1321.0. "Woody wanted to be a dog..." by DHW::WILSON () Mon May 02 1988 19:48

    A couple of weeks ago our cat Woodrow surprised us by going
    for an evening walk with us.

    About 10 PM, my wife and decided to take a walk. Leaving the house, our
    20 month old tan tiger Woodrow met us on the front lawn and followed us
    for our walk. The walk was a little over a mile around the streets
    that surround our street. Sometimes Woody would follow behind by
    a hundred feet lurking in the shadows, other times he would run up
    beside us and be willing to roll on his back in the grass and
    have his belly rubbed.

    This behavior is more like one would expect from a puppy than a
    cat. This cat has clearly not heard that cats are supposed to
    act more independent. Has anyone else ever had cats that acted
    in such a manner?

    Alpha used to accompany us when we walked Teddy [the dog]. After
    about six months, Alpha demanded a lead. [He'd drag Teddy's out
    and cry if we tried to attach it to Teddy's collar.]

    Once Alpha had his own lead, he blissfully tugged and yanked on
    the end of it and ran around our legs trying to trip us.

    This was his only dog-emulation activity.

1321.2Taffy & T.J. like to walk, too!FSHQOA::RWAXMANTue May 03 1988 13:098
    When I lived at home with my parents, their cats always accompanied
    me when I walked the dogs, lagging behind and meowing. Only difference
    with them is that they would turn around at the end of the street
    and go back home. Guess they didn't feel like walking all that
    distance around the two blocks!

    My mom's cat always followed her around. You'd never know where
    he was, but as soon as she went to a neighbor's house, Sam was at
    the door crying to be let in.

    As for my own cats, they also follow me around, especially Ben (if
    Gonezo goes to far, he panics and really starts to cry). The
    neighborhood kids love Ben because when he follows me, they all
    come out to play with him. He also will follow me to neighbor's homes
    and cry at the door if we don't let him in. Ben even tries to follow
    us when we go bike riding! My S/O thinks this is real funny and
    started calling the cats "puppies" a couple of years ago because
    they act so much like a dog would. (At first I took offense to
    this but it really fits them sometimes, although I think my boys
    have an identity problem.)

    Monty, a red longhair tabby we had years ago was adopted by our
    golden labrador as a kitten.

    Because of the way he was influenced by the dog, Monty used to go
    for walks with my father and the dog, run to the front door and
    growl at the postman and eventually died of heart failure, a disease
    much more prevalent in dogs than in cats.

    Guess nature can be influenced by upbringing.

1321.5Yo, Rover, fetch boy...THE780::WILDEBeing clever is tiring..Tue May 03 1988 21:088
Yeah, but when they teach themselves to fetch....Tabitha will go "Find the rope"
when you ask her. She quickly retrieves the string used to place "catch
the wild string" chases around the house. Hannah and Nick both will play fetch
with me. They go get and bring back the catnip ball...they will do this
as long as you want to throw it.

    Smokey would follow me wherever I went wether it was to the local
    store or to a neighbor's house. He would wait at the door until
    I was ready to leave and then walk me home.

    Fluffy, his mother, loved to play fetch.

    These were two wonderful cats that I had before Lightning and DejaVu.

    DejaVu likes to run to the back door and beg to be let out (like
    Keisha) but won't go pass the threshfold.

    Lightning is all CAT.

1321.7Kitty Camp WalksBUFFER::HOFFMANJoan Hoffman, DTN: 276-9829Tue Jun 07 1988 20:4510
My in-laws' cats (daughters from one our our litters), Shadow and
Woodstock, go for a walk with my father-in-law through the dunes in
Wellfleet, Cape Cod! This is the only time they take a "stroll" - when
at "kitty camp"! My father-in-law has two routes he takes, and they
just either follow him (He said he feels like the Pied Piper!), or walk
on either side of him. They stop when he does, sit down, etc.

    Yes, I have a cat who is my companion when I am home. She walks
    with me around the yard and over to the neighbors, sits nearby when
    I am outside, sits in the garage when I work on the cars.
