2077.0. "Is your cat a klutz...like mine?" by PAR5::K_CIOFFI () Tue Dec 20 1988 12:41

Well, I always heard that cats were graceful, balanced, coordinated,
etc. Then there's Jasper!!! We have nicknamed him "klutz". We
have piles of boxes in our house (because we're moving) and our
little guy thinks they're there for him to play on. Yesterday he
climbed up a couple of boxes, and proceeded to jump at the wall.
We don't understand this thought process. But all he managed to
do was fall straight down hitting his front leg and stomach on the
side of the furniture. We thought he was really injured, but just
knock the wind out of himself. After 5 minutes, and me reaching
for the phone to call the vets, he started running all over the
place playing. Seems that all that was really injured was his pride.
So in an effort to recapture his manliness, he started doing macho
kitty things and fell off the end of the couch. Later in the day
he got shut in my closet. This morning he jumped up on my bureau and
wiped out. When we put his harness on, he thinks he's paralyzed
and doesn't walk. He tries, but keeps falling.

Does anyone else own a klutz, or was Jasper in the wrong line when
    they handed out kitty qualities?

p.s. He got an extra dose of good looks though, and we love him lots!!

Hey!!! Maybe it has to do with good looking cats!?!?!

Bob is *gorgeous* - all black and white and long hair and perfect
everything. Except - he has less coordination than an adolescent
boy. We laugh at him all the time. You know how most cats can
walk along very narrow fences and the like? Well, not Bob. He
was walking along the kitchen counter and when he came to the sink
and had to walk on the narrow area between the sink and the edge,
he couldn't do it - fell right off and landed on top of the dog
who just looked up with disgust and decided to chase Bob away.

Bob also likes to sleep up on the back of the sofa (a habit I am
trying to break with the new sofa just delivered - but that's another
story) Anyway, he *always* manages to roll over in his sleep and,
kerplunk - one cat in your lap. Lucky it is against the wall!!!

The other funny thing about him is the way he jumps down from being
held. My other cat is very graceful (as is Bandit, the visiting
cat) but Bob looks like he isn't sure how to put it all together.
Legs go every which way and he often lands on his tummy. We have
taken to putting him down on the floor for fear he will injure himself.

Glad to hear there are other klutzy cats - --

2077.2I meant to do that.....CRUISE::NDCTue Dec 20 1988 14:116
My cats aren't quite as klutzy as the previously mentioned kitties,
but they do occasionally miss a jump or fall of something at which
time they always look at me and say "I meant to do that!".
I just say "Oh yes, of course." Wouldn't do to offend their pride.

My Sheba and Sity are very sensitive about being klutzy. With their
advancing years, they miss the jumps a little more often ...and
if you offer them sympathy or laugh at them they become totally
annoyed with the whole world for a while. I've learned to "not notice"
and they seem to appreciate it.

Brings to mind something I noticed when I used to work at the vet's
every day. I wonder if others have noticed the same thing. When
dogs were recovering from surgery or illness they would respond
well to a little sympathy. ...In fact, they thrived on it. Cats,
however, seemed to appear to "give in" to the illness a little more
when offered sympathy. A little praise and admiration would often
have them perking up, washing themselves and looking happier..

....and then there was the time that Sity ran the length of the
sofa on to the top of the long aquarium ..intending to run up the
stairs beyond. ..Only this time the tank top was open. Sity hit
the bottom and was out again in one jump. My son Mike, resting on
the sofa, was soaked, but Sity had moved so fast she was almost
completely dry! For months after that she would come to a screeching
halt next to the tank, touch it gingerly to assure it was closed,
and then resume her helter-skelter race up the stairs.

2077.4a klutz for affection!NEXUS::HOUGHTue Dec 20 1988 17:0216

my boy jack is pretty klutzy, but only when he's affectionate!
you see, he rolls over on his back to have his belly rubbed and
gets so comfy and really into it...then he gets closer to the edge
ofthe couch and whammo! he rolls off.....without even realizing
it was going to happen!!! then he looks up at me like...why did
you do that??? i think he's just too pre-occupied with the
intense feeling of the belly rub that he's just not paying
attention.......but it is funny to see!!!

my little munchkin likes to sit on the couch and chase
her tail...around and around and around and...kerplunk!
right on the floor. Then she looks at me like "Mom, what
happened? you were supposed to CATCH me!" or she'll be
chasing our 4 year old kitty until crash...right into the
food bowl proceeding to spill it all over the kitchen floor.
    	"where did THAT come from?"

what a cutie....now if I can only keep her away from the
    	Christmas tree....

My Tsunami was very klutzy when I got her, but she was still on her
little kitten legs. Now that she's a "mature" 9 months, I hardly ever
catch her making a mistake.
Her favorite feat is to run all the way from the living room into the
bathroom. From there it's kind of fuzzy because she goes from the floor to
the toilet to the towel bar to the top of the shower door before I know it.
When she reaches the top of the shower door, she is always perfectly
balanced.
When I do catch her being klutzy, though, I too get to see that
"I meant to do that" look.
