1435.0. "PETS ALLOWED APARTMENTS" by VAXWRK::DUDLEY () Mon Jun 06 1988 17:01

Note 1433 has prompted me to start something I've been meaning
to for a long time. Every time I read a note in here about some poor
person who has to find a new home for their cat because the place they're
moving to doesn't allow pets, I'd like to scream. I know places that
allow pets are few and far between. But there are some out there, so...

I'd like this note to be dedicated to listings of apartments or houses
that allow pets. If anyone out there lives in an apartment that allows
pets, or just cats, PLEASE ENTER A REPLY. If anyone knows of anyone else
that lives in an apartment that allows cats or dogs, PLEASE LET US KNOW.
(Name and address are all that is necessary.) Any town, any country.

My sister lives in an apartment complex in Billerica that allows pets but
I don't know the name or address. I will find out tonight and post it.

CAN ANYONE ELSE SUPPLY INFORMATION ON PLACES THAT ALLOW PETS?

I live in an apartment (townhouse) complex in Westboro, Mass. that
allows cats. You have to pay an extra $10/month to have a cat there,
but I feel it's well worth it. The name of the complex is
Windsor Ridge at Westborough, and it is located right off Rte. 9
    at the Flanders Road exit.

I could scream too. I live an apartment that Doesn't allow pets
but if they ever told me I had to get rid of Asia...forget it!
    Asia and I are a team...she goes, I go!

If I hear of any, I'll make sure I post them.

1435.3Concord, NH but who wants to live there:-)NSG008::POIRIERVacation soon!Mon Jun 06 1988 19:0213
I use to live in an apartment that allowed cats and small dogs.
It's on 20 Bog Road, Concord NH. They too charged you an extra
$10 a month for your cat. THe only stipulation is that they must
be fixed and they must be indoor. The second rule was broken for
people who lived on the ground floor and had immediate outdoor access.

I feel the same way as the others. When I went looking for an
apartment my stipulation was first and foremost that it allowed cats -
there was quite a selection in Concord; I had no problems finding
    several places.

1435.4Forest Ridge Apts/Nashua, NHWOODRO::PLATTMon Jun 06 1988 20:227
Forest Ridge Apartments in Nashua allows pets, mostly cats, some
dogs. I think you have to pay extra also, but don't know how much.
I never told them I had Pulitzer, but they've seen her often enough
and they know she's there. The complex keeps renewing my lease
(going on my third year there) and no word has ever been mentioned
to me by the complex owners. In fact, new people are moving in
all the time, and 80% of them have cats -- several "out door" varieties.
1435.5Cannongate III, Nashua,NHDRFIX::IVESMon Jun 06 1988 21:1323
If you live in the State of New Hampshire, the landlord CANNOT charge
you any more rent for a pet. This is the LAW. (Copy from the
Attorney Generals Office in Concord.) If they do charge extra for
a pet they must provide some kind of service for that animal. A
run, or something along that line.

The name of the paper to ask for is Tenants Rights. Very eye opening
to renters. If you rent you should have a copy if you are not
    familar with the laws.

I live at Cannongate III, Nashua, NH in a townhouse owned by a
DECie, and we are allowed to have pets. It depends on the owner,
and you must petition the association to see if they will accept
your pet. They never did this in the beginning (9 years ago) but
of course some folks spoiled it buy not being responsible owners.
It helps if you have a recommendation from your former landlord
mentioning that they had no problems with your pets. This is true
no matter where you go. (We have had Saints and Cats for years.)
Even talked a man into renting to us and we had 3 cats, 3 rabbitts,
and 3 Saints. Bless those recommendations!!!!

RE: 6- This sure looks interesting. One reply said that in N.H
you can not charge extra for a pet unless you offer some type of
service... Well now granted this was last year but we had called
Bay Ridge because I saw small pets welcome and did somersaults but
by the time I got off the phone with them.... If my memory serves
me right there was a pet security deposit I think of $250 per animal.
We had 2 cats so that was quite a bit of money. On top of that
an added amount (can't remember that) was added to your monthly
rent for your animals. The reason for the security deposit I could
swallow but plus the add on on the rent for what? Someone in their
checking may want to call them and find out exactly what they charge
If I have time today I'll get the scoop and type it in. If it's
still the same then it appears there may be a law being broken?

Village Arms Apartments also allows cats, but not dogs. When I
lived there, they didn't charge extra for having cats but you were
required to pay to clean the carpets when you left.

Village Arms is located off Rte 2a/119 in Acton (between Nagog and
    Rte 27)

Yup! That's right. I went to small claims court to get my deposit
back...the guy charged me $150.00 dollars extra for a cat according
to the JUDGE you cannot add on to a deposit for an animal! You
either ALLOW IT or you DON't! So read those tennant laws because
    they do work for you!

by the way we won our $150.00 back!!!!! And also alot of landlords
    feel they have a right to your deposit....they don't - it's your
money and they have to tell you where it is (meaning bank) and if
your there for more than a year you get interest and the only way
they can keep that money is if you do damage and I'm not talking
wear and tear - DAMAGE......it doesn't cost a whole security deposit
to clean an apartment and I know lots of people and myself have
clean dozens of apartments and still haven't gotten all there security
deposit back...even though there wasn't any damage.

So check it out and get copies of what you should know...it's your
    money!!!!

Wow, this does look interesting. I called up NH Legal Assistance
(800-634-8989) to get the relevant laws and information. The man
said he'd send it out today. As soon as I get it and read through
it, I'll report back here. I'm also going to find out exactly WHAT
a couple of the apartment complexes do here in Nashua. Stay tuned...

Okay West Coasters, any suggestions for Bay Area pets-allowed
apartments? I'm especially interested in those that boast
washer/dryers inside individual apartments. I can't stand the
mile-long walk to the community washers (and the creeps that hang
around). Also, is anyone out there aware of the California laws
with regards to pets, deposits, extra rent, etc.?

1435.14SCRUZ::CORDES_JABy the shards of my dragon's eggThu Jun 09 1988 02:0030
Sabonn, I look through the apartments section pretty regularly
    since I have 2 cats in a no-pets apartment. I've considered moving
a dozen times but haven't yet. My apartment managers must know
the cats are there by now but haven't said anything and I won't
bring it up. I've noticed alot more pets where I live and think
they are beginning to allow them now but with some type of fees/
deposit involved. I don't want to call and ask 'cause I don't
want to point anything in my direction. I live at West Park Apts.
on Payne Ave. in San Jose. The only problem is they don't have
washers/dryers in the apartments but they're not too far away.

I've been seeing alot more apartment adds in the SJ Merc/News that
say "small pets considered", "pets negotiable", or "indoor cats
considered". I can't think of their names right now but I'll try
to remember to check tonight. There is a new complex on Payne and
San Tomas Aquino called Viarregio that accepts pets but I don't
    know about the washer/dryer situation.

I also noticed an apartment complex on Capitol Ave. near Snell Ave.
that advertises with a huge sign facing Capitol that they have
washers/dryers in each apartment but I don't know what the pet
situation is there and, you guessed it, I don't know the name of
the complex. Its not "The Woods" but its near there.

Seems I'm only half the help I wanted to be when I started this.
Can only come up with one or the other, not both requirements.

I'll try to check tonight and add them tomorrow.

I just moved Saturday from a nice 2 story townhouse that allows
pets. Its located 3 miles from Los Angeles Intl. Nice neighborhood,
washer and dryer are down the driveway, in a laundry room, but the
landlady is overly careful about who is around. Her apt. is right
next to the laundry room and she has four Boxers. She has 3, 2-story,
2-bedroom duplexes on the property. I loved the place and so did SY.

In case anyone wonders, Sy and I moved in with my fiance, into a
3 bedroom house. If it wasn't for this move, I would have never
left this apt. until I bought a place of my own.

If anyone wants move details I would be happy to share them. Please
    call me.

Thank you for the input. I was looking in the Classifieds yesterday
and to tell you the truth, there just aren't that many places that
boast an in-unit w/d. There are some that have hookups. I may
have to sacrafice one luxury for the other. And you can't hug a
    washer/dryer, can you?

This isn't much help for Mass, but when I was in So. Carolina pets
were allowed by animal size and apt. size. They would be listed
as "Studio - no pets," "1 bedroom - 15 pound limit," etc. That
way somebody with two great danes wouldn't be allowed in a too small
place and that way spoil it for the rest of us.

In case anybody is looking for a new apartment right now, my lanlord
currently has an apartment available in my building, and he allows
cats! (as well as birds, fish and lizards). The apartment is located
in Pepperell, right on Main Street. It's 3 rooms, ground floor,
private entry, fenced in backyard, offstreet parking. The landlord
is a super nice guy, in process of painting the house, planting
rosebushes, etc. All he asks (in addition to rent on time) is for
his tenants to be mature and responsible (i.e. if you like to hold
wild parties into the wee hours of the morning, and/or pass out
drunk on your front steps, this is NOT the place you want to live).
I commute to Maynard which takes me about 40 minutes. However,
it's only about 20 minutes from LKG or ZKO.

If you want more information, you can call me at dtn 279-3089, or
you can call the landlord directly. Tom at 433-8611.

Don't quote me on this, but I recall the rent being $500 per month
plus utilities (gas heat, everything else electric).

I am just planning to move out of my place in Framingham
(to look for a cheaper place). My Apt complex is
"Edgewater Hills" on Rt 9 in Framingham. They have a
supposed "no pets" policy but there are dozens of cats
and the management will look the other way as long as no
neighbors complain about your animals. I have had 2 indoor
cats for 1 year in a 1-bedroom apt, and the management knows
about Jake & Munchie but still invited me to renew my lease.

BTW this is a "luxury" complex, with pool, heatlh club (FREE
to renters), basketball court, security and other amenities.
Very well run and managed. Lots of kitty playmates for your
    cat too :_)

I'm looking for an apartment in the Nashua area for two humans and two
cats. We've just sold our condo and will be renting while we look for a
house. We're going to put most of our stuff into storage, so we'll have
minimal furniture, a one bedroom is fine. It would be great if it had
a washer/dryer, or hookups. Forest Ridge would give us a six month
lease, but we'd prefer a tenant at will. We could also house sit or
rent a place that's on the market.

Looking for a place to live! Preferably in the Leominster, Lancaster
or Clinton area for my daughter (21) and myself along with 3 cats.
    All are indoor!

Ideal would be a condo (Townhouse) with 1 1/2 baths, 2 bedrooms
Living room, dining room, kitchen, parking for two cars, allow one
waterbed, and a place to hookup my washer and dryer. Also, a
garbage disposal, dishwasher and Air conditioner.

Can afford $650 a month but would prefer $600...especially if heated
    by oil.

An apartment would be better for us on the second floor - 5-6 rooms
    - offstreet parking for the cars and a w/d hookup and A/C.

Please call me at DTN 276-9323.

    Thanks,

I'm looking for a roommate to replace me in the house/apartment I'm leaving.
You could move in anytime this month -- just give me time to move out..

The house is in West Concord, a short walk from the train depot, public
basketball courts, and a 99 pub. Everything you need for the good life!

The apartment is great! It's half of an old house in a quiet neighborhood.
It has two floors, and the decor is straight out of Country Living, with
a homey, cluttered, antique look. The place is fully furnished except for your
bedroom. There's storage space in the basement and attic.

Rent is $435; utilities are extra. My roommate smokes and is very neat.
She's a good roommate; I'm moving simply because I've got a better deal
elsewhere.

CATS ARE OKAY -- I had two, and she loved them.
She and her boyfriend played with them, fed them, even
brushed my Himmie... they were perfect substitute
parents whenever I wasn't around. If you need housing now,
and you've got a cat, I'd check this place out FAST.
Depending on how much your cat sheds, please expect to
               vacuum twice a week, however.

If you're interested, contact me (Kay) via mail or at DTN 226-7887.
Or call my roommate (Gigi -- rhymes with Twiggy) at 369-5769 in the evening.
