1946.0. "Dinner: The return engagement" by SWAT::COCHRANE (Scattering like light.) Wed Nov 09 1988 01:37

I need some advice, as I'm a little concerned about my kids, and I
can't tell who the culprit is. On Wednesday of last week, I picked up
some Science Diet Feline Maintenance at the pet shop. I wanted to
switch them over to Science Diet before I gave them the light formula.
They were also out of Iams. Well, Niniane and Charm thought the stuff
was the greatest thing since sliced bread when I gave it to them.
They gobbled it right up. Thursday, Friday, no problems. I came home
Saturday evening (none too early either) to find a present in the
basement - someone had tossed their cookies (on the carpet no less).
They have, in the past, thrown up occasionally, and I put it down to a
hurried dinner and a sensitive Siamese tummy, held my breath and
cleaned up the mes Sunday, Monday, no problem. This evening, another er
gift. I still have no idea which one is upchucking. I'd put it down
to hairballs, but there's not a hairball in sight (sorry, don't mean
to be gross). I am now a little concerned. In the near year I've
have them, they only thrown up once or twice. It is generally not a
common occurance for them. They seem healthy as horses, playful,
inquisitive, cold of nose and bright of eye. No change in behavior.
So, should I:

1.) Go back to Iams, and live with hefty kitties? They never had
    a problem with Iams.

2.) Keep the Science Diet and hope they adjust?

3.) Pack them both off to the vet's?

Why do they throw up only occasionally? If the food bothers them that
much, shouldn't they toss every time they eat it? They keep eating
it, the bowl is empty every day when I get home. Anyone have any
sure-fire ways of determining which cat in a multi-cat house is
upchucking?

Thanks, I'm just being my usual, over-protective self.

1946.1make diet changes graduallyVAXWRK::SKALTSISDebWed Nov 09 1988 13:197
I think the problem might be the abrupt change over to Science Diet,
as I've experienced the same problem with the twins. I've found if I'm
going to change their food, I've got to do it gradually, mixing some of
the old with some of the new until finally they are weaned off the old
    stuff.

1946.2If not food, then Laxatone...MPGS::MARGOLISPaula BethWed Nov 09 1988 13:2511
I had similar problems with Tequila, although there was no change in
diet. All of a sudden it just started. And kitties make incredible
noises when they...Anyway, it may or may not be the food. I solved
the problem with Laxatone...every other day for a while, then once
a week. It was hairballs in Tequila's case.

My advice would be to go back the the IAMs. Then if the problem
    continues, try the Laxatone.

    Good luck!

1946.3Yum, Mom, Laxatone!!!!SWAT::COCHRANEScattering like light.Wed Nov 09 1988 14:4112
Yea, I decided to be on the safe side after cleaning up the mess
in the basement (and laundering the blanket, etc.) and greased 'em
up with Laxatone. Usually it stops the problem. Perhaps I changed
the food too fast, they seemed rather grateful for it, though.
I was getting some very tired looks every time I appeared with the
same old orange bag. My only concern is that cax max
will double this week-end, and I would prefer not to be cleaning
up multiples. Litterboxes I can handle, this makes me gag. And
while I'm sure they'd feel better for the extra sympathy, I've no
desire to be upchucking in the basement along with my brood!!

1946.4The light has lots more fiber - their system needs time to adjustCUPMK::TRACHMANZhivagoCats, Ltd..The Inn is Full..264-8298Wed Nov 09 1988 15:188
The problem is the Science Diet - it's loaded with FAT - it may
be a different type of fat than the IAMS. I would go with the
Light . Actually, they have had 3 different types of food in
a short time. They may need an adjustment period. It could
also be the changes in the weather - just upset tummies.

One of my cats has a sensitive tummy. Even 50/50 mixing didn't
help much. She gagged sporadically for 10 days. Now she's fine.

(Helpful hint: when cleaning IT, cut a paper plate in equal halves.
Then scoop IT using both halves at once. This quickly removes
most of IT, leaving just the scrubbing to fully clean the spot.)

I guess the only way to determine the cat with the weak tummy is
to isolate them for a while...

If you use about a thousand paper towels at once you can avoid seeing
    most of it.

Grab some tissues from the bathroom, close your eyes, and if
it's long and hairy, roll it onto the tissue and run like
crazy to the toilet, toss & flush (eyes still closed, of course).
Then, vacuum up the lint from the tissues (or paper towels or napkins).

When I switch Bailey and Amelia from Science Diet Feline Maintenance
to Science Diet Reduction Diet (R/D) I came home one night in the
first few days of the change to find one corner of my new living
room rug totally covered with spots where someone had "tossed their
cookies". It hasn't happened again since that first time. I suspect
it was Bailey (known for the most sensitive tummy) although I never
did find out who it was.

When they first started eating the R/D you'd have thought I was
starving them for days. They practically inhaled the stuff. I believe
it was a case of overeating that caused the problem along with the
    change in food.

Short of isolating everyone and testing them with the Science Diet
I don't know how to figure out who is the culprit unless they do
it again while you're there. With Bailey's bouts of tummy problems I
usually end up at the vet's with a cat who really isn't seriously
sick but who has her own version of kitty flu or is bulemic. So,
if a trip to the vet would ease your mind I'd say go for it.

As for the clean up...I use a method similar to .7. Scoop it up
in tissue/paper towels, hold at arms length and make a beeline for
    the toilet.

I just love it when this happens :-)

All right you guys, it's your fault. Trouble had been doing real
good lately regarding hairballs and other yuck thanks to the Linatone,
but last night (when I was expecting company for dinner, of course)
when I got home, she had done IT. The only consolation is IT was
on the linoleum kitchen floor, which makes it *much* easier to clean
up. Sigh, the things we put up with from our kids.

Yeah , sure! Your luck IT was on the kitchen floor. I came home
last night opened the door from the garage to the cattery, stepped
onto the black rubber nubby door mat and - squish - I mashed IT
right into the nubbs of the mat. Try cleaning that up! sigh
My kids must have been listening to the conversation in this
note or else they have been talking to all of your kids on the
phone finding out the best places to leave their YUK. I have
decided to install a coin-operated telephone! That will fix 'em!

Gee, I feel real bad now. Mine have been fine ever since I posted
this note....Guess I better check my phone bill this month and see
if they've been calling E.T.'s kids while I'm out!!!! ;-)

1946.12EVEN MORE YUCK...UTROP1::LOTTUM_TMon Nov 14 1988 15:2317
    Hi kitties, girls and guys,

I'm sitting here reading this about IT and thank god the office
is empty (it is after working hours here in Europe) because it's
cracking me up. All the different desriptions of cleaning IT. Let
me tell you one thing. I had to clean up dog-yuck very often. And
this dog was big and ate a lot! I had trouble with my own stomach
the first couple of times but during the years I got so used to
it that I would leave the dinner table after the act, clean it up
and finish my dinner! Remembering it now it grosses me out but you
    get used to it (IT).
I guess I won't have too much trouble cleaning up kitty-yuck when
    I get my kitties.

    Bye for now.
