2121.0. "Special Kitty's Sad Ending" by ISWS::BARLOW () Fri Jan 06 1989 19:07

Hi! Here is a sad story, so if youre quezzy, you don't have to
    read it.

This morning, my daughter went to the store to buy kitty litter
for her familys pet kitten. About 2-3months old. She put the
kitty out because she was afraid she might soil the rugs until
she got back with the kitty litter. She had her two children
Kristy and Brendan, ages 3 and 1 1/2 in the car. The kitten
ran out to greet them upon their homecoming and she ran over and
    killed the kitten.

She is devastated. The little girl is fine. The baby too young
to absord it all. Her name is Cheri. Cheri is feeling quilty,
because she usually doesn't put the kitty out in cold weather.

She is so upset, we all felt that kitty was very special. She
was the highlight of our Christmas visit with the family. She played
with the dog in such a loving way. She was special to all of us!

My question is, Should she wait to replace kitty? I told her to
sleep on it and she'd know and do the right thing.

    What do others think?

    Sincerely,

    The grandmother

    ouch

For what it's worth, I know how she feels. I accidently killed
my dog of 18 years when I was 20. (oh so long ago!)

2121.2replace kitten within a few daysERLANG::LEVESQUETorpedo the dam; Full speed astern!Mon Jan 09 1989 11:438
It may be a good idea to replace the kitten fairly soon. The little
girl will probably benefit from having a new kitten to help her
move on. Teaching children to deal with death is difficult. It is
often helpful when they are young to give them something to replace
the lost animal. I think it helps them to learn that life goes on.
    That's what I'd do, anyway.

Get another kitten right away. I am so sorry to hear about what
happened. In the future, don't empty the box until you have more
litter. In an emergency put shredded newspaper in the box for the
short amount of time til you get more litter. or just get some
    dirt from the back yard.

I also felt responsible for the death of my first cat. Getting
another kitten won't exactly replace the one you lost, but it helps
    fill the empty hole.
And don't let this one out.

    just a quick word...

when out of kitty-litter for small periods of time simply leave
the empty kitty litter tray available with a layer of newspaper,
paper bag, saw dust or even some potting soil... they all work
    in an emergency!

For what it's worth, I also did this to my kitty. I slammed his
neck in the car door and ruptured his diaphram. I didn't know for
two years, but he died after the operation. I know exactly how
she feels. My mother also ran over our dog. It happens all of
the time and it just can't be avoided. Unfortunately, they do not
have the brain power to relize alot of hidden dangers. They just
assume we know everything and are perfect.

I can't tell you whether it is best to waite or not, I always did.
Small children however might bounce back faster with a new one to
    love.

Thanks everyone for the comfort! Cheris daughter Kristi just came
down with asthma. She may not be able to get another kitty.
    Thanks for all the concerns.
