautiful sealpoint spayed female who is 6 years old.

They are wonderful cats. Ming is very affectionate, shy, and can
really play Thunder road when the spirit moves her. She is very
playful, loves to be groomed, and of course has the biggest bright
blue eyes. Most Himmies are stocky in build with short legs, and
carry their tail in the downward position, verses the ? type.

I just bought a book on Himalayians from an animal supply house
here in the United States. When I go home tonight I will get the
exact title, and authors and send the info to you. From what I
have read in the book the Himalayians are a very popular breed in
    the UK also.

The cattery where Ming came from the woman raised Seal Points, Blue
Points and Lilac Points. "If" I was to get another Himalayian I
would definately like one of her Lilac's.

Oh yes, I would liken their purr to a jet engine.

I could go on and on about my dear sweet Ming, but I know of several
other Himmie owners out there I would like you to hear from, come on
    Sherri, and Mary.

    Regards,
    Barbara
2314.3Persian's are great friends!MAMIE::TRAVISWed Mar 22 1989 17:1818
I've had a Blue point Himalayan for 13 years now. We had him
fixed and declawed when he was a baby. He is strictly an indoor
cat. I was afraid of someone of stealing him! He has big beautiful
blue eyes and purrs so loud!!! He is very affectionate and can
be playful when he's in the mood. I have to tell you that he has
a mind of his own. He does what he wants when he wants. He has
a certain chair in the living room that is "his" chair (according
to him) and if you sit on it, he circles you and meows until you
get off the chair!! He is truly a riot!! He is a very finicky
eater. He has a very sensitive stomach and can only eat certain
foods at certain times of the day. He's had this since we've had
him so its not an old age problem. He loves to be groomed. He
    is a very pleasant cat.

Hope this helps!! If I was to get another cat, I would definitly
    get a Himalayan!

I have two wonderful Himmies. They have wonderful, sweet personalities
and I love my two, and the breed in general, to pieces. There are some
who say they are, well, stupid, but I don't really agree. Alot of the
'cat instincts' like hunting prey have been lessened, but that doesn't
make them dumb. They are delightful house cats who live to be loved.
My two are bright and loving, and best of all, docile and calm.

Although they require grooming, my guys require a lot less grooming
than some Persian friends. Honey has never had a mat, and Chauncey
gets 'tufts' that easily comb out. Their fur seems more silky than the
    more 'cottony' Persian fur.

    And, oh, those blue eyes...

    Mary

    Hello Russell -

Here is the name of the book on Himalayians I spoke about in my note.

        ALL ABOUT HIMALAYIAN CATS

        author: Joan McDonald Brearley

publisher: THF Publications (located in New Jersey, USA)

In US dollars I payed $7.00 for the book and it is a good value.

Tells all about the breed, show pictures, both black and white and
color, grooming hints, breedings facts, first aid, and a lot of
other information you would not think to ask.

All the pictures they show, tells the name of the cat, owner, if it has
won show awards, cattery it came from etc. So many of the pictures
tell the cat was imported from England or the cattery the cat
represents is in England. From what I've seen you sure would have a
lot to choose from it you go "shopping" for a Himalayian. I would
suggest you do some reading on the breed and if that is what you want
go visiting some of the cattery's until you find the breeder who is
breeding the look you want. Some of the Himmies have the real break
in their nose, which gives them a turned up nose look, others have that
straight nose look. (My choice in looks is the later, but many like
    the other.)

Keep in touch, and let us know if you buy.

    Just a note:

I believe in the U.K., the Himalayan is referred to as the Colorpoint
    Longhair.

Barbara Ives Himmie, Ming, is gorgeous! I love her!!

My husband presented me with a black himalayan on x-mas eve '88.
He got him (Nicholas Peabody) from a breeder in Allenstown, NH and
drove the poor thing (then only 6 mos. old) home in a snow storm.
We had him nuetered and keep his claws trimmed but he is a bundle
of energy. He races from one end of the apartment to the other
and then climbs up our clothes to the rod of the closet. He
hides in the sheets in the linen closet (when the door is open) and
gets in the amwar (terrible speller). He loves dark hidden places
and at night sleeps in my arm pit.

He's super loveable and I'd have a whole house full if I could.
My husband was pushing it in getting me this one. Though he's not
a cat lover he is a pushover for Nickie. When my parents call the
first thing they say is hows Nick.

Great pets. Ours is strictly a house cat but I guess they all
must be since the breeder my husband got Nickie from said that
their survival instincts are bred out of them.

2314.10Could be a Solid or Pointed!IAMOK::GERRYHome is where the Cat isTue May 02 1989 20:5125
    Well, it depends...

In CFA Himalayans are a division of the persian class, so offspring
of a himalayan/persian breeding will be solid colored and shown
    or registered as persians.

In CFF, Himalayans are a separate breed, so, the solid colored
offspring that result from a himalayan/persian breeding are considered
    solid colored himalayans.

So, she could have a black persian/himalayan, or it could be a seal
point depending on if the color is on just the points or the whole
    cat.

    Does that make sense!!!

BTW, this is why Pointed Exotic Shorthairs are only registerable
in CFA and are not registerable or showable in CFF.

This is a quick explanation, but it's close to 5:00 and I want to
go home!!! I'll try for a clearer explanation tomorrow.

Hi, It's me from note .7.

I can't believe I caused all this curiosity. This weekend I will
pull out Nicholas' papers and see what they say. I should learn
more about the his breed I suppose, since I love him to death.

I know my husband got him from a breeder in Allenstown, NH and he
brought home a blue paper that, I guess is used to register him,
but I haven't done it yet. It had a line of boxes for his name etc.

I look it up this weekend and fill you all in. I wish I had the
woman's name I'd call her and ask her. He was out of a litter of
6 I believe and he was the last to go. (We got him at 6 mos).
She did mention his points were "sharp"?? enough to be a show cat.
I'm not sure. I don't want to be giving out wrong info.

I did hear somewhere that black himies were rare but in another note,
UMMM I think it's 2432, she has a black one too.

    I look into it!!

    Deb and Nicholas Peabody.

Please excuse me. It's Friday and I have a SPLITTING headache.

After I entered my note I realized I gave out false info.

The breeder said he DIDNOT have good enough points to show.
Let me check with hubby anyhow and I'll be back in touch on
    Monday.

2314.13Solid Black, or just on the points??IAMOK::GERRYHome is where the Cat isFri May 05 1989 17:1916
Does he have a solid black coat, or just black (dark brown) on the
"points" i.e. face, paws, tail with a tannish colored body.

A himalayan should have the color on the points only...like a siamese
colored cat with long hair and a flattish face.

How the cat is registered will depend on the association....if you
have a blue slip to fill out, then he is registered in CFA. In
CFA, the himalayan is a division of the persian breed, so really,
he is considered a "himalayan persian".

    Well, what color is he???

2314.14CPDW::BIRSEMon May 08 1989 12:3515
    Cin,

He is completely black. Paws, ears, face etc. No tannish color
at all. He does have a pug face though.

The papers are at my mothers in their safe, I might be going
    there this weekend.

Sounds like Nickie is a persian/himie. I have a picture if you
want me to send it to you. It's tough to see his face.

    Thanks for your interest.
