1268.3won't work for everyone, alas!BUFFER::FUSCIDEC has it (on backorder) NOW!Thu Apr 14 1988 15:517
This won't work on every terminal. Your terminal needs to support
down-loadable fonts. Terminals that I know can do this are VT220's and
VT240/1's. Terminals that I know can *not* do this are the VT100 family.

I suspect that PRO's and VT300 family also support this feature.

    Great prompt, BTW it also sets my terminal back to normal screen

    I guess I'm not making myself clear here. I have a *VT220* terminal
    emulator with the VAXstation. I extracted the note, took out the
    header stuff, and @ed it. I do not get the plump pussy cat but
    rather that strange set of symbols. What am I doing wrong?

    Append it into your login.com file and do an @login or log out and

    all I get is a large square.

    On my VT220, using setup to switch to VT100 mode, I get the same
    symbols so it appears VT220 emulation is not quite enough for the
    special font characters.

    No slapping allowed! It's a great prompt & fun! You get an A+
    for sharing it with us. I, too, get funny symbols if after I
    execute the cat .COM file, and then do an ER, which is my
    symbol for the erase command - to get the cat prompt back, I
    have to do an @LOGIN, and then do @CAT. I think the cat's
    whiskers are messing up something, but it's really cute!

1268.22emulators that don't emulate, explanationBUFFER::FUSCIDEC has it (on backorder) NOW!Fri Apr 15 1988 22:0645

     ^^^^^^^^
I don't think you're doing anything wrong. Obviously, your VT220
"emulator" doesn't emulate *everything* a real VT220 does.  Down-loadable
fonts aren't used by much DEC software, so that feature probably got
prioritized off the list when they wrote the emulator. (Then again, maybe
it's a set-up feature or something. If there's documentation on the
emulator, it should say what VT220 features are not supported.)

Simplified technical explanation follows the form feed:

Fonts: Get real close to your screen, and look at a character. It's made
up of dots (pixels) in an 8 by 10 (or so) square. Some pixels are on, some
are off. That's how you can recognize a letter. The VT220 terminal (and
some others) will allow you to define your own "characters" your own way,
by specifying the pixels associated with a particular character. A set of
characters all in the same style is called a font. (You specify them in a
column of six at a time. "six pixels" = "sixel".)

What they did: It's actually quite a clever idea. What was done was that
a new graphic representation of eight characters which usually appear as
#$%&'()* was down-loaded into an alternate character set of the VT220.
Then the VMS SET PROMPT command set the prompt to be a string which says
"shift into alternate character set, print #$%&, do a carriage return,
print '()*, shift into normal character set, and print a >>". The new
characters, when printed in that order, draw a picture of a cat (or a
Snoopy, or a champagne glass, or other things). On terminals that don't
support down-loadable fonts, you might then see just the regular
characters:

#$%&
''();

Or you'd even see these if you turned your VT220 off, and then back on.

On my VT102, I just see a white blob.

I have squirreled away somewhere a font where all the letters are upside
down. (great fun for an unsuspecting person.)

    I tried it on a VT240 and it worked fine, so I deduced that the VT220
    emulator wasn't able to emulate the characters properly. .20 confirmed
    it, thank you.

    .22 ... well, some things are better left unsaid.

    Gee Sharon, I think that .22 was trying to be helpful and
    explanatory - maybe some folks will now be able to see

    p.s. For those fortunate few who have made the prompt work and who
    	have sealpoint cats, set the screen to 'dark text light screen'

    Rather than starting a new note, I though I'd add this to the
    collection of cat computer toys:

    If you have a VAXstation, I have recently been given a program to
    change the mouse pointer into many different shapes, one of which is
    a plump cat. To get it:

    $copy indebt::sys$public:patt.*  wherever-you-want

    In patt.cld there is a reference to sys$manager as that is where
    I put my copy.  Change sys$manager to wherever-you-want (sys$login,
    sys$system, etc). Then in that directory type:

    $set command patt
    $cursor cat

    Which will change your mouse pointer to a cat. To find out all
    the choices, type an incorrect cursor type:

    $cursor foobar

    which gives:
    -%CURSOR-E-UNKNPATT, Unknown Cursor Pattern \FOOBAR\
    -CURSOR-I-KNOPATT, Known Patterns are:
