1838.0. "Halloween = All the kids indoors !!" by EDUC8::TRACHMAN (E.T.'s ZhivagoCats....DTN: 264-8298) Fri Oct 07 1988 12:55

I know this is a little early, but I hope you all will start
    thinking about it EARLY.

It's almost Halloween - please remember to keep all of your
cats indoors at least 3 or 4 days before and 3 or 4 days
after. I should have said keep ALL your pets that can
stay in - IN - dogs, bunnies, etc.

Halloween is the 31st, which is a Monday night this year.

I'm lost....I would assume you mean keep kitties (& others) in due
to all the little people running wild throughout the evening and
possible danger/harm. But what is the 3 days before & 3 days after
    for? I'm lost....

Hallowe'en (Gahd, how I detest this 'holiday') usually has a loosely
defined duration of 3 days before and 3 days after. The activity
after the date subsides pretty quickly tho...

I park my car behind the house and listen to the stereo in the dark
    tht night...

1838.3Just call me "Humbug-Halloween" KOBAL::HORNFri Oct 07 1988 17:0011
I agree! I just HATE halloween, it's a license for delinquint
kids to harm other people's property (which I feel they do
     enough during the year).

Definitely a good time to keep the cats in. I always fear that
I will find my poor kitties hung out on the mailbox, if I leave them
out. And, since they don't know how dangerous it is to them, they
pester me to go out all evening.

     Halloween, yuk!

In my area - Framingham, MA - there is a nasty night called Cabbage
Night which is the night BEFORE Halloween. I came from Ohio and
had never heard of cabbage night until I moved here - and I don't
think it is observed in too many areas - thank goodness. Any person-
kids or adults - who want to be mischevious usually do it on C.N.
Many years ago it was simply paper on trees or soaped windows -
nothing really harmful, however, in the past couple years many
people (including elderly) -their homes, cars, etc - also innocent
animals - have become targets for "cruel jokes". No-one and nothing
is exempt from their "pranks". I personally have not had anything
happen to me but that is only because of luck. My animals are indoors
anyway but I feel bad for the others who are outside that night.
The best thing that can happen on C.N. is RAIN!!! I also hope for
RAIN on Halloween. Halloween used to be fun but not anymore!

1838.5Keep them in! Keep them in!PARITY::WHALENAnd may the traffic be with youFri Oct 07 1988 20:2514
Absolutely! All animals in for the holiday - since it falls on
a Monday, that means the Thursday night BEFORE is the time to make
sure no one is left outside.
I lost my kitty once when I was in fourth grade on Halloween,
my mom tried to keep him in, but he slipped out when my dad got
    home at 9:30.
A week later, my kitty (Kitsa), and about half dozen other neighbor
hood kitties were found gruesomely tortured with toothpicks and
hung on a tree to die in the woods.
Very gruesome indeed, but I warn you, do NOT let them out!!!!!!

What happens on Hallowe'en in the US? Is it NORMAL to torture cats?

We have fireworks here on 5th November, when it's safer to keep
    cats in, but that's all.

1838.7Often enough to be wary...WEFXEM::COTEBlind Lemon PledgeMon Oct 10 1988 10:5323
    > What happens on Hallowe'en in the US?

By and large, it's mostly kids coming to the house for candy.
Even this is being curtailed by local ordinance due to sick-o's
spiking the candy with pins, razors, drugs, etc... It's rare but
it happens. There's also a spike in vandalism to cars, mailboxes
    and what-have-you.

    > Is it NORMAL to torture cats?

No, but it happens often enough that you wouldn't want to play the
    odds with your beloved pet.

Personally, I'd like the holiday banned and see some major butt
get kicked for anyone partaking in non-private 'celebrations'. It's
become nothing more than an excuse for destruction and mayhem.

I agree with you Ed. I leave my dog out in the back yard
because his bark is loud and nasty when people come into the
front yard. There were a few years when I would sit out in my
car in the driveway to prevent 'kids' (older teens) from doing
destruction to our and neighbors property. Not much fun but
it's getting better as towns ban house to house treating.

Yes, definitely keep your loved ones in!!!!!!!!!!

A few years back, when I was living in Pepperell, my daughter went
for a walk in the open field behind our house and came across a
    cat that had been beheaded.

My babies are locked into my bedroom for the evening so they can't
sneak out the door when the kids are tricking-treating.

I agree! PLEASE leave your kitties and puppies in the house.
EXPECIALLY if you have a black kitty. They seem to be the worst.
They say it's bad luck for a black cat to cross your path, but in
some cases, it's bad luck for the cat. ALL my kitties are going
to be put down into the refinished basement on Halloween night so
    that they don't sneak out!

How many people will dress up like a cat for halloween?

Last year I dressed up as a cat, I have long back hair and I fluffed
it up with lots of hair spray, I bought kittie ears and wiskers.
And I painted my face with black eyeliner kinda like the faces in
"Cats". I also made a tail with a long piece of wire and fake fur
which bobed around as I stood or walked.

Funny part was when I came downstairs and came face to face with
my cat Sheena, she arched her back, fluffed her tail and spit at
me!!! My husband and I died laughing!! BTW later he put on one
of those huge ugly masks and she didn't even bat an eye!
