1566.0. "Request from an Expectant Owner" by UBOHUB::HOOD_S () Tue Jul 19 1988 14:46

    My cat, Dinky, has been getting very clingy and grumbly whenever
    we go out recently, and after talking to the local vet we believe
    that she is just lonely as we are both out to work and she is a
    very talkative cat.

    I am going this Thursday, to see a lady who represents the RSPCA
    Cats Home locally to choose her a friend but would be grateful on
    some advice from any feline-loving friends out there as to whether
    a boy or a girl is most likely to please her most (she herself has
    been spayed and so will the new cat).

    Also, any suggestions as to how I can make the new arrival's
    introduction as pain and trouble free as possible, both from his/hers
    and Dinky's point of view!!

    I'm sure Dinky is ready for a friend - she keeps bringing the
    neighbour's cats in for tea and seems to get great satisfaction
    in watching them eat her dinner and play with her toys!!

1566.1Same sexFSHQOA::RWAXMANA Cat Makes a Purrfect FriendTue Jul 19 1988 15:3420
    Well, I have always found that two cats of the same sex often get
    along better, especially when spayed or neutered. Of my mom's four,
    TJ and Fluffy, both males, love each other, but beat up on Taffy
    and Tabitha, the two females. Taffy and Tabitha like each other
    but hate TJ and Fluff! All of her cats are fixed.

    My two are both neutered males and get along fine. I am currently
    fostering a female who just had babies and she HATES my boys (Nikki
    wouldn't mind getting a close-up of her though :-)!

    However, my sister has a male and a female (littermates) who absolutely
    adore each other. Maybe it just depends on the cats.

    Hope this helps.

    BTW - what sex are the cats that Dinky brings in for tea?? Perhaps
    that will give you a clue.

    I would have said that she'd prefer a boyfriend - from experience
    with my own cats. But I think it probably depends on the cats.
    Whatever you get, don't expect her to love it for the first couple
    of weeks! But I'm sure that getting here a friend is the best thing
    to do.

    Helen.
1566.3Two of a kind maybe don't go...IPG::KCAMPBELLStrawberries 'n' cream weatherTue Jul 19 1988 17:0110
    Speaking from experience with my parents' cats, Yoni and Purdy I'd
    say you might be better off with a boy. These two are both females
    and absolutely hate each other, although they've lived together about
    seven years.

    The funny thing is they both get along fine with a stray Tom cat,
    Albert, who visits my parents' house every day...

    Do be prepared for a uproar for a few weeks, unless you're lucky,
    but hang in there, it is worth it when they finally cuddle up together.

1566.5Personality, not sexWITNES::MACONETue Jul 19 1988 18:396
    I would be more worried about personality than gender. You want
    to make sure that the new cat will have a complementary personality
    to your Dinky's. You don't want the exact same personalities, yet
    you don't want exact opposites.

    Good luck.
1566.6Two works well!SWAT::COCHRANEBeen there,done that,what's next?Tue Jul 19 1988 18:5517
    My two Siamese are both females, one neutered, one not (yet, just
    old enough now). They get along fine with each other, but have different
    personalities. There's also quite an age difference. Niniane is
    +/- 8 months, and Charm is 7 years. Charm is talkative, plump,
    and loves attention. Niniane is active, nosy, and hates to be held
    (Mommmmm, if you hang onto me I'll *miss* something. *That* age.).
    Give them 2-4 weeks at least to get used to each other. I gave mine
    separate food and litter boxes to avoid territorial fights, and
    picked Charm up on a Friday to give them two days with me around.
    After that, they both stayed in the same basement together while
    I was at work. They rough and tumble and run about together, and
    Niniane seems much happier and more independent with another kitty
    around to bother!

    We enjoy having twice the fun!!!!

    As I said before I don't think it matters what sex you get. I have
    the two boys as you know and used to have Dillans sister and all
    three got along just fine. I think Dinky will be more pleased with
    a play mate than what sex it is...she'll probably try to mother
    it either way.
