1899.0. "I want a cruetly free face" by UBOHUB::HOOD_S () Thu Oct 20 1988 11:53

    Hello Everyone,

Recently, I have decided to throw away the absolute rubbish
floating about in my tatty old make-up bag and start anew
(as soon as I have some money to do so!!)

My problem is that ladies behind the counters in many large
stores in my town tell me that something is not tested by
animals and yet it does not say so on the packaging and is
on the list I have of "baddies" I keep in my bag. Also,
the only one I have found which says on the box that it is
o.k. does not appear on any lists I have as being cruelty
    free!

    Where do I start!?

Denise Perry (NOTE1758) gave a wonerful list of cruelty
free cosmetics - the trouble is that most are Amercian
and I cannot find them over here.

The two I have the most problems with because I like them but
are not sure if they are 'safe' are INNOXA and ALMAY.
ALMAY - I was assured by the lady on the counter is NOT tested
on animals but it appears on the list as a postive animal
tester and does not say it isn't on the box.

INNOXA says it's o.k. on the box but doesn't appear on the
    list.

Can anyone help me with these or any alternative cosmetics
    known to be safe?

    Thanks a lot,

    SANDY.

    Hi Sandy,

FYI, There is a note #21 in SMALL_ANIMALS conference that has
many sources for catalogues on cruelty free products, where to
write for more info etc. I would recommend you start looking
there because there is some good info.

I really commend you Sandy. I have a terrible time finding products
as you do. I can 'VERY REMOTELY' understand why animal testing would
be needed in the pharmecutical/medical companies but NOT COSMETICS.
I have seen much literature that indicates that these companies
have other means of testing. Regardless of either I think more
regulation on this is in order! I have one of just about everything
at home and when I look at their faces and think what other people
are doing to their species, I really get SICK!

AZIZA makup by Prince Matchabelli is not on the list but they are
pretty much just eye makeup. CORNSILK and PHYSICIANS FORMULA have
facial products such as base and powder etc. and are easy to find.
GILLETE and REVLON are the worst abusers and from what I have heard,
people that are finding this out are returning the unused portions
of the products saying they aren't satisfied and so far GILLETE
has had to return several thousands of dollars because people are
boycotting the cruelty they inflict on animals testing things like
deodorants by spraying them into rabbits eyes etc.. (I won't get
into the details but I have heard that cats are being used also!)

Anyway, I hope this little bit helps, and please check out note
    #21 in WORDS::SMALL_ANIMALS.

1899.2what about neutrogena?SKITZD::WILDETime and Tide wait for NormanThu Oct 20 1988 14:4521
Good plan - as the only thing I can use on my body or face is Neutrogena,
does anyone know what the status of this vendor is? I really mean the
only thing - I've tried every other "hypoallergenic" product available
with terrible results....cracked, bleeding skins, swollen shut eyes, etc.

JUST FOR THE RECORD....(this is NOT an attempt to start an argument):

CATS AND DOGS ARE NOT USED FOR COSMETIC TESTS...RABBITS AND MICE ARE
USED....Cats and dogs BOTH are reactive and highly sensitive to drugs
that are not bad for most humans - so they cannot be used for such tests.
Their immune systems are too different from humans in most cases.
The rabbit's immune system is much nearer the human...thats why they are
used.

My vet is very active in pet protection programs and she admits that
cats and dogs are not used to test cosmetics. Ann Landers also has
published this fact in her column.

THIS DOES NOT MEAN I THINK THE TESTING FOR COSMETICS IS OKAY...but facts
is facts, and cats and dogs are not used to test consmetics.

1899.3I have a listCSC32::K_WORKMANNo Dukes!Thu Oct 20 1988 15:0319
I have a list of all the companies that DO USE animals to test
their products. I can send this list to you electronically if
you want, just send me mail. This list is put out by an organization
called PEOPLE FOR ETHICAL TREATMENT OF ANIMALS (PETA). You may
want to write this group to get details on the types of animals
and testing that is being done. I understand that some companies
have pending law suits for doing testing unlawfully to "unapproved
    subjects" whatever this means.

Anyway.. Lets just hope that what we suspect is going on isn't
really the case and that something will be done to further regulate
    this type of testing.

Ps. Furthur discussion might be better in SMALL_ANIMALS since they
have a note on this allready with some good contribution.

A good source of products that don't involve animal testing, etc.
in the U.S. is your local health food store. Perhaps it would be
the same in the U.K. You do have to ask in the store which products
    are in this category.

> Re: Neutrogena Have you tried Basis soap, sold in pharmacies?

Yes, and I had a reaction - seems I'm allergic to some basic material used
in almost EVERY kind of soap - except the neutrogena liquid for face and
shower or bath...I really have no choice in the matter, but I was curious
if the vendor was acceptable re: animal testing...I can only hope so.
Testing new products has been too painful for me to try anymore "test drives".
Oh well, curiosity is not limited to cats...

      Re .2
Neutrogena is on the list of companys that DO test on animals....
(This is the list issued by P.E.T.A.) P.E.T.A., for those of you
who do not already know, is "People for the Ethical Treatment of
    Animals"

I also DISAGREE with your vet! I have in front of me at this very
moment a picture that was sent to me in a package from Doris Day,
who is well known and highly respected in the effort to eliminate
cruel and unnecessary animal testing. This picture was taken by
a member of an animal rights group who became employed by a lab
that tests cosmetics and household products. This picture is of
a Beagle! From it's neck to it's tail the hair is gone...and the
skin that is left is a raw, red, bloody, infected horror.
THOUSANDS of cats and dogs are tortured every day by cosmetic
    and household product testing labs.

If you want to REALLY know what is occuring, contact one of the
many animal rights organizations in the U.S.

P.E.T.A. is one of the best.

      For information write:

                    Treatment of Animals

                    Washington, D.C. 20015

      Or contact:
                   The Doris Day Animal League
                   111 Massachusetts Ave.
                   Washington, D.C. 20001

Or contact "The Humane Society of the United States"
(I don't have their address handy, but will get it
                    if anyone wants it..)

I also have copies of the P.E.T.A. lists of companies that DO
and DO NOT test on animals, and would be more than happy to send
a copy to anyone who wants to send me a note at the above node...
I am NOT asking anyone to have the same views and/or attitudes that
I and my wife do. That is a matter of individual conscience. I DO
ask however, that each person who is GENUINELY concerned about the
cruel and inhumane treatment of animals in our allegedly "civilized"
society take some small amount of time to try to find out the TRUTH
about what companies are doing. I think you will be astounded and
sickened when you DO find out.
The Reader's Digest recently (March '88) printed an article written
by a Dr. White that refuted many of the findings of the animal rights
organizations throughout the U.S.. Dr. White's major 'contribution'
to society has consisted of transplanting monkey's heads from one
animal to another, removing the living brains of dogs, cats and
monkeys, and his research has been condemned by ALL of the scientific
community as being 'worthless' and 'inhumanely cruel without any
scientific merit'. When confronted by the President of The Humane
Society of the United States, the Reader's Digest REFUSED to consider
evidence that discounted Dr. White's medieval torture and innacurate
and untrue statements. I have recently packed up 22 Reader's Digest
Condensed Books, three sets of Stereo records and sent them back
to the Reader's Digest along with my subscription cancellation.

I'm sorry if some of you are offended by my reply. I'm NOT sorry
that I feel the way I do!. I cannot ignore cruelty to helpless
creatures. I just wish I could do more, but I don't make that much
    money.

I and my wife have given homes to 12 examples of human cruelty
and irresponsibility. Nine of them are dogs that were either abused,
abandoned or neglected. All of them were within days of being killed.
We also have three cats. Two were dumped by their so-called "civilized"
former owners on our street, and they found their way to our doorstep.
The third cat is a three-legged baby that was caught in a car's
fan-belt when it was six months old...the owner decided that it
wasn't worth the money to have it repaired, so a kind friend of
mine asked to have him, and she paid for the bill to have his front
leg amputated and brought him back to health. I wouldn't trade
a HAIR from ANY of our babies for MOST PEOPLE that I know.....
NONE of them deserved to be treated the way they have been!!!

Enough.....I apologize for my emotional outburst....It's very hard
for me to NOT get agitated when I think about the human indecency
    in today's society...
