2085.0. "Cat Lick?" by JGO::SHERLOCK (Quid non Deo Juvante) Thu Dec 22 1988 13:13

We've had our pussy-cat for about four weeks now. We adopted
her from the stray-home. She's seems to us and the vet to be a
very healthy cat..we had her examined. She's about nine months
old now. She settled down really well adapting to her new home
very quickly. One thing I'm curious about, whenever she's washing
herself, or if she is just resting and I stroke her she starts
licking me !. I've never come across a cat that licked so much.
I know in the case of dogs that this can mean a shortage
of salt in their diets, does the same apply to cats as well !
Is there anyone out there who can tell me why she does
this ? It's not that I find it irritating or anything like
that...far from it, it's as though she wants to give me a kiss !

My cat's been doing this for years, and since he's never been sick
or displayed and emotional or physical problems, I take it as just
plain effection! (Although it gets a little aggravating when he
licks my face in the middle of the night!!)

It's definately a sign of affection and love. Female cats especially
seem likely to do it. I guess it's more instinctive in them, where
they have babies to keep clean, etc. All my females do that, but
the males don't. Even the girls who haven't had kittens do it.
Part of the old mother instinct, just like a women might be apt
to brush a child's hair out of their eyes, or tuck in a little one's
shirt, sometimes women do these affectionate moves when interacting
with children almost by instinct. Same principle I guess.
      Take it as a kiss.....

    Hello Barbara, and Denise,
Well thank you very much for your replies,
I know for definite now that there is nothing wrong with pussy's
diet. and that she was just showing affection. I wish you all a
    Merry Christmas...

    Cheers

Three of my four give me "kitty kisses" as I call it. IT makes
sense to me...they groom each other, why not the biggest cats (us).
The only trouble is when Mao grooms my eyelid when I'm in bed.
    OOOOOOH can that hurt!

Only one of our cats licks us, a neutered 2-year old male who has
done it ever since we got him as a tiny kitten. His preference is
my oldest son who has the hairiest arms in the house. Our female
likes me to rub the side of her face with mine but has never tried
    to groom anyone.
