2110.0. "List of Local Animal Shelters" by MPGS::MARGOLIS (Paula Beth) Tue Jan 03 1989 12:58

I have been having a frantic time trying to collect the names/numbers
of all the Massachusetts humane societies and animal shelters. I am
looking for a dog, but feel people wanting cats may be having the same
    problem.

If such a note doesn't already exist, I would like to dedicate a note
to the Names/Addresses/Phone Numbers of local animal shelters. Please
also provide any input you may have about their reputation. I know
there is scattered information throughout this file, but what is needed
    is a quick reference.

    Thanks! Paula

2110.2Animal Adoption Agency ListingMPGS::MARGOLISPaula BethTue Jan 03 1989 14:298
RE: .1 I disagree. I just looked in 666 and it might be a
catch all for pet products, and the like, but only one Humane Society
was listed. Since we do a lot of "matchmaking" in this file, I feel
it only proper that we dedicate a note to "animal adoption agencies".
If we did this, and word of it was put as a reply to Note 1, maybe
more people would refer to it than just avid "FELINErs".

    Please?

2110.8(Breed) Rescue Leagues, etc.CURIE::SADLER_TEMPThu Jan 05 1989 14:4016
Depending on the breed you are searching for, there may be a specific
rescue league devoted to that breed here in Massachusetts. Some
of the larger shelters may be able to direct you to one. Some breed
rescue leagues I have heard of are the Golden Retriever, Greyhound,
Boxer. I am sure there are tons more.

Another source of finding a purebred cheap is to contact a breeder
of the specific breed. Sometimes they keep a pup just to grow it
out, then discover that it is not quite show quality. Many times
the breeder will give the dog away (with Reg. Papers and agreement
to have the dog spayed/neutered). This also helps to promote better
    standards within the breed.

Let me know what breed you are looking for -- maybe I can help.

The shelter is set up on the Dog Officer's land and they work

For anyone in the Oklahoma area accessing this file, there is a
non-profit tax-free animal sanctuary (started in 1984) called "Free To
Live", Western Ave., Edmond, Oklahoma, (405)282-8617. Animals there
who are not placed in homes, find a permanent home with "Free To Live".
Auctions, garage and yard sales, as well as personal donations help
support the sanctuary. The WAL-MART Store, and employees of Ralston
Purina and Carnation donate dog/cat food as well as bags of kitty
litter that are broken and cannot be sold.

After searching for a home for a cat (note 2787), I thought I would throw
in a note with all of the information I found on placing cats over the last
few weeks.

BEST SOURCE: This notesfile - my cat was placed when someone
extracted my note and mailed it to someone who never read the
	file.

	NO-KILL SHELTERS:

		BUDDY DOGS 617-237-4747
status: Will not take any cat over four years old
currently has a long waiting list

		VOLUNTEER HUMANE SOCIETY 508-365-9470
status: Full - no waiting list as they are too
			 overcrowded.

		HOPKINGTON 508-435-6938
status: No openings until the fall

		N.E. ANIMAL SHELTER (SALEM) 508-745-9888
status: Full - out 3 or 4 months

		PURR-FECT CATTEL (c/o Pat Brody) 508-342-2143 (home)
		status: Full

		KITTY ANGELS 508-649-4681
status: Full - out to end of October

		JUST-CATS INC 508-285-3404
status: Full - will put you on waiting list

	NASHUA HUMANE SOCIETY 603-883-8512
status: Although they do not claim 'no-kill,' the woman
I spoke to (Becky) assured me that if the cat was healthy
and not vicious, they would keep it indefinitely until
a home was found. They place the cat in quarantine for
a few weeks, check for leukemia, have you fill out an
extensive questionnaire on the likes/dislikes of the cat
		and then work on adoption.

Hope that helps someone!
