1361.0. "Question for Breeders?" by TPVAX3::ROBBINS () Thu May 12 1988 12:41

This question is directed to those of you who breed their cats
and/or belong to different cat associations. Is it common practice
for breeders to consign their leftover kittens over to a pet store?
My sister's boyfriend on an impulse action bought a maine coon kitten
from a local pet store for a very high price as far as I'm concerned.
I was very upset that they had bought from a pet store but an now
even more upset now that the little kitten has tested positive for
feline leukemia. The vet feels the kitten caught it from the pet
store. This doesn't sound right to me and am concerned if there
are any laws governing quality from a pet store. They were told
upon purchase that the kitten came from a leukemia free environment.
At this point I'm just curious as to the fact of the breeder as
I know that the kitten did come from a local breeder. What IF the
kitten was born with it from the breeder. Do breeders normally
guarantee their animals are leukemia free?

Not responsible breeders, but like with anything else there are always jerks.

Also, I can't imagine a pet store paying alot for an animal. I don't
know how much he paid, but there's a good chance the store is what made most of
the money.

Very possibly since many vets are convinced that it is spread through the air.
Unless the kitten was tested prior to entering the store, there is no way of
proving this.

We go to great lengths to ensure a disease-free environment. However, anyone
with an active male and female can say there are a "breeder". There are no
other requirements.

You now know why it is so important to buy only from a respected breeder.

I can comfortably state that that breeder is not a member of MCBFA
or TMC, (or at least is breaking the rules if they are). Both have
membership clauses that prohibit selling to pet stores.

Now that we are on the subject of breeders, how about sharing with
us fellow noters a list of Breeders who participate in this conference
as well as the type(s) of cats they breed. I've always been a bit
    curious.

1361.4WRO8A::CORDESJAThu May 12 1988 18:4723
I am very sorry that your friend is having such a bad experience
with his purebred kitten. Most of us (breeders) do go to great
lengths to insure the health of our kittens. Most respectable breeders
also do not sell to pet stores, not only do breed clubs prohibit
it, but most registering bodies (CFA etc) also prohibit it.

Unfortunately, there is not much recourse for your friend since
the pet store will probably just offer to replace it with another
kitten (who also might have leukemia) if they do anything.

For those of you who want to buy a purebred kitten, please check
with your local breeders first. It will save you possible heartache
    as well as money.

Before a kitten leaves my house, it is taken to the vet for a thorough
examination after which I have the vet issue a health certificate,
a leukemia blood test, and a fecal test. The kitten does not leave
the the house until the results of these tests come back negative.
The new owner gets the health certificate, and a signed letter from
the vet stating that the results of the fecal and the blood test
    were negative.

Quite awhile back there was a note called "Cat Breeders sign in
here". Most of us have put a note in. It can be accessed by typing
in 345. Or we could all sign in again since there are probably
    alot of new breeders.

1361.6Good idea!EDUC8::TRACHMANThu May 12 1988 19:275
Good idea, Jo - There have been many requests for various types
of kittens lately. If breeders would sign in again, stating
their breed, location, and phone number folks would know
    where to call for information.

1361.7We got your Birmans, right here!WRO8A::CORDESJAFri May 13 1988 19:3224
I guess I will go first.

My name is Jo Ann Cordes Brown. I breed Birmans under the cattery
name of Mysinhs. I am a small breeder (so far), usually only a couple
of litters a year. I usually have more sealpoint kittens available
than bluepoints but can get either color. Both of my females and
my male are seal carrying blue. I recently added a kitten of my
own breeding to my household who does not carry blue. And of course,
I am expecting a blue female kitten to be added to the household
in the next few months (I traded my best male kitten out of the
    last litter for her!)

I can be reached at (408) 779-0092. That is my home number. I
will have more time to talk and answer questions if contacted at
home since I am working PBX at the present time. My address is:

                16640 Lone Hill Drive
                Morgan Hill, CA 95037

(Yes, we finally bought our own home! Moving on crutches was the
most fun I have had in years-I went to a cat show with two of our
babies and Ken did the rest, came home and voila... new house!)

1361.8Persian/Exotic Shorthair Breeder58019::GERRYGo Ahead, make me PURRRR...Mon May 16 1988 18:0330
    Okay, I'll go second!!

I'm Cindy Gerry, and I breed Persians and Exotic Shorthairs. I
also have what would be called a small cattery, 8 cats, 2 males
and 6 females. My cattery name is: Cattyshack.

I don't have kittens all the time, usually a couple of litters a
    year.

I would never sell my kittens to a pet store....I'ld rather give
them away if I can't sell them. At least I know where they end
up. I usually let my kittens go at 12-16 weeks, with all their
shots, and a FelV Negative Guarantee. I do not test kittens, I
think the kittens are too little. I do test all adult cats at least
once a year. I also give a 30 day health guarantee, besides the
    FelV, just in case.

My male cat, Thesaurus' Great Balls of Fire, was the 1984-85 All
American Cat of the Year, and CFF Cat of the Year. He was on the
cover of Cats Magazine, October 1985.

I show my cats, and my main objective in breeding is to produce
    a show quality cat.

I hopefully an awaiting two to four litters of kittens over the
next couple of months. Anyone looking for persians, let me know!!

1361.9Egyptian Maus and AbyssiniansAQUA::GOLDMANMatt GoldmanThu May 19 1988 13:2915
Although I am no longer part of the "active" breeding program, the tradition
continues:

		TEMEK Cattery
		Egyptian Maus and Abyssinians

		Tobe and Elmer Goldman
		52 Gregory Road
		Framingham, MA 01701
		(617) 877-2515

Many of the Maus have ranked nationally over the years. As with other quality
breeders, a clean bill of health is guaranteed.

Although we do not breed Maine Coons, I can refer to a quality breeder.

1361.12ODE TO THE CAT BREEDER58205::GERRYGo Ahead, make me PURRRR...Mon May 23 1988 15:0950
Here's a poem I found cute a few years ago....I thought other breeders
    might enjoy it!!!

    ODE TO THE CAT BREEDER

If he talks on the subject of cats, he's a know-it-all,
    If he doesn't, he's a snob.

If he doesn't stop to chat at the show, success has gone to his
    head,
    If he does, he's being a show-off.

If his cats are at all the shows, why doesn't he let the others
    have a chance,
If he doesn't go to many shows, he's afraid of the competition.

If his cats don't win then he doesn't know anything about brreeding,
If they do, he obviously knows the judge.

If he wins and thanks the judge, he is playing politics,
If he wins and doesn't thank the judge, he is terribly rude.

If he loses and congratulates the winner, he's a hypocriote,
If he loses and doesn't congratulate the winner, he's a bad loser.

If he doesn't promote his favorite breed all the time, he is no
    asset to his club,
If he does, he is no asset to his friends.

If he has been breeding less than 20 years, he is just an amateur,
If it is more than 20 years, he ought to step down and give others
    a break.

If he uses his own stud cat, he is apparently cattery-blind,
If he goes out for stud service, he must not think much of his own
    breeding.

If he sells kittens, they can't be good enough to keep and show,
If he keeps them, he obviously can't find buyers.

He is damned if he do -- and damned if he don't!!!

I don't remember where I got this, and there is no author on the
cut-out I have, so this is of course, reprinted without permission.

Well it's been a while since I wrote the original I figured
now that I know I would end it with a happy conclusion. Ashley
was retested yesterday and it came back NEGATIVE!! Well not that
it would have made any difference as we all had already decided
that no matter if the test did show positive (we had all resigned
ourselves to that fact) that she was not going to be put down but
live her life out for however long that may be. Mischief (the other
cat in the household) had already been tested and given the series
of 3 shots. So I guess it was just a nice surprise for the whole
family. Not that it would have meant life or death but just to
know that she has a long long healthy life to live.......

    Pardon me I'm just very happy :^) :^) :^)
