1665.0. "The wild one strikes again!" by ICEBOX::FEASE (Andrea Midtmoen Fease) Wed Aug 17 1988 12:42

Now I know Fluffy's the wild man of the house (at least, the
*feline* wild man), but this is ridiculous ...

Yesterday morning, Fluffy came to visit me in the bathroom
as usual. His mouth looked a little funny, like he had spit on
himself, so I took a look. Lo and behold his left side looked like
a walrus ... his left bottom fang was sitting at a very *strange*
angle, sort of like a bucktooth. Well I looked in his mouth and
the tooth moved a little, so it was off to the vets!

By the time the vet took a look, very little was holding that
fang in. There was no way to save it. So, she took it out (office
visit). There's still some root in, but we are hoping that the
antibiotics will keep infection away until the hole covers over,
so that surgery to remove the root can be avoided. She checked
his jaw to make sure he hadn't broken it (he hadn't) as she said
it was unusual for the fangs to break like that; seems the fang
is the strongest of the teeth. Looks like he hit himself on a corner
of the furniture or (I think this more likely) he was chasing either
Bigfoot or Loki and missed and slammed into a wall or some furniture!
He definitely hit something; he couldn't have lost it in a cat fight
with one or the other of the two.

Poor Fluffy. His right ear is slightly mangled from a cat
fight long ago. Now his left bottom fang is gone. What's next?!?!

I recently had a similar situation. I noticed that Oscar had been
drooling quite a bit. I din't worry since he had eaten my fish
for supper that I had cooked with lots of cayenne. I figured that
the spices irritated his mouth. 2 days later I noticed that he
was still drooling. Upon examination of Oscar's mouth, I noticed
part of his tongue was missing -- the left side was mangled up.
Well, of course this has to be Saturday at 12:30 when my vets office
closes at 12:00. So I had to decide whether I should go to an
emergency hospital or wait until Monday morning. Since Oscar was
still behaving normal, eating, sleeping, cleaning himself, etc.
I decided to try to wait until Monday. By the time Monday mrning
rolled around, Oscar's tongue began to get a definite shape back,
    and he wasn't drooling anymore.

That was about a month ago. His tongue still has a spot missing
from it -- kind of like you used a paperpuch on the edge of it.
I talked to my vet abuot Oscar' tongue when I brought Portia in,
and he said that there was nothing he could really do, except
prescribe antibiotics, but since Oscar's tongue was beyond that
stage, there was nothing I could really do. I'll just have to wait
    for it to grow back.

I hope Fluffy turns out OK.

Hi! Fluffy's doing just fine. He's gone through his week
of penicillin (amoxicillin) and the gum seems to have healed over
the root. He was a little listless during the medication; it makes
them dopey, I think. However, he's now his usual wild self ...
with a funny looking grin when he opens his mouth ;-) !!
