2299.0. "HOMES NEEDED - A.S.A.P." by USMRW2::MSIMMONS () Wed Mar 15 1989 12:16

    My mom is having new carpet installed in her home tomorrow and
    informed me last night that she was going to take her two cats
    to the vet and have them put down. I have been trying for several
    weeks to locate a home for them - but no luck.

    This is a last ditch effort to find a home for them. Both are
    neutered. One male, one female. The male would make a fantastic
    "mouser" on a farm. He is very large (nickname is Howard Huge).
     The female is a small tabby. She is almost 10 years old and has
    gotten to the point where she really doesn't go outside at all any
    more.

    If anyone out there in FELINE land is interested or knows someone
    who is interested, please send mail to USCTR2::MSIMMONS. I suppose
    the alternate plan would be the Goffstown Animal Rescue League.

2299.1None of my business, but...STAR::BARTHWed Mar 15 1989 15:126
    I'm curious...

    What does new carpet have to do with getting rid of cats? Do they pee
    all over it, scratch it, or is your mom just tired of vacuuming?

    If you can, take the male to a farm. If he's so happy that way...

2299.3If he's neutered I'll take him...FRAGLE::PELUSOWed Mar 15 1989 16:048
    Is the male neutered? If he is, I'll take him @ my barn.

    I am also wondering what a new carpet has to do with finding kitties
    new homes...
2299.4FSHQA1::RWAXMANA Cat Makes a Purrfect FriendWed Mar 15 1989 18:4813
    Yes, I, too, am wondering about the new carpet. If it is stains
    she is worried about, I don't even have stainmaster carpet and there
    is not a cat-related stain I haven't been able to remove with the right
    product. For example, when I called home yesterday from work, my
    fiance informed me that one of the cats had puked on the rug. I
    told him to get off his butt and clean it up. Well, Dana loves
    the cats but he considers all disgusting tasks my responsibility
    and so it sat until I got home. It cleaned up beautifully with
    a little elbow grease and No Stain Carpet Stain Remover.

    I was a little taken aback by this note. A new carpet seems like
    an awfully shallow reason to give up a beloved pet.

2299.6Why?UTROP2::RUSIUS_LThu Mar 16 1989 06:138
    If you decide to take cats, it seems to me that you love them,
    does she like a new carpet better than her pets???

    Can't she wait intil the old cat is gone, because at this age I
    think it's hard to find a new home for her.

    (I known it's none of my bussines, but I just can't understands
    these kind of things)
2299.7I can't believe this sort of thing...MPGS::MARGOLISPaula BethThu Mar 16 1989 10:229
    RE:  .6...

    I agree... Argh! It tears me up...the heartlessness in some people.

    My Mom never had/never will have pets because of "what it might
    do to her house".

    Ridiculous!

2299.8Just a Suggestion - Humane SheltersRETORT::BREDAThu Mar 16 1989 22:0113
    Where are you located? I have a list of humane shelters in the
    New England area. I think that would be much more kind than
    having them put to sleep.

    Also, please put a note in the classified ad notes file - I have
    had very good luck finding cats homes through classsifed.

    I'd love to help you out but I have three of my own and am nursing
    a fourth back to health before it goes onto its new home.

    Regards,

    Melissa,
      I sent mail to your account, but when I tried to call you, I was
    told that you'd left. I'm trying to track you down. Please call
    me at 297-2313. Provided your little tabby is FLV negative, we'll
    take her rather than see her put to sleep.
      Please call so we can talk about it.

    Mild flame warning:

    Putting cats down, or any pets, because someone doesn't want them
    is rather reprehensible, in my book, unless you have very good reason
    to put them down rather than at LEAST attempt to find a new home.

    I hate it when people treat pets as disposable assets.

    Please do give them to someone like nancy who is willing to try
    and re-place them.

    RE: -1 - That is the polite-est flame on I've ever heard.

    And I agree with you. I didn't say much because its not the
    author of the note who's doing this, its her mother. I just
    pray I can get in touch with her before its too late. Jack
    is in agreement with me that we can't allow this to happen.

    I know it's her mother too, and I certainly don't mean to cast
    aspirsions (is that how you spell it?) on her mom as a whole, I
    just take exception to the cat situation. I know of people who
    had cats put down (they WOULD NOT allow even the vet tech to take
    em home) because--get this--the cats didn't match the new decor
    after they remodeled the house.

    I have been unable to track down the author of the original
    note. Apparently, by the time I saw the note she had left
    her current position and had gone to another DEC facility.
    If anyone has any idea how I can contact her, Please let me
    know.  Thanks

    Nancy,

    Just a thought. . . the original author mentioned taking the cats
    to the Goffstown Animal Shelter. Maybe try giving them a call -
    you would be able to at least find out if the cats had been brought
    there yet.

2299.15She was able to hold Mom off, and they will be OK.NEBVAX::BELFORTIDISPATCHING: it's a living(barely)Mon Mar 27 1989 16:198
    To ease all your minds, I just spoke to Melissa this morning.
    She and her boyfirend and her roommate ate renting another place
    where they can have all the pets they want. Her boyfirend has 2
    Labs (??) and they will be taking 2 of the cats. Her sister already
    took one, and will be taking the older female too. That takes care
    of all the cats, and they never had to leave the people who loved
    them, just a little change in residency. Melissa is thrilled she
    can still have her babies.
2299.16huh, what did I say?????NEBVAX::BELFORTIDISPATCHING: it's a living(barely)Mon Mar 27 1989 16:234
    Damn, a bad case of fumble fingers today!
