1570.0. "Cats really stink!" by BUZZER::VACCARO () Wed Jul 20 1988 20:02

    Hello,

    I have question I would like ask. I did not scan past notes so
    maybe the question has already been asked but here it is any way.

    I have two cats that let me stay in their house with them. (My
    wife and I maintain and pay for the place but trust me, they own
    it). They often sleep on the back of the couch especially in the
    winter. Always the same place. Anyway, even after having the couch
    cleaned it has a very "catish" odor. Also, when one of the cats
    was learning to use the litter box I think it got confused and peeed
    under the stairs. Now, whenever it gets damp in the cellar (like
    in the summer) I get a very strong odor of cat pee.

    Does any one know of a product or a method of getting rid of this
    smell? Is there a way to get rid of the smell from fabrics and
    furniture with out damaging or staining? A friend of mine mentioned
    a product called "Bitter Apple" that is a smell that cats dislike
    but people can not detect. You could use this as a preventitive
    measure but I don't think it does anything for eliminating odors.

    Anyone got any ideas.

    Dave V.

    P.S. I've talked to both of them a million times, they just walk
    off or roll onto the floor and twist themselves into some painful
    looking position. For some reason I just don't think I'm getting through.

    Actually, they DO understand - what they are saying to you is,
    "Not now Dad, we are busy being cute."

    There is a large note on odors - I'll bet someone can point you
    to it!

    I thought Bitter Apple was the foul-tasting stuff parents painted
    on kids thumbs to keep them from sucking their thumbs. Holly has
    the urine-smell cling to her long hair on her behind every so often;
    that's why I keep a towel thrown over her favorite nesting place
    and dump the towel into the wash periodically. I hear some people
    even wash their long haired cats because of this...ha-ha. ha-ha-ha.
    I prefer living.

    Dave,

    Sprinkle a box of baking soda under the stairs and let it sit for
    awhile...

    Or sprinkle some on the couch and take your wife (?) away for the
    weekend...

    The stuff works wonders if given some time.

re: 1570.2

Washing long-haired cats.....do it on a REAL hot day..seriously, I have
no wounds this time so they must have liked getting cool, if not the
method.

But I do understand a reluctance to bathe the cat....my Sam was sent home
from two groomers looking just lovely - red bow and everything - with a
note saying, "lovely cat ---PLEASE DON'T BRING HIM BACK!"

1570.5Not on the Carpet!!UBOHUB::HOOD_SThu Jul 21 1988 11:2514
    Dave,

    I am assuming you are in the USA so this product might not be available
    over there, but if you ever see s large bottle called (appropriately
    enough!) "Not on the Carpet".......BUT IT!! It's great, gets rid
    of stains and neutralises the smell (they make it for Dogs and
    Cats and also gets rid of strong food/coffee smells if spilt on
    furniture or carpet)

    Good luck, may your cellar have a speedy recovery!!!

    There's something else that works wonders on "ancient cat odor";
    I tried it myself.

    Unfortunately I can't remember the exact formula--it's white wine,
    salt and something else. But I *do* remember where I found it.
    Don't laugh--look in a copy of Peter Straub's "Floating Dragon";
    the protagonist in the story restores old homes. The one he moves
    into was previously owned by several cats, and he got rid of the
    odor that way.

    Really!

1570.7I don't remember the name...IAMOK::GERRYGo Ahead, make me PURRRR...Thu Jul 21 1988 13:1213
    I bought a product at the Springfield Cat Show, but I don't remember
    the name of it off the top of my head.....It's available in several
    forms, either in little pouches or in a sprinkle type granular
    substance. This product works GREAT!!!!! The woman that was selling
    the product was telling me about how it worked on a sofa that had
    been sprayed.

    I think Pennie bought some too.....I'll post the name of the product
    and how to get it tomorrow....unless Pennie knows it offhand.

    	Arm and Hammer makes a carpet deodorizer. T.K. took a wizz
    in my car once in his excitement at being picked up from the vet.
    I sprinkled the Arm and Hammer on and left it for the winter and
    its all better now!

    Karen. That didn't sound good at all. I don't have a urine smell
    in my long hair! :-)

    RE: .7

    Cin, I think the stuff was called "Non Scent". I bought some.
    It works wonderful.

    You also might want to try something like "CAT OFF"...or any
    other product (in *liquid* form) that is made to neutralize
    animal odors (e.g., cat urine, skunk spray). I found it to
    be wonderful the one time I really needed it for a couch.

    Sandy,

    That sounds like the product I've been looking for! Where can you
    buy it?

    Re: 9, 10. I'm with Ali, where can you buy this stuff? Pet store,
    the Vet., from a pro cleaning company?

    I didn't say anything in 0. but Buzzer ( the cat in question) took
    a pee in both our cars on the way to the vet. I've tried "Love
    my carpet" and baking soda. They've done a fine job getting rid
    of the odor untill it gets hot or damp or both, then there's no
    denyin, Buzzer was here....went here...somewhere.

    I'll go with that - where can you buy the stuff. Isis and Tarot
    have been having problems with the bad weather to the extend that
    mud and other things cling to their paws when they have been digging.

    They then walk it through the house and even after I've cleaned
    up there's still a faint odour.

    Sounds like this stuff is the answer to a hard pressed but still
    cat loving persons prayer.

1570.15"Not on the Carpet" tracked downMARVIN::JUBBAlison - Lead writer for PSI and LESThu Jul 28 1988 08:4816
    I've found "Not on the Carpet". It comes in a tall red cylindrical
    container, with a brush on the top for applying the stuff. The most
    prominent words on it are "Bissell" and "Accident Cleaner". The words
    "Not on the Carpet" appear in the top right hand corner of the "main
    display".

    Unfortunately I had to try it our this morning (having spent last night
    cleaning the carpets with one of those professional machines, the first
    thing one of the *&&%&*s did today was wee on the carpet :-{). I'll
    vacuum it up tonight, and let you know the verdict.

    Where can you get "Not on the Carpet"? I found it in Heelas in Reading
    (in the basement), so in the UK you should be able to find it in any
    John Lewis store.

1570.16Wash that smell right out there hairSNOC01::COUTTSBrilliance is just a sideline...Wed Aug 03 1988 00:4124
    I just keep washing the area with strong hospital strength detergents
    (eg: Demestos - dont know if you can get it over there, but its
    so strong it left holes in the knees of my tracksuit pants when
    I washed a floor with it undiluted). This really lifts the odor
    and the cats arent to keen on the resultant smell and stay away
    (pretty stron with amonia).

    Re: washing

    This really can be a life threatening exercise, but - worth it.

    Wear heavy clothing that you do not mind getting wet. Hold the cat
    close (actually cuddle it) and rub a mild baby shampoo or a very
    oily one (eg coconut shampoo) into the fur. Get a mug of water and froth
    the little bubby up and then when done keep drizzling water over
    them to remove all the soap. Wrap up in a towel and gently rub dry
    and contintue to cuddle to at least half an hour. Pop in front of
    a heater (not a dryer or fan heater - this seems to scare them and
    has a Hot then cold then hot then cold.... ad infinitum effect).

    Keep a good supply of antiseptic and bandages handy (for yourself)
    and don't get soap in there eyes.

1570.17NEUTRALIZE ODORSCECV01::KOVACSTue Sep 12 1989 22:5013
    Did you ever get out the "cat smell." I'm new, browsing, and
    don't want to take time to read all. Bitter Apple is for
    chewing: like on electric wires, etc. One of the best things
    against odor is either OUTRIGHT (very expensive, but to be
    diluted, and worth it) or plain old $0.59 white vinegar, diluted,
    or straight if necessary. Of course, ALWAYS test hidden surface
    before proceeding.

    Doubt I'll ever find this spot again...
