    A Tabby is a cat with stripes.

    Sometimes the stripes are in a bulls-eye pattern, sometimes just
    random striping, and sometimes sorta spotted.

    Tabby's are GREAT!!!

1301.12Tabby is not a breedAQUA::GOLDMANMatt GoldmanTue May 03 1988 16:1421
A "Tabby" is not a breed; it is a a color pattern. There are 3 basic forms:
classic, mackeral and spotted. Unless from a controlled breeding program,
most "tabbies" are a mix of the above.

Many breeds consist of tabby patterns.

The general pattern descriptions are

	Classic = "bulls eyes" on the sides, shoulder "butterflys". A general
		pattern of broken "circles" surround the bullseyes.

	Mackeral = stripped body, bars on legs.

	Spotted = spots on body, bars on legs.

All 3 patterns have the characteristic "M" on the forehead.

Personally, I have heard nothing about Mass having a state cat. Maine, of
course, has the Maine Coone.

    It was voted in by the Great and General Court [aka State legislature].
    Now if they just give cats the right to vote ....

    Matt, should the bulls eye be a complete circle?

Ideally yes. The ideal pattern is a solid spot at the center surrounded by
concentric and unbroken rings. Note that the human eye notices a "reverse"
pattern if the lighter color is in the center (very striking with silver
tabbies!).

Obviously broken rings exist in show cats. This is one of the many aspects a
judge must consider when the classic tabby pattern is part of the breed
standard. It's also possible to have a perfect pattern on one flank and a
not so good one on the other. Such is mother nature.
1301.17Classic Tabbys are wonderful!EDUC8::TRACHMANThu May 12 1988 19:2213
    Thanks, Matt. I have a Silver Tabby and a red Tabby (HHP) - both
    classic. The silver has a complete circle - the red boy's circle
    almost makes it on one side and the other side is complete.
    Both boys have pretty butterflies and braceletes, though.
    They are a piece of work, the two of them. I sometimes
    think that they are related they stay so close - they are
    about 6 weeks apart in age and are very close. Lots of fun
    to watch, especially when they roll around on the floor together.
    All you can see is a pile of red/cream & sliver/black swirls
    tumbling around in a ball!
