2026.0. "Cheaper Kitty-Litter!!!!" by SOFBAS::MCDONOUGH () Fri Dec 02 1988 19:19

This may be "old news", but I'll put it in anyhow and if the
    moderator decides it's redundant...delete it!!

      For those of you who:

     (a)Have a "group" of cats...(I'd consider 3 or more a "group..)

     (b)Use "clay" type Kitty Litter...

(c)Are tired of paying $2.00 to $3.50 for an 8 lb. bag of it...

I've found a real cheap acceptable alternate....

Go to an Auto Parts store and ask for a 50lb bag of "SPEEDY DRY"
This stuff is used in garages to pour on oil, gas, antifreeze,
spills... It's EXACTLY the same as the un-scented Kitty Litter that
comes in the red bag...ground up small pieces of clay.

If you have a problem with odor, a few teaspoons of baking soda
sprinkled on top works fine as a deodorant...

A 50 pound bag of this material costs me $10.09 including tax....

(it also comes in other brand names..."Kwik-Dry", "Eze-Dri",
"Drys-it" are a few....all the same material though...If in doubt,
ask if it's the dry clay material...

    1. This stuff might contain just ground up clay, but has it been
"sterilized" so as not to have any disease in it?

    2. I pay $2.99 for a $25 LB bag of Cat's Pride Unscented or unscented
in the supermarket. 50 LB comes to $5.98, about 60% of what you are
       paying

2026.2Where's your supermarket?? I paid 2.99/8 lb!!SOFBAS::MCDONOUGHFri Dec 02 1988 20:126
     Hmm... I'll check that out...

The Speedy Dry IS sterilized...in fact, it says on the bag
    "Also an excellent Cat litter"

I've beeing picking up the CATS PRIDE at the Waltham Supermarket
on Rt. 20 in Waltham, MA. For the past 2 months, the 25 lb bags have
been coming with $.50 off coupons on the 25 lb bags, which the
supermarket doubles, so effectivly I pay $1.99.

Is the $1.99 the regular price, or is it on sale? It might be worth my
while to truck up to DeMoulas armed with a few coupons.

All I ever pay is $1.99 for a 25 lb bag. Anything over $4.00 for
a 50 lb bag is a rip off.

Erikson's Grain Mill in Acton (rte. 27) sells ZIP-ZORB in 40 or 50 lb bags
for about $4 or thereabouts. They are a good source for reasonably priced
canned and dry cat foods as well. They tend to sell in case lots and they
will sell mixed types in a single case -- they understand about fussy
eaters who want variety.
2026.8I get it cheaper than any of you :-)TALLIS::ROBBINSTue Dec 06 1988 13:079
I've used oil absorber for cat litter for about 12 years now because
it's so cheap --$00.00 for a fifty pound bag.

Of course Dad does sell auto parts for a living... :-) :-)

On the serious side, though, I don't know if it's sterilized
or whatever, but our cats have never had any health problems with
it, and ,in fact, I think they prefer it to the overly-perfumed
stuff sold in grocery stores.
2026.9Where does Dad work????CUPMK::TRACHMANZhivagoCats, Ltd..The Inn is Full..264-8298Tue Dec 06 1988 15:0510
I have used the zip zorb from Erikson's when I worked at the Mill.
The stuff was very reasonable, but I now live too far to get there.
The only negative was the dust - but, from what I've seen lately
every type within reason ($$) is dusty.

re: .9

Sorry, Dad's in Florida (where his store is), as are my kitties.
I'm up here in Massachusetts
married to a man who's wonderful in all ways except that he's ALLERGIC
TO CATS! Can you believe it? If he'd told me that before asking me out
the first time, I would have known to turn him down... :-)

So my kitties live with Mom and Dad in Florida, and I had to settle
for dogs, who are wonderful, but not a replacement for my cats.

Oh! Funny you should say that - now, the first thing I ask a
guy, is "Are you allergic to cats?" and the next thing is,
"Do you like cats?" Allergies are a tough problem.

We get Tidy Cat III for $1.99 for 25lbs as long as I buy it in bulk.
It comes packaged two to a blister pak and I buy 25 of those at
a time (lasts forever). It is also 99% dust free.

    Re: Zip-Zorb
You can also get this, most times, at UCF Flame (United Cooperative
Farmers-Farmers Live Animal Exchange) in Littleton, MA. It's on
Rt. 119 (west of Rt. 495). By the way....just for info., I'm not
sure they really have the 'live animal exchange' someone just told
me that that's what the name stands for. Also, they usually have
kitties there from a local non-euthanasia humane society!
