2193.0. "Signs of Heat?" by CIMNET::PRIESTLEY () Wed Feb 01 1989 12:10

    How do you tell when a cat is in heat? Opus has been acting strange
    for the last week or so. She's been very affectionate and very weird!

    She's six months old, and in the last four months she has never
    made a sound unless she was really in pain (ie - she was stepped
    on or something like that) Now, she walks around the apartment almost
    howling--always meowing, and trying to get outdoors.

    She has always been afraid of going outside before, but now she
    climbs up on things to look out the window and meows. Or sits by
    the door and meows.

    It just isn't like her!

    Your cat is in heat - she needs to go to the Vet to be spayed or
    she will repeat these actions frequently!

2193.2Sounds like spay time to meWITNES::HANNULARound Up the Usual SuspectsWed Feb 01 1989 14:464
    My vet had told me that when a cat is in heat, if you grab her by
    the scruff of the neck, she will "get into mating position". The
    howling is a good sign, as well as rubbing up against your legs,
    and trying to get outside.
2193.3Spay while in heat?SALEM::DEFRANCO_JWed Feb 01 1989 14:546
    Can a cat be spayed while in heat? I always thought this could
    not be done due to the possibility of excess blood loss at this
    time.

    Yes, a cat can be spayed while in heat. In fact, a cat can even
    be spayed if pregnant. I believe it's a little more expensive,
    possibly because it's a little more dangerous?

    re: getting into mating position

    If she is really in heat she will squat on her hocks with her tail
    deviated to the side.

    Estrus does not involve shedding any tissue or blood. I believe
    that the female's uterus becomes swollen while in season, and most
    vets prefer to wait until the cat is out of season.

    She will probably be in season for at least seven days. You should
    plan to spay her after that because she can come back in after a
    couple of weeks. Each season gets more and more pronounced (if
    you know what I mean ;^}).

    Holly went into heat before her appointment to be spayed, and the
    vet said to wait until after she came out of heat. I _think_ he
    said something about the internal organs being swollen so the operation
    was more difficult when the cat is in heat. Since Sweetie has only
    had a vasectomy, they had a fine time waiting. Sure glad I'm not
    a female cat. Feline anatomy really is destiny.

2193.7JFCL howled continuously for four daysCADSYS::RICHARDSONThu Feb 02 1989 16:1013
    JFCL had her one and only heat a week or so before she was to be
    spayed, and it lasted for four days - I didn't sleep for four days! My
    normally quiet kitty howled almost continuously, day and night, and of
    course was not allowed to go outside - I even put her in the basement
    (Nebula, too; their litter box is down there) behind a closed door so I
    could try to get some sleep, but it didn't help much. Needless to say,
    I got Nebula spayed BEFORE her first heat - Neb is half-Siamese, and is
    a noisy critter anyhow, with a big Siamese voice.

    PS - Some people would like it if human female anatomy were still
    destiny, too! (But that's for another notes file.)

2193.8Sage has come of ageBIGSUR::GRAFTON_JIThu Feb 02 1989 18:239
    Well, this must be it for Sage. This morning my son started to
    pet her and then said, "Mom, how come Sage has her hind end up in
    the air?" Me: "mumble, mumble, don't know, mumble, mumble. Sage
    can't go outside today."  :-)

    And as I left the house, Sage was loving up the doorjamb...(from
    the inside)

    When my mom's cat, BeBee was in heat, my lettle brother, then in
    2nd grade asked why BeBee was acting so strange, and was constantly
    trying to rub against his leg. Mom gave the generic response "BeBee
    is in heat". Whereupon my brother asked "So, How Hot is she gonna get"

2193.10What do you call this step anyway?BIGSUR::GRAFTON_JIThu Feb 02 1989 21:217
    Reminds me of the time Sammie went into heat before she was spayed.
    She was pitiful--calling, meowing, backing up to everything and
    anything. What a sight she was! Well, the kids found that if you
    rub her at the base of the tail she would do this fancy little peddling
    step with her hind legs. Their response: "Mom, look! Sammie's
    dancing." Poor cat got more dances and less satisfaction than anyone
    I know.

    re: anatomy is destiny
      It wasn't so long ago (turn of the century) when it was common
    practice to remove the ovaries in women who refused to behave
    appropriately! It did cause personality changes of course.

    Re calling:

    My first Siamese, the grand old lady, Angelica, I acquired 1) as
    an adult, and [3 less 1]) unspayed. [sorry, the keyboard's flaky]
    As any Siamese owner knows, banshees can take wailing lessons from
    Siamese cats; this is doubled in calling. As Angelica was an indoor
    cat (and as the males in the house were exmales), she wasn't getting
    "satisfied." So, in the middle of one night, she discovered if she
    jumped into an empty bath tub, she could amplify her wails by a
    significant factor. It'd have pulled someone out of a deep coma.
