1867.0. "My poor baby" by USAVAX::LLOBOV () Thu Oct 13 1988 13:24

I love this file. Some of these stories make me laugh others make me
    cry. I always get strange looks while reading this file.

    The real reason that I am writing this is to ask your opinions about
    my cat. She is a chocolate point siamese and she lives with my
    mom ( I visit her regularly). Recently her nipples have become
    hard and have a bluish tinge. The vet said that there is nothing
    that can be down other than cutting back on her food intake.

    I am really worried about her. She is 11 years old and I love her
    dearly.

    I am looking forward to your replies.

    Thanks for listening.

    What does overweight have to do with hardening of the nipples??
     Maybe ask another vet....

1867.2Opt for Second OpinionZEKE::HUTCHINSFeathered Obsessions AviaryTue Oct 18 1988 20:2512
    I think I* would ask for a second opinion. I have assisted surgeries
    where we did radical mastectomies. At the very least, ask to have
    a needle aspirate done. This process extracts cells, the cells
    are smeared and stained and checked under high power
    microscope...Abnormal cells stain differently and are all the wrong
    sizes. Before I settled for "sorry,nothing we can do" I'd at least
    try that option, and it can be done in the office. The process
    takes about 10 minutes, and then 10-20 more to read them accurately.

    Please keep us posted!  Thanks

1867.3The Laws of GravityZEKE::HUTCHINSFeathered Obsessions AviaryWed Oct 19 1988 16:0014
    re.1 over weight. Mostly the laws of gravity. Fat cells and tissues
    can sink to that area. But, I'd still seek another opinion.

    If you need to cut down her diet, this recipie is one we gave to
    our clients...it works well.

    take 1/4 cup of her regular cat food. Mix in 1/2 cup of pumpkin
    pie filling. She will get nice and full and think she ate a lot,
    but most if the food is squash, high in bulk, fiber and vitamins,
    and it won't stay with her long so to speak! I've used it on cats
    and dogs. It really works! Plus, it's less expensive than the
    prepared reducing diets sold by veterinary hospitals...

1867.4Interesting!TOPDOC::TRACHMANE.T.'s ZhivagoCats....DTN: 264-8298Wed Oct 19 1988 16:108
    Jean, that sounds interesting! Do cats like the pie filling?
    Is it loaded with sugar and other stuff? Guess if you buy
    the brand that has only pumpkin or squash, you get no junk.

    Hmm. Maybe I'll try it! I'm not crazy about pumpkin or squash
    pie, but maybe the kids will eat it.

1867.5read the labelTOKLAS::FELDMANPDS, our next successWed Oct 19 1988 16:5212
    It's been a while since I've made a pumpkin pie from a can, but I think
    you need to read the label. Some fillings will be pure strained
    pumpkin, so that you need to add all the junk to turn it into a pie.
    Others will be premixed, spices and all, so you just need to add eggs
    and milk. Obviously you want the first sort for the cats. Also, you
    can get pure strained winter squash (with trace of salt added) in the
    freezer section. I don't know which would be cheaper.

    This sounds like a neat idea. We'll have to try it, too. Fortunately,
    if the cats don't like it, I will.

1867.6When I come back from Canada, I'll try itTOPDOC::TRACHMANE.T.'s ZhivagoCats....DTN: 264-8298Wed Oct 19 1988 17:4910
    It sure sounds like an interesting idea - it's funny, while at a
    cat show, I saw a woman feeding Gerber mixed veggies to one of
    her cats - I was amazed - the silly cat loved it !! Hmm, maybe
    the cat wasn't so silly after all - I think I will try picking
    up a few jars of baby squash (I'll check the label first) and
    see if Katenka will eat it! She eats very small amounts 4 or 5
    times a day, this might be a treat for her. Then I can try the
    cans at home. Sure will be fun to see if the kids go for it!

1867.7Gee Thanks!ZEKE::HUTCHINSFeathered Obsessions AviaryThu Oct 20 1988 15:2516
    You can use the flavored filling, but you'll defeat the purpose
    with the fillers additives and sugars...As was mentioned. Just
    use the plain squash (can or frozen) and add just a pinch of salt,
    our cats like the pie spices added though...Don't use raw eggs for
    the cats tho...

    My own cats eat grapes and apples and ususally broccoli. In fact,
    that's what most of my birds live on...

    Adding the canned cat food makes it smell like cat food, and the
    cat's do not turn thier noses up at it as quickly...

    Thanks for thinking it was a good idea!

    If I have time this pm after work, I'll see if I can pick up a
    jar to take to Canada - I'm itching to try it!! TenkaBabies is
    a real small eater - I usually have to hold the plate to her
    face - D%^m cat - I always worry that she doesn't eat enough
    at shows! Maybe a little more variety will help - I try
    beef, chicken, turkey, and lamb baby food & canned cat
    food - she still eats small bits 3 or4 times a day...
    will let ya know...

    thanks again!
