1861.0. "things that go bump in the night!" by BIGMAC::SADLER () Wed Oct 12 1988 15:14

In a previous note, I told of my adopting two cats from
the Lancaster Cat Shelter. Well, they are rather shy when
    we are home.

However, at NIGHT, the two of the COME ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As soon as we close our bedroom door at night (the cats have
the rest of the place to themselves), the 'sounds' start.
The cats really love each other, so we know they aren't
chasing each other in anger. But you should hear the noises....

Loud bangs, crashes, scraping, clawing, etc. The first night
we had the cats my husband went out into the livingroom looking
for prowlers, because these noises did not sound like just your
    average 'curious cat' sounds.

Thus, we have put away all breakables and claw-ables. Does anyone
know how much longer our new monsters will keep up the nightly
    ritual?

    Cathy,

I would say keep the breakables away for at least another 3 weeks.
Where the kittens are still getting used to the house, they won't
do much when you are around, once they get comfortable with you
they should slow down at night.

My 2 that I got Sept. 28, still run around at night, but they tucker
    themselves out by 1:00 am.

    Have fun.

1861.3Play with themSTAR::BARTHWed Oct 12 1988 15:259
Tristan used to do that all the time. As soon as the lights went
out -- off he went! We started playing with him in the evenings
to tucker him out a bit, and that did the trick. He'd get pooped
out and go right to sleep. We don't make a nightly ritual of it,
but if he seems wound up, or if he's been sleeping all day, we try
to play a bit before we go to bed so we won't be kept up all night.

    Good luck with them,
    Karen, Tristan and Tenzing.
1861.41 1/2 and still goingDELNI::HYERWed Oct 12 1988 15:317

Mine are 1 1/2 and still at it although for shorter periods of time.
They start about 10:00 before lights out and use the living room
as part of the race track. It is not safe to sit or particularly
lie on the couch. Best defense is to go upstairs and pick up the
    pieces in the morning.

It's hard to say because you have only had these babies
a short while. Some cats go to sleep when their person
does - lights out = all quiet. I am lucky enough to have
a house full that settles down when I do, "most of the time."
With, of couse, the exception - last night! GRRRRRRRR
Sasha decided that she didn't want Misha on "her" (my)
bed, and talked, and talked, until I woke up (it was 2 am, GRRRRRrrrr)
and chased her with a slipper out of the room. Good thing
no one saw that action - me chasing a 7 lb. cat with a 4 oz.
    slipper.

Anyway, some cats will adapt to your routine, some will not.
I think that cats under the age of 2 are more active and will
play more - after about 18 months - 2 years, they seem to
mature and settle down some. I find males, under the age
of 2, to be very busy - less so as they reach full growth.

My older 4 cats don't ever give me a problem at night unless I
accidently try to stretch my feet at night and bang Taffy, then
she lets me have it. The two new kittens who are almost 8 weeks
old don't get a chance to bother us at night. I put them in the
spare bedroom with litterbox, food and toys (I remember Cinnabar
at that age). The main reason for this is I'm afraid that if they
try to sleep with us we will roll on them and not beaware of it.
I have had nightmares with this and have woken up screeming.
When they are bigger I'll let them have the run of the house like
    I do for the day.
Not sure if I'm going to get any sleep once I do.

1861.8Night time adventure at our house too!MEMV03::ROGUSKAThu Oct 13 1988 11:0916
This is funny, .0 that is. This morning when I got up I peeked
into my son's room - he's three, the picture on the wall next to
his bed was in his bed. Now this is a LARGE cloth picture of
fire engines etc streched on a very light wooden frame taking up
a good portion of the bed poor Sam was curled up in a corner of
his bed. Then I went down stairs - the fire place screen was in
the middle of the living room floor. There were various "things"
in the kitchen knocked over, on the floor, etc. The den was pretty
much in the same state of disarray!

I guess Trigger comes out of hidding in the night and he and Pooh
go at it - I slept through it all so I guess it wasn't to bad.
But Trigger is still in hidding - has just moved from behind the
desk to the kitchen cabinet, in with the pots and pans! But hopefully
these nightly adventures will make him feel safe enough to come
out when we are around - Sam and Mike still haven't seen him yet!
1861.9Who's there?????BRUTWO::SOBEKThu Oct 13 1988 17:139
Sometime in the early hours before dawn something went bump in the
night in our house. I took inventory of the bed and found that Sheba
and Sity were deep in sleep at their usual spots. Assured that both
cats were safe I happily went back to sleep (until Sheba woke me
an hour later with one paw in my eye and another in one ear. Good
grief!) This morning my husband and I searched the house but could
find nothing out of order that would account for the quite loud
item that I heard hit the ground. Hmmn... Could it be that the
Birman I have been longing for was visiting my dreams??????????
