2270.0. "My Asia needs help..." by BARTLE::CUTTING () Fri Mar 03 1989 16:42

Here's my Asia's story.....

First of all Asia lives with my parents as my husband is very allergic
to him. Asia is about 13 years old now and looks like he is slowly
wasting away. This past summer we found out he has a tumor (stomach/liver area).
The vet said because of his age he would problably not survive the operation.
At the time of this diagnosis, Asia was full of life and healthy looking so
my parents decided to let him live as long as he could. Over the past couple
of months he has lost alot of weight (I can feel his bones) although his
stomach is huge (I suspect the tumor is growing). Yesterday, I found
sores all over his stomach. I'm not sure if he was in a fight or what,
but this just made me so sad to see my kitty look so sick. The strange
thing is he still has his appetite and still purrs when he is petted.
Does anyone have any helpful information for my poor Asia? It would
be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for listening.

If he has sores all over his stomach, and you think his tumor is
growing, I think another trip to the vet is in line. You don't
want the sores to turn into abscesses.

I agree with .1. Your vet is the best source of help for this.
I hate to be the one to say it, but your vet is also a good
person to advise you when its time to say good-bye to Asia.
I wish there was more comfort I could offer. This is something
we'll all have to face sooner or later and I hope when I have to
make the decision I have the strength to do what's best for my little
    friend.
      Good luck .

I agree with Nancy - take him to the vet and see if there's anything
else that can be done for Asia. If not, and he's suffering, you may
have to make the decision to have him put down. Thirteen years is a
pretty good life for a cat, especially if he goes outdoors. I'm sure
	he's been a happy cat.

I'm also sorry that I can offer much more comfort either, but as cat
owners, we all have to deal with this sooner or later :^(

Essentially, part of my Jesse's problem was an obstruction between
the stomach and the intestines. He would have had to undergo surgery
to find out if it was a tumor or not, and given his age, we decided
to try and treat him without surgery. Jesse was alot older than
your cat, maybe a trip to the vet would help you decide if you might
want to try for surgery. As long as your kitty is otherwise healthy
and shows normal kidney and liver function, he should be okay for
surgery. Jesse's bloodwork indicated that his kidney and liver
function were not anywhere near normal, and he would not have survived
    surgery.

2270.6Kinda like AdaGENRAL::BALDRIDGEAll in a day's workFri Mar 17 1989 16:0810
The base note sounds a little like our Ada, however, she does not
have a tumor, but her kidney/liver function is gradually deteriorating.
She is just skin and bones and very frail, but otherwise in good
health. The vet has her on Science Diet K/D, canned and dry and
her overall appetite is fairly good, even though some days she just
doesn't feel like eating. She purrs when petted, sleeps on top
of my wife's head(see other note) and generally appears content.
I expect one day she'll just slip away.

re: .6 - I hope that when her time comes, she does, quietly, slip away
to that place where kitties play and never hurt. That has got to
be easier than having to decide when is the right time.
