1725.0. "Cat Care on Video Cassette" by GYPSC::SHIPLEY (Is there life after DEC) Thu Sep 01 1988 08:26

    As I have already written in this notes file, I am living and working
    in West Germany at the moment and don't get the chance to see my
    own furry little friends very often and none of my acquaintances
    here have cats. So it was a nice surprise to receive a parting gift
    from my wife after one of my trips home of a video cassette (not
    unfortunately of our own cats, a situation I intend to rectify at
    the newxt possible oppurrtunity) but one that she found in the local
    shops in England. The title is "Cat Care" and covers every aspect
    of cat ownership from the history of the breeds through to breeding
    and showing, from selecting a cat or kitten to a full sequence on
    bathing and drying a cat (if my memory serves me correctly the cat
    being bathed ready for a show was a Birman.. they're getting around).

    Although my wife and I have had cats for many years, and most of
    the information in the video was not exactly news to me, especially
    after reading this notes file, the video itself is very entertaining
    and would be purrfect material for anybody thinking of getting a
    cat or kitten. (Also it made me feel a lot better just to see the
    furries on the video playing and mainly just being themselves -
    maybe this could be a solution to _your_ problem Elaine??? I mean,
    if you can see but not touch...8^)} ).

    The video runs for about 60 minutes and comes complete with a set
    of reference cards covering the different subjects. The presenter
    is Johnny Morris, a nature and animal specialist and TV presenter
    since even _my_ childhood. At the end of the video, Johnny talks
    for a few minutes with Desmond Morris, author of "Catwatching" and
    "Catlore" amongst others and asks a couple of the questions answered
    in those books.

1725.1A Birman, yet!!!BRUTUS::SOBEKThu Sep 01 1988 14:4913
    The video sounds wonderful.. It appeals to me both because it feature
    a Birman and because I have so much to learn about
    care/breeding/showing if I'm going to undertake breeding/showing
    Birmans in the future.
    I have one concern, however. My son recenlty returned from London
    with a video tape he was delighted to have, only to learn that it
    is not playable on the equipment here in the US. There is information
    in the Video Notes that explains the reason for this. Do you know
    if the tape you mentioned is made in a format that will play on
    our US tape players?
    Thanks for sharing the info with us.

1725.2I'll check it out - how much are they??EDUC8::TRACHMANE.T.'s ZhivagoCats....DTN: 264-8298Thu Sep 01 1988 16:5311
    Thanks Brian - I should look into obtaining this - my cat club
    just bought some videos for the local schools - to educate kids
    on cat care,spaying, and neutering - hoping to start the education
    process young!

    Yeah, it sure is all over if I touch one! Even worse if I hug them
    warm furry little bodies!!! If I look them in the eye, we are on
    the way home.....sigh

1725.3...and I WON'T carry home a PAL machine!!CLUSTA::TAMIRACMS design while-u-waitThu Sep 01 1988 17:0511
    Well, before we all get toooo excited and I get lots more requests
    to bring the tape back on my next trip to the U.K....VHS format
    in Europe is called PAL. They are not compatible with VHS here
    in the States. You can find a place that will convert PAL to U.S.
    format, but last time we did it, it cost $70.00 for one tape (YIKES!!).

    You might try your local, friendly DEC A/V department to see if,
    by some chance, they've got a PAL machine, but I don't hold out
    much hope.
