1601.0. "LUMPS?" by UBOHUB::DAVIES_A (Abby National) Mon Aug 01 1988 09:56

My two beasties have both developed lumps - any advice?

Christy (1-year-old female) has small lumps under the skin under
her chin and on her chest. The skin doesn't seem to be broken,
and her fur is not coming out - there are about ten small lumps in
all. They don't seem to be causing any discomfort....

Her brother Spike has similar lumps on the back of his head, and
also a few under his chin. Again, no hair loss or discomfort so
    far, it seems.....

Having consulted my "cat-care" manual I am concerned that they could
have picked up a burrowing parasite of some sort - there's lots
of open woodland and a lake near us with other wild animals around.

    Any advice welcome......

My McCafferty suffers from the same ailment, I'm not exactly sure
of the medical term, but basically it could either be one of two
reasons: allergic to self or allergic to fleas. McCafferty happens
to be allergic to fleas. I brought her to the vet to be diagnosed
and at that time she was given an injection and also some pills
to take. The injection worked, the lumps went away and if they
start to re-occur, I just give her 1/2 of a pill (1/2 about every
2 weeks or so) and I also make sure she doesn't have any fleas.
This condition can be controlled, so no need to worry. I would
bring them in to the vet to get checked out.

    Good luck,
    Erin

My friend's cat has the same problem - her vet says allergies
of some type - he also gave her (cat) the injection & pills.
I think it's cortisone in the injection. It was suposed to
last 4 months, but they came back sooner.

    Thanks for the advice......

I'll cart them up to the vets tonight.

Will let you know how it works out!

What did the vet have to say about the lumps?
1601.5CONCLUSIONUBOHUB::DAVIES_AREBEL YELLFri Aug 12 1988 07:5721

Sorry it took a while to conclude this story - it's been very hot
over here, the vets has been very busy, and as the beasties didn't
seem to be uncomfortable we waited a little while.....

In short, they have HARVEST MITES. Apparently a seasonal parasite
that lives in long grass (which we have nearby) they are tiny orange
mites that attach to moggies in clumps and they bite! They eventually
raise a scab and become itchy, though ours hadn't got that far.
The reason for the lumps *under* the skin was that our beasties
are allergic to the little horrors and had shown a swelling before
    the typical scabs.

So if you see a similar symptom and it's hot weather, between end
of July and September, and you have harvesting or long grass where
your beasties live, this could be it!

Thank you all for your interest.

    P.S. Forgot to mention treatment....

Flea spray or whatever you use, 'cos the mites are parasites.
    Plus...
Lotion from the vet to dab on the scabs with a cotton wool ball.

Clears it up in about a week, but watch out for re-infection.
