1152.0. "angry cats" by GEMVAX::GRANT () Tue Mar 01 1988 15:36

Yesterday, I picked up some worming medicine at the vet's. The vet
told me that these are the type of worms caused by ingesting fleas
(or flea eggs, I don't remember which), so I also picked up some
flea collars. When I got home, I put flea collars on all five cats,
and gave the medicine to them.

Sly did not take kindly to either treatment. It took two of us to
put the flea collar on, and three of us to give him the medicine.
He is a real love, but he _hates_ being made to do anything that
    he doesn't want to do.

Well, he was mad at me for the rest of the night, which I expected.
But, when I went to bed, I figured that all would be forgiven. Sly
usually sleeps with his paws wrapped around my arm, or cuddled in
between my husband and me. I really didn't expect him to be any
    different this night.

However, at bedtime, Sly took his own sweet time coming upstairs.
Once he finally came up, he got up on the bed and sat down next
to my feet, with his back to me. Then, he turned around, gave me
a dirty look, and walked over to the other side of my husband (as
far away as he could get from me), and slept there all night!

Now, this kitty was telling me in no uncertain terms that he was
really upset with me. Of course, I'm not worried about it; he will
be my friend again soon. But he was just _so_ clear about what he
thought, it got me to wondering in what ways other cats express
their disapproval to those that they own.

    Any "mad" kitty stories, anyone?

Marleen (Sly, Adrienne, Springer, Midway, Paws)

Boy, do I have a few.

Zildjian (baby) *hates it* when I touch her tail as she is walking
away from me. She hisses at me and wants to claw my arm apart.
Boy, does that make her mad!!

Spunky (the little one) hates it when I *playfully) step on her
tail lightly. She gets up, turns around and lets out a big mrouew.
I don't hurt her, mind you, but that really gets her goat. And
when I blow on her fat belly full of fur, she tries to swipe me
across the mouth! (I am ready for her)

    I love them both! anna

If I get up late in the morning and don't have time to pick Misha
up and tell her how adorable she is she goes into a snit. She is
a siamese and very vocal about her indignation. Usually she will
scoot down the stairs ahead of me then start storming around in
a circle going from the kitchen to the living room to the dining
area all the while cussing me out with something like "OOOOOO-OOO-
errrrrr-errrr....." If I try to make it up to her with a scratch
behind the ears she scowls at me(sort of krinkles her eyes and glares
at me sideways) then turns her back on me and sits stock still all
the while the tail going swishhhh-swishhhh.
Mozie, likes to climb up the back of the sofa and cat nap, but if
he is just there sitting about and you don't notice him while
you're watching t.v. he pats you on the top of the head a few times
    (claws concealed)
Jemma gets upset when new people she's not familiar with come into
the house, so she hides upsairs and now and then she sneaks down
and peaks around the corner. When mealtime is called she still won't
come down and if you go upstairs to find her she rolls on her back,
gives a feeble little meow which is Jemma's starving cat routine(as
she weighs in at fifteen pounds I know she's putting me on.
Well, there's a few of my indignant cat episodes.

When Alex gets angry with me, he totally ignores me. He goes up
to his daddy and tells him what a mean mommy I am and how I have
mistreated him. Then he sleeps in the laundry basket instead of
on my pillow. Talk about getting even!! On weekends when I don't
get up at 6:15 to feed him, Alex really lets me know he is hungry.
Heaven forbid he has to wait until 8:30 for breakfast. He acts
like he hasn't eaten in a week. It takes him about an hour to forgive
    me for the late breakfast.

I think you're supposed to let these "air out" for a few days before
putting them on the cat, to reduce the chances that the chemicals
will cause a reaction. Then check the cat's neck area for awhile
    after the collar is on.

RE: angry cats

Samson, my black long-haired angel, is almost totally silent under normal
circumstances...he has a very quiet cry when he talks to us...UNTIL we
place him in the carrier to go to the vets or the groomers. The cat
growls very loudly at anyone who tries to handle him but me or my roommate.
The vet was sure his arm was going, but Sam just hunkers down and growls
just like a doberman - he never bites or tries to claw, but he will
growl continually until he gets home. Groomers have been known to
request he not come back - his growling gets dogs in an uproar.

Hannah is the greatest actress of all time when it comes to grooming
time. She spits, hisses, swipes at my hand, and "tries" to bite me when
Marge holds her and I comb her or do her toenails. If I give her my
hand to bite, she doesn't really bite, but she LOOKS mean.. any other
time, I can brush her and she is just fine. It's just the IDEA of being
groomed when I want her groomed that gets her jaws cranked.

Neither cat hold much of a grudge....1 hour at the most....but then, I
am the primary feeder so they probably think they have to keep in my
good graces.

Tabbatha just got over a fit of being mad at her mommy yesterday.
We took her to a cat show this weekend and she didn't like it a
bit!!! She hissed at every judge and tried to scratch one of the
judges in the FACE!!! When we finally got home, she darted out
of her carrier and wouldn't go NEAR me or my neice all night. She
finally decided yesterday that she wasn't going to be angry anymore
and she jumped up on my lap and purred. She looked at me as if
to say, "Please don't do that to me again. I didn't like it a BIT!!"

Both of our Siamese cats have *very* unusual ways of expressing anger or
disapproval. Munchkin, when angry or upset with only me (not Peter),
sits down, stares right at me, and pulls out some of his fur -- then
gives me a look, with the tuft of fur sticking out of his mouth, as if
to say, "Who me? I didn't pull the fur out - no way!" I reply
(naturally, don't we all talk to our cats?), "If you want to mutiliate
yourself, go right ahead, but don't expect to make me feel guilty".
Mutu (the female), refuses to look at you, refuses to purr, her ears go
straight out of her head (like an airplane), and when she finally
decides to look at you, gives the dirtiest look - the old saying, "If
looks could kill.....". Sometimes you need to apologize to Mutu before
she'll talk or look at you or purr.

Regards,
J.

Hannah hisses at me when I try to make up...unless she is ready to make
friends after I make her mad. She is known as "Capt. Terror" because she
is SO stubborn about things and is more than willing to reprimand by
hissing or even hitting with her paw when you do something she does not
like...she also sits and growls when she is angry...just staring and
growling...it scares the dobie out of her wits when this stuff starts.
