1710.0. "Good to Bad Litter Box Habits" by ATEAM::ZELNICK (Helen Zelnick, 261-2018, NIO/K11) Mon Aug 29 1988 17:10

When I got Smokey a cute Manx cross kitten, who is about 10
weeks old, two weeks ago, I litter box trained him and he was good
for a week. His litter box is cleaned regularly. Lately I have been
finding feces on the floor. It partly looks like he defecates in the
litter box and then brings it out onto the bathroom floor.

Musetta, my 11 month old cat, frequently croaches outside
the bathroom door. She has mixed feelings toward Smokey. Can she be
exciting him (threating him ) when he uses the litter box causing this
problem? I have to keep the two cats separated most of the time because
    Musetta can play very rough.

I notice Smokey will jump out of the litter box if I should open the door
when he is using it. When he and Musetta are 'playing' he sometimes
will run around or hide behind her litter box.

Please give me your advise. I don't want Smokey developing bad
    litter habits. Thanks.

Sounds like Smokey might be getting a little overambitious when
trying to cover up and knocking stuff right over the sides.

You can buy a 2 piece litter box that has a snap-on top thats
very hard to get litter et al past....

Most of the kittens we have taken in over the years had a habit
of playing with the solid waste. It was (and again now) not uncommon
to come home and find "something" floating in the dogs' water dish!
Pretty gross, but eventually they grew out of it. Hopefully our
newest addition will get over it REAL soon...

Maybe he needs more privacy. A friend of mine has a litter box that
looks like a small dog house there is an entrance at one end and
the cats go in and you can't see them until they come back out.
This in turn does two things, keeps ALL the litter in the box and
they seem to feel like they have more privacy.

He could also be in a rush to cover like Edd suggested and shoots
the little lumps over the side. My older cats do this every so often
I think that they don't want to miss anything, so they are in a
rush to get everything covered up and get out of there.

    Good Luck,

1710.4Try the Booda Box!SALEM::DEFRANCOMon Aug 29 1988 19:1411
    Helen,

The box in .3 might be what's called a Booda box. I have one and
it's great. The cats must actuall crawl under the extended lid
and over into the box. It gives them good privacy and keeps everything
in the box where it belongs. this box also has a charcoal filter
on the top of the lid as to eliminate odors. It really works!

    Hi,
Where can I find one of these booda boxes. The most
recent addition to the family seems to be able to
kick his litter in to the next room.

Andy, I got my booda box at Dodge Grain, located in Salem, NH.
I don't know where you live but any good pet shop or grain store
    should carry them.

    Andy:
A lot of pet stores & grain mills now carry the Booda Box. Also,
you can order directly. (I buy their cat-pan liners & filters in
    bulk.)

I have a covered litter box but the cats still manage to get litter all
over the place. It seems the litter sticks between their toes and when
they leave the box, they leave a trail of litter. Is there any special
box that will take care of this problem? The only thought so far is to
put one of those fake grass welcome mats in front if it which would
kinda rub out the litter as they walk over it, but if someone has
    already dealt with this problem...

1710.10Dustpan and Broom ExpertPOOL::MURPHYIs it Friday yet?Fri Sep 02 1988 17:546
I keep my dustpan and broom handy. It seems I'm always sweeping
up after each one uses a box. The only one that doesn't seem to
carry as much out on her feet is my "featherfooted" girl cat, Holly.
The boys always manage to take sand with them. Must have something
to do with feathering on feet?

1710.11VAXWRK::SKALTSISDebFri Sep 02 1988 19:087
nope; Pip has huge tuffs of fur between her toes, but she still
manages to track litter all over the house, although I must say
that the boys seem to track more than the girls. I guess that maybe
    the girls are just neater.

The point was to stop it before it got too far from the litter box, or
better yet, stop it from leaving the little box. I would like to spend
my life in things other than following the cats around with a dust
    buster. :-)

Maybe I'll try the bathroom vanity idea someone else had in this file
with a fake grass mat in the entry/exit drawer...

1710.13maybe a high pile scatter rug could helpVAXWRK::SKALTSISDebTue Sep 06 1988 17:376
Our boxes anre in the bathrooms, and one thing that I've noticed
is that since I put high pile scatter rugs down at the box's entrance
there is less litter tracked outside into the rest of the house
(Litter on dark hardwood floors is *very* noticible).
