1912.0. "WHEN IS CHECKUP TIME?" by MILVAX::AQUILIA () Tue Oct 25 1988 12:28

    i was wondering when the average time is for vet checkups.
    verne and shirl haven't seen the doctor since may and even
    though i remember him telling me a year (am i loosing it?)
    i thought it should be six months,

    what does everyone else think? also, what kind of shots do
    they need? they are very healthy (verne is fat) and i would
    like them to stay that way (healthy that is)

    any help is appreciated,
    thanks

1912.1After the 1st round, once a year.CUPMK::TRACHMANE.T.'s ZhivagoCats....DTN: 264-8298Tue Oct 25 1988 12:4117
    Generally, after their series of kitten shots, once a year
    for the yearly exam and booster shots of whatever you feel
    necessary for your cat - usually the 3-way booster (that's
    what they get as kittens) rabbies, etc.

    I bring the show babies in twice a year for exams only -
    many opinions say shots only once a year - I used to think
    that the show kids needed them twice, but Dr. Brody says
    no.

    The kitten series "generally" runs like: 8 wks - 1st shot
    then another in a month I believe, and then sometimes a 3rd
    depending on your vet. If you bring them in for their first
    shot at 10 or 12 weeks, which I think is a little late, then
    the vet may only do a series of 2.

1912.2I agree. Once a yearSALEM::NOYCEYellowstone-Yea! Park Service-Nay!Wed Oct 26 1988 11:127
        We took our new kitten in yesterday for his first ever checkup.
    Shots, stool sample, blood, the works and all for the low low
    price of $56. In a couple of months she goes back for more shots.
    Then It's once a year whether you can afford it or not. Our Vet
    must be putting a kid thru college!!

1912.3upper respiratory shots...MILVAX::AQUILIAThu Oct 27 1988 13:4610
    guess what once a yearers..... my vet phoned me! yes, indeed he
    called last night (i always knew i was physic (SP?) anyways.....
    he asked if i could bring in the babies for a winter upper respiratory
    shot. so, i guess i'm off to the vet. has anyone heard of that
    before.

    oh, and thanks for the quick responses....

    Hi Carla Jean!!!

    I *never* heard of a winter upper respiratory shot! How old are
    these cats? Are the finishing up their kitten series? It could
    be that one vaccine was omitted because a rabies or FeLv shot was
    given. Very rarely will a vet vaccinate a cat with the annual
    boosters, rabies and Leukemia at the same time.

    Carla Jean,

    What had your vet said about the winter upper respiratory shot?
     Do you know his reasoning behind it?

    My kitties all developed the sneezies this weekend. I'll be stopping
    at my vets tonighte for medicine for them. . . maybe I'll ask if
    I should bring them in for shots.

    Thanks\

    my kitties are a year and a half, and the doctor says its their
    flu shots. in fact, yesterday verne started vomitting. when i
    told my mother she informed that he wasn't his normal cheerful
    self. his nose was warm too.

    i was thinking of taking them today....

    I give my cats there yearly shots all at the same time too. Easier
    for me to remember when they are due, less stress for them to get
    it over with at one time.

1912.10no one has had flu shots?MILVAX::AQUILIAWed Nov 09 1988 11:308
    i haven't taken them yet because i'm concerned about whether or
    not its a good idea. verne had a cold, i'm sure of that. but
    come to think of it, he was very sluggish this morning (but that
    is probably because he got outside yesterday and was still in shock)
    but really, i'm confused. if i don't go away this weekend (and it
    looks like i won't) i think i'm gonna take them over, i just know
    what an experience it will be.........................

1912.11Before you run off to get "flu shots",CUPMK::TRACHMANZhivagoCats, Ltd..The Inn is Full..264-8298Wed Nov 09 1988 15:3626
    I have never heard of flu shots in 30 years of owning cats, but......
    there is always a first time. A good thing to keep in mind, is

    NOT to vaccinate when the animal is ill either with a fever or
    with a cold. Generally, the vet will ask that you come back
    when the animal is healthy. If he doesn't, I'd find another vet!!

    The 3-way shot vets give once a year last "approximatley" a year.
    What I mean by approximately is that the actual number of months
    that the animal is protected against each one of the 3-way diseases
    varies - protection from one of them may be for 10 months, another
    for 15 months, and the other may be exactly 12 months. Vets feel
    comfortable enough to vaccinate every 12 months to maintain an
    average amount of protection. The vet I use doesn't feel that
    vaccinating 2 a year helps at all. This was a concern I had
    with my show babies. I asked if they should be done twice a
    year and he said no. What I do instead, is bring them in a
    little earlier than the 12 months (partly to make me feel better
    and just to be sure that none of the 3 protections have worn off).

    Sorry to ramble, but I just didn't want you to waste your money!
    If Verne has a cold, it's probably a good idea to bring him in
    for a quick look see - if he got out he could have picked up
    a little something.

    o.k. i've made a decision. whether or not they are in need on going
    for 'flu shots' i'll take them anyways on saturday. have verne
    checked out about a cold, and shirl and her drooling (i saw that
    note too) i'll just listen to what he has to say about the flu shots,
    you never know, grandma could of gotten it mixed up.

    thanks for all the support, who wants to help me get them in the
    car?

    Well, if all else fails, try a pillow case - entice them in
    with a toy or treat then tie it up - they can still breath
    through the material.

    Gash, for some strange reason, I always thought that you only put
    your cat in a pillow case to bring to the vet when you had to have
    the cat put to sleep. Glad I've been proven wrong. .

    And all those tears I cried after leaving the vets office all those
    times. . .

1912.17and they live happily ever after...ASABET::AQUILIAWed Nov 16 1988 13:0326
    well, its over and done with. i took the kitties to fitchburg (in
    a storage box, you know, the one for sweaters and stuff?) anyways..
    i didn't feed them in the morning (boy were they p____d) and left
    about noonish. i got about 10 miles up and heard a uuuggg noise,
    then smelled something. shirl was sick. and verne was peeping
    his head out of the box with this expression on his face like he
    was ready to kill me. i could hear in his meows that he wanted
    out and he thought it smelt terrible in the cramped little box.
    then he sat in it. (white kitties too!) she got sick one more time
    and when we got there it was all over her paw and on verne's tail.
    norman cleaned them up real nice for me and told me that their was
    some kind of a cold going around with the cats and that the upper
    respiratory shot would help fight it off. i assume he knew what
    he was talking about. after that, their temperature was checked
    and ears.  they were pppppppppppeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrfect.
    of course. he commented they were getting big and verne is a chubba
    but we already knew that. all in all for $10 it was worth it.
    they were fine on the way home to. just slept and when i lifted
    the cover to see if they were ok. verne got out and sat on my lap
    for the rest of the way home.

    what a bunch of cuties-

    thanks again for your support.
