1510.0. "Bed Wetting? For a CAT?????" by MARRHQ::KORCHNAK () Thu Jun 30 1988 12:03

I have a strange case of a cat in some sort "rebelling" against
mom and/or dad and/or "associate in fur crime".

Shanti is great when it comes to using the litter box. There were
only 2 timeframes which she didn't; 1. should would pee in 2 corners
of the dining room -- diagnoally from each other. When my husband
and I got married, we piled the boxes in the one corner, and piled
some other stuff in the other -- she quit peeing there. 2. We cleaned
up that area about a month ago and she's started again - except
THIS time she pees in the one corner and poops in the diagonal one!

I haven't changed ANYTHING in the house except moving the boxes!
I have scrubbed the carpet many times, and still do everytime she
goes! The cleanser is not amonia smelling (it's called "Odor-b-gone")
and seems to take all the scent out of the carpeting. I've locked
her in the room with the litter box, and recently we put her bed
near the area she pees. My husband got home last night and she turned
the bed over and pooped in it! I've put down foil -- she still goes
on that. When I see her in the dining room, I get her with the squirt
    gun.

I haven't changed her eating habits, she still has all her toys,
her "associate" Charlie, hasn't really been bothering her any more
or any less, I havent' moved her litter box (except to put it in
the spot where she pees --- which she peed around it!), and I don't
give her any less hugs and kisses than usual! And the air conditioner
is left on a comfortable temp so she and Charlie don't get overheated!

I'm at wits end. I don't know WHAT to do! She and Charlie are an
indoor cat, and she went to the vets last week for a checkup, and
she checked out fine! Only that she's a few pounds overweight -
    but that's ANOTHER story!

Any other suggestions, barring giving her her own personal room
    with a litter box?

    Cheryl, Charlie and pee-in-her-bed SHanti

1510.1NO ANSWER BUT .....AIMHI::OFFENThu Jun 30 1988 15:567
I don't have an answer for you; just a question.

Where do you buy Odor-B-Gone. I need some for my couch.

1510.2try this...SHAPES::TAYLORSSharon, Dillan & Sammie - UKThu Jun 30 1988 16:2124

When one of my kittens had an accident in the corner of the room
once (before she was litter trained) Dillan thought that was the
place to "go". No matter how much I tried the water gun, smacking
and scrubbing the area he still kept using it.

I then came to the conclusion that it was the smell (not that he
liked that corner) that was attracting him. So...I took the whole
carpet up (it wasn't small either 22ft x 12ft) and hired a carpet
cleaner and cleaned it with some industrial carpet cleaner (sorry
I can't remember the name. I then totally disinfected the part
of the floor underneath (which by then had become bleached white),
let it dry thoroughly with as much fresh air as possible and then
had the carpet refitted but before letting Dillan back into that
room I covered that area with cat repellant.

Seems a lot of work but it was the only thing that worked in the
end and like you I was at the end of my patience and would try
    anything by then.

    Good luck

I have used a hartz product called "NO" sprayed on paper and placed
in the area. Nippa wont go near it, in fact she runs far from it!

What was the name of the cat repellant you used cos I am having
a problem at the moment with Fred scenting the furniture.

Also, if I get him neutered, would it solve the problem? He is going
to be done, but depending on the answer to this question, it may
    be sooner rather than later!

    Thanks

That was my next question: what is the best cat "repellant"? Is
it Hartz? Someone told me that the smell of the repellant was WORSE
than the smell of the urine! I don't know if that's possible!

The "industrial" strength cleaner I've used is "Odor-b-Gone". It's
only available through mail-order, and this stuff REALLY works!
The vet and the SPCA recommended it! My problem was that I didn't
order the BIG bottle, so I ran out rather quickly, and she started
peeing again. (Odor-b-Gone phone number can be found in the back
of Cat Fancy magazine -- I don't have one with me at the moment,
but when I do, I'll write it in.)

I don't want to be an alarmist, but one of our cats started wetting
the bed after contracting FeLV. You may want to have the cat tested
    asap.

Before you panic, there are a gazillion cats who have clobbered
a bed. I would imagine any really sick cat might go anywhere, but
clobbering a bed isn't anything like a for-certain indicator of
    FeLV.

Sorry I've been so long in replying but I haven't been around much
    this month.

Anyway I can't remember the makers name but it was a small bottle
of clear liquid that was called "@#***%@ Cat Repellant" you can
get it in any Pet Shop...I don't know if there is a "best" brand!!

Another thing I used to buy when I had the boys indoors was some
liquid you sprinkle over the cat tray to make it smell nicer..sorry
I know I'm pretty useless but I can't remember the name of that
either but if you go into a Pet Shop all the deodorizers etc are
    usually together.

P.S. I think unless you are planning to use him for breeding you
should have him neutered as soon as possible if he is already spraying
..that's a sure sign of when they need 'doing'...I had to have Dillan
neutered at 5 months but Sammie didn't start till he was over a
    year....but then Sammie was a little different..."only 1 had
    dropped!!!"

    re: original note

Any chance you changed litter recently? Your cat may dislike your
litter so much that she refuses to use it. It may be worthwhile
to try a new litter in any case. Another technique that may work
is to put some dry food or her water dish in the area where she
relieves herself. Cats will seldom mess their food area.

    Good luck.
1510.13Allergic to kitty litter!MARRHQ::KORCHNAKTue Dec 06 1988 13:1019
I FINALLY found out why Shanti had such a problem with the litter
box -- she was allergic to the dust that the clay/sand litter puts
out! I was putting new litter in the box, and she walks up and starts
sneezing TERRIBLY! She ran out of there so fast, and her eyes were
watering! It was terrible! Now, I've found a kitty litter that is
GREAT (keeps the odor down, and the cats don't mind it) but the
store I bought it from (Safeway) closed their store near me! The
name of the litter is Pine Fresh. It gives a great pine scent, and
I noticed that it turns to a sawdust type material when dirtied.

Has anyone else used this, and liked it as much as I and my cats
do? Now, the big problem: I live in the Washington, DC area (really
Annapolis, MD) and need the name of a store nearby that carries
Pine Fresh. Or, if there is an address I can write to or phone number
to call for a store near me.

    Any help is TREMENDOUSLY appreciated!

Kyrielle is allergic to all but the dust free litters. We use Tidy
Cat 3. Maybe you could try using sawdust or cedar flakes. Or how
    about Litter Green ($).
