1476.0. "New Addition" by NBC::FIRTH () Tue Jun 21 1988 16:44

About a year and a half ago we got a cat from the humane society
and since she was used to the name bandit we kept the name for her.
She has a very quiet placid nature - at least until "the intruder"
came in. The intruder is a six week old rescued kitten. The first
few days that Smokey was with us, Bandit hid out in the furtherest
closet she could find and hissed and spat whenever Smokey even looked
as though he might wander over.

Smokey is very unusual in that from the eyes back accross the head
and the top of the back he is pure grey. The bottom half of his
face is grey and white tiger stripes. His legs are grey and black
tiger stripes. His belly is white with blotches of grey resembling
polka dots. In the past week and a half the tiger stripes on the
legs seem to be appearing along his sides. His souble paws seem
to have 7 toes and on at least one I think there are 8! When I
got him his claws (even when retracted) hung out and would catch
in the rug or people without him trying to grab. A day and a half
later I took him to get his claws clipped since they were so little
I could not see the vein and did not want to cause pain. I think
at least one of the claws got missed though.

Now their behaviaor is interesting to watch as they play together
quite well. The wrestle and play tag and are funny to watch. Partly
because both are so unusual in color. Bandit is a dilute calico
with white pale grey and peach. Usually if I am cruel enough to
leave Bandit outside of the bathroom door, she will wait patiently.
Not so Smokey - the piteous cries have more than once deceived me
into thinking I had caught a paw - I open the door and instantly
he sneaks in. I have never seen such a curious cat.

One day I had to get something from the back of a refrigerator shelf
and the next thing I know Smokey had jumped up to the first shelf
and was trying for the next level up. He is like quicksilver and
impossible to catch. You would think a grown person with two hands
could catch a kiten and keep him, not Smokey.

Just wanted to shared the enjoyment of our newest member of the
    family.

Just a word of caution - be careful with so many extra claws,
it's easy to miss one when you're trimming and have it become
    	ingrown....

Missing claws is a verry real possibility. The day after having
his claws professionally clipped I felt a couple that had been missed.
The next time I will mention that fact. His claws are soooo tiny
and his ability to remain still is less than one second, so I do
not dare to attempt it quite yet. At the rate they are sharpening
up, I will have it done about every three weeks. Before we had
it done Smokey had torn one claw on the carpet so we got him on
a Wed. and he was fixed up by Thursday evening.

You all are correct he is about the cutest kitten I have seen.

    thanks

    Re: extra claws

My Bandit has an extra toe on each foot and I got him declawed (not
because the extra toes though). A few weeks later he was still
limping (I thought from the declawing) and I was worried so we
went back to the vet and discovered an EXTRA CLAW that wasn't even
belonging to a TOE. He had this claw between two of his toes.
I wasn't going to worry about it but the vet told me that of all
claws, these should be the ones to worry about the most since they
    can easily become ingrown.

If I were you, when your cat is old enough to be neutered see about
getting him at least partially declawed. Maybe just have the vet
remove the claws that are between the toes and on the extra toes.
Or get the whole thing done but remember that a declawed cat is
a very special responsibility since it can NEVER be let outside.

1476.7Lotsa toes can be a problemEDUC8::TRACHMANWed Jun 22 1988 13:277
Yes, I have a guy with lotsa toes - I am going to have to have one
of the extras on each front foot removed because they can't be
trimmed very easily. The only way I can get to them is if I face
him, and have someone behind him holding him (he weighs 14.5 lbs)
and I scrounch down under the paw to see under it and clip. Each
time I do it I pray that that's all I trim is that nail! sigh,
When he walks on the wood floors, I can hear some of his toes click.

Smokey likes to play, and if he gets bored, he will find someone
to play with --- usually about 3 a.m.! He will usually wake me
up when he wants someone to play with. Why doesn't he wake Cathy
    up?

He interprets the computer keyboard as a plaything whenever we are
trying to use our terminal at home. He will jump up on the keyboard
    - this definitely creates GARBAGE IN-GARBAGE OUT.

He has managed to convince our adult cat (Bandit) that she is also
a kitten and they will chase one another around and wrestle. Bandit
now definitely thinks she is a kitten.
