2233.0. "MY CAT IS TOO SLIM" by GVA02::CEHRS () Thu Feb 16 1989 10:55

My cat is fourteen and a half years old. She has been slowly
but surely losing weight over the past couple of years. She has
always been the slim/elegant type of a cat, but now she is really
VERY slim, i.e. most of her bones are showing, etc. I have taken
her to the vets both here in Switzerland and in the States
(Stow Animal Hospital) when we still lived there. I am getting
the same answer from vets on both sides of the Atlantic. The cat
is in good health and losing weight is normal in a cat getting
    older.
Have any of you experienced this with your cats ?
Can anyone tell me what to add to her normal diet which would put
    some weight on her ?
Please note, that as most cats, she is a finicky eater (no dry
food, will only eat certain types/brands of tinned food, will
not touch food to which any medication has been added, etc.),
but eats well when the food suits her. It is also quite impossible
to give any medication to her.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.
    Martha

I'm afraid that I can't offer any advice. However, friends of ours
have two 17 year old Siamese who are having the same problem. Their
vet says the same thing -- that it's perfectly normal in an aging cat.

My old lady is 16. She is also tottering on the too thin line.
To keep weight on her, I give her 2tbs. milk every day, a piece
of cheese every other day, and chicken livers once a week to
supplement her regular diet of canned food and free choice (as much
    as she wants) hard food.

These food are high in carbohydrates and calories which is great
for adding weight. But you do have to be careful of all the extra
protein. I know my vet would have a bird if he knew what I was
    feeding her!

Tiga is never constipated or otherwise and she loves these foods.

It is normal for an aging cat. Ours died 2 years ago at the ripe
old age of 16. She went from 14 pounds to 8 by the time she died.
She also became very finicky. I was told it was normal and has
to with the beginnings of liver and kidney failures normal with
the aging process. Just keep pampering and feed whatever you can
get him/her to eat. They do not need as many calories as they become
    far less active.
