Conference misery::feline_v1

    I'm not sure if this is a related syndrome or not.  Schnapps, who is 
    two years old, has been sleeping in our bedroom for a long while.  
    She cuddles up under the covers between Steve and myself.
    One night last week, something strange must have happened.
    We believe it was one of two things, because she is normal except
    around the bed.  Either she did something to the electric blanket and
    got a big shock or we rolled over onto her.  Now if you put her on the 
    bed, she'll jump up frantically, walk pussy-foot (excuse the pun)
    across the bed and jump off.  If you hold her down, she'll look
    horribly frightened.  
    
    It is easing up with time, but she really got me good with her 
    back claws last weekend.  I am still experiencing some discomfort
    from the cuts.  
    
    Hope this helps somehow.  I think it just takes extra love, patience 
    and lots of time.  Kitties often go off in their own little world.

    Are you sure there isn't another cat outside the house?  Cats are
    much much better at knowing this than humans.
    

    No.  She has cats that come to visit her.  They will come up to
    the deck and look in the french door.  Muffin sees them and usually
    just trys to run at them.  She's never hissed or growled at them.
    
    My mother said Muffin would be walking along and suddenly turn as
    if she sees something behind her and starts hissing and growling
    and goes running to hide.  One time she went over to my parents
    bedroom closet, looked inside and started hissing and growling and
    went running out of the room.
    
    If no one else has encountered this before and the vet can't find
    anything wrong with her than what my parents think is happening
    could be true.
    
    Off and now for quite a while some strange things have been happening
    in my parents house.  Things like lights turning on and off by
    themselves.   A couple of weeks ago my mother was in the kitchen
    on the first floor and my father was in their bedroom which is also
    on the first floor.  My mother heard a man's voice and thought it
    was my father talking to himself.  My father then came out of the
    bedroom and asked my mother is my sister had left her TV or radio
    on.  My mother said no and said she thought that he was talking
    to himself in the bedroom.  He wasn't.  So, they checked out the
    house to see if anything had been left on.  Nothing had been left
    on.  My father never believed in things like this before, but after
    that experience he does now.  With what's been going on with Muffin
    my parents do believe she might somehow sense a presence.  My mother
    asked the vet and the vet said that she didn't think my mother was
    crazy and that cats do sense things that we cannot.
    
    We were just hoping that it might be a physical or mental condition
    that we hadn't heard of.

    There was another note just recently about cats doing this (I don't
    remember which one) but I did put it in there that DejaVu will stare
    at something that isn't there.  she will also follow with her eyes,
    either down the hallway or thru the family room, something that
    I can't see.
    
    I've read books that say cats are from another world.  Just maybe
    that isn't a fallacy???

         I have a 10 year old blue smoke persian (Sharmin) that will be 
    walking in the middle of the living room and all of a sudden stop and back
    up or duck under "something" that I can't see.  She has always done
    that, but it makes me wonder.
    
         Does Muffin do this only at night?  If so, is it possible she
    is having a nightmare and your parents have a sleep walking cat?
    I have to admit the happenings in their house makes the hair on
    the back of my neck stand on end, if there are no explanations for
    the events you wrote about.

    Sharmin will be getting a small furball for a roomate for the first
    time in her life as soon as I can find someone with kittens.  Maybe
    I should wonder if the new kitten behaves the same?...

      Sounds like my sister and her cat.  SHe and her husband just 
    recently bought and old run down house that they are fixing up.
    Starting around the holidays, some very strange things began
    occurring there that an explanation for might be hard to come by
    unless one believes in the supernatural.
      The first incident occurred a few days before x-mas, when my
    sister decided to sleep in, as she didn't have to work that day.
    She nestled under the blankets after her hubby left for work. Smokey
    her cat, was curled peacefully by her head. Suddenly he jumped up
    on the bed, every hair on his body stood out from him. He began
    trembling, and hissing, and woke my sister. She asked him what was
    wrong, but he just stood there with these enormous eyes. The door
    to the bedroom was slightly ajar, he was moving his head as if 
    waiting for something to appear by the crack in the door. 
    Then my sister could very clearly hear the door to the spare bedroom
    open and steps come across the floor, through the kitchen and stop
    near the bedroom door. Smokey dived under the blankets, my sister's
    heart was pounding with fear. Then the steps turned away, there
    were assorted noises, and then retreating steps, the closing of
    the spare bedroom door, and one very scared cat! She said it took
    him a few minutes before he came out of the blankets and then he
    began smelling all over, went out into the other room. The rabbits
    had somehow gotten out of their cages, which is interesting,
    considering how the locks are, and he just kept smelling and smelling
    and walking all over where the sounds had come from.
       Similar incidents have resulted in similar behavior. Sometimes
    she comes home and lights and things will be on and the cat will
    be under the bed, with those enormous eyes. 
       Pretty weird....hope no one was reading this before bedtime.......

    The ghost explanation is the first thing I thought of too.
    Another possiblity I could think of is a brain tumor (but
    the vet checked this out) that would cause hallucinations,
    "sleep walking", nightmares etc.  I'd like to believe in
    the ghost theory myself.  Let me know what happens.

    Muffin has only done it a couple of times during the day.  My
    mother said it mostly happens after 8pm at night.  Since
    she's got her home from the vets they've kept Muffin closed in their
    room all night.  She's fine until you let her out.  She started
    hissing and growling when she went into the hall and then another
    time she hissed and growled in the kitchen.

    After reading this, I thought about how Schnitzel has been acting
    lately.  We'll be watching TV and she'll suddenly dart into the
    kitchen and dining room then back to the living room.  She'll then
    walk around cautiously until she's satisfied (with what, I'm not
    sure).  At night she'll be on the foot of my bed, ears will all
    of a sudden perk up, she'll tense, look around (sometimes she'll
    go investigate) then come up to the head of my bed and settle in.
    My mother passed away three weeks ago....wonder if she's "visiting"?
    She and Schnitzel got along quite well.  Guess next time it happens,
    I'll ask.....

ALL cats are psychic.....they are much closer to the silent, unseen world
than any of us.  If the cat is healthy, I wouldn't worry....it's probably
just a poltergeist (and a reasonably benign one, at that -- they can be
very naughty).

    After reading this note I started wondering about Elmo, who has
    been climbing onto the ledge over the stairs, and crying towards
    the ceiling, like he wanted to kill something.  It finally dawned
    on me this morning - there's a couple of dangling spider webs there
    that I can't reach when I clean.

    It's a boogens.
    
    All cats know when the boogens are near them. It's genetic, coming
    from a mutation of the boogens-b protein.
    
    All this worrying over the whole deal is absurd.

    For those interested in the psychic aspect of this, you might try
    the DEJAVU conference (BOMBE::DEJAVU or "SEL" or KP7 to add to your
    notebook).
    
    Cats are psychic, and I have reported a case in DEJAVU where a cat I knew
    saw something that, from the reports of the story, I'm convinced
    was paranormal. It's one of the older notes.

    I agree with .9 hope my kids never act like that, the only one that
    growls and hisses is Cinnabar when she hears my husband come home
    late and I in bed.  Once she realizes it's him she quiets down.
    I don't care to have spooks in the house thank you.
