1224.0. "Chort, Gorggle, Gasp!" by MARRHQ::KORCHNAK () Tue Mar 29 1988 17:45

I have a cat making "strange" noises...

When I bathe my cats (I have 2) I hold them by the scruff of their
necks. Charlie has not problems with this -- as soon as I let him
go though, he tries to sneak away.

However, Shanti makes a very unusual noise. I've been trying to
think of a way to describe it -- it's a small little sound that
sounds like it's cutting off circulation -- or something is putting
pressure on her throat (she sort of chorts). It doesn't seem to
hurt her, and I don't do it often (basically, only when I bathe
her) but it bothers me with the noise she makes.

She just had her yearly "physical" and the Dr. didn't find anything
    unusual.

HAs anyone else had this problem? Should I get further tests? Should
I look for other symptoms? Any suggestions?

If you're holding her by the scruff of her neck, you could be causing
pressure against the front of her throat and cutting of air or hurting
her a little. Push in against your own windpipe -- doesn't feel
    very good.

You may be pulling up on the scruff enough to cut off her air
supply and she may be choking - try putting your hand across
her chest and sort of putting pressure on that way - keeps
them sitting - or let her stand and put your hand on the
back of her neck and press gently or grab the two front
paws and hold them - two people bathing works real well
    also.

The noise you hear may just be "angry noise" - try another
    position to be sure.

Bathing a cat? Never thought about that...

Anyway, mine makes these exact noises when I pick her up and she
doesn't want to be. I think it's angry noises.

I was worried at first too.
