2244.0. "Fleas - Help!" by LACV01::USHER () Mon Feb 20 1989 14:55

Living in Florida I have encountered an incredible flea problem.
I have fogged twice with VetKem products and bathed kitty and I
still have a problem. My question is has anyone used a professional
exterminater treating the rugs and is it safe for the cats.

Hi

One of the things I learned to help control fleas during the summer months,
was to vacuum at least twice a week - use a Dirt Devil on the furniture and
make sure to throw the vacuum bag out in the garbage immediately upon
completion!! I take the Dirt Devil out and brush it out good and spray
it with water and leave it out to air -- by doing this you are picking up
any eggs that may be around.. I also have a professional clean my carpets
in April and September.

If you have have fleas and you live in Florida call the
    exterminator QUICK.

They will be the only answer to getting rid of and keeping them
out of your home. When we lived there we had them come every
week and they sprayed the foundation, carpets, and furniture
to keep the fleas away from the animals and out of our home.

The year we lived there fleas were the worst that they had been
in 10 years. We had moved down from Ohio with 2 Saint Bernards
and Three cats, so you can see why it was so necessary we not
    have fleas.!!!!!

    "God bless those exterminators."

Have the exterminator spray outside your house too. This is what
really brought it under control for us. Here in California, fleas
are a year round problem since it never gets cold enough to kill
    them off.

I think a Dirt Devil is a little vacuum cleaner, a hand held one.
I think it is made by black and Decker.

Yep, you're right -- they work great on the furniture!!

Has anyone heard of Pestex? Its guaranteed for a year and what
they do is put a powder on your rug and the fleas start dying in
about 3 weeks. Its non-toxic but I don't know what it is. Anyone
    heard about it?

We have the house sprayed 3 times a year by the professionals and, if we
keep the yard sprayed, we can control the fleas. Mind, our cats are
indoors-only....if you let your cat out, it will bring in fleas and you
won't be able to control that. We remove the cats for 6 hours when
spraying indoors and the animals are not affected by the spray. Remember,
if it has to be safe for kids, it will be safe for cats after it dries.
