1858.0. "cat self-training" by DNEAST::FIRTH_CATHY () Wed Oct 12 1988 09:26

    Recently we got a touch lamp for the living room. Smokey has learned
    that if he touches it that it will go on. If I return home in the
    daylight the light is NEVER on, but now if I return home after dark,
    it is on its lowest setting so that I don't have to leave the light
    on all day or have a timer. The first few days this was not true.
    He must have done it accidently once and now knows how to manipulate
    the lamp.

    Thought it was interesting .... he has come up with other imaginative
    ideas as well. He is 6 months old. As an adult I am not sure what
    he will be up to besides 24 pounds. Right now he is taller and
    longer than Bandit who is 2 1/2! He is NOT a maine coon cat either.

    We have touch lamps, too, in the house. Mijo right away learned
    how to make them work. It's amazing how quickly they learn how
    to make them work.

    I ended up putting the lamps in my spare bedroom because he liked
    having the lights on all the time. I would shut it off and he
    would go over and put it back on. What a riot!!!!!!

1858.2*I HATE PLANTS, MOM*AIMHI::OFFENWed Oct 12 1988 14:067
    DejaVu is just the opposite. She doesn't like lights so she is
    forever turning OFF my plant light. My poor plants don't have a
    chance with Deja around.

    If we leave the door to the study open, the cats hop up on the desk
    in there and turn the light on - which is sort of funny, except
    that, as the only lamp in the room, it is one of those big old "student
    lamps", a big brass thing that tales 200w bulbs but produces glare-free
    light for doing work, so it wastes a lot of electricity and gets
    warm in there if a kitty decides she prefers the light on! I try
    to keep the door shut...

    I have a lamp on the desk with a pull chain - my "chewers" like
    to chew on the chain, therefore, pulling hard enough to turn the
    light on, much to their surprise each time they are successful !
