1146.0. "Chauncey came home!" by FSHQOA::RWAXMAN () Mon Feb 29 1988 13:32

And he looked as if he never even left! I couldn't believe it!
Yesterday, Dana and I went with his parents down to the Cape to
see their new home. On the way back, I said to him, it has been
exactly two weeks to the day that Chauncey disappeared; wouldn't
it be weird if he returned today? Well, as we were walking up the
stairs of our apt. building, Dana opened the door that led to our
floor, and yelled, "OH MY GOD!" I flew up the stairs behind him
knowing exactly why he was yelling. There, sitting in front of
our door, was Chauncey, looking up at us as if to say, "Where the
heck have you guys been all day!" He was still perfectly white,
clean, and healthy -- even looked as if he had gained some weight
(not something he needed to do, mind you). We let him inside and
he danced around the apartment, purring like crazy, ran over to
his scratching post, batted his toys around, and just seemed very
glad to be back home! He didn't eat much but drank a lot of water.
I pulled out his bed and he slept most of the night -- he was SO
    tired.

Where was he for the past two weeks? Here is what I found out:
My neighbor across the hall said he saw a white cat jump out of
a silver station wagon yesterday afternoon. My deduction is that
Chauncey took a little vacation with someone in the apt. complex.
The week he disappeared was school vacation week so he must have
been nosing around inside the car while they were preparing to leave,
got locked inside, and wasn't discovered until they were either
at the vacation site or on the way there. Since they knew him from
the apt. complex but didn't know who he belonged to, they took care
of him until their return home. I could be wrong about this, but
it sounds like the most logical explanation, especially because
I have caught Chauncey jumping into people's cars and have had to
    shoo him out.

I had just about given up all hope of him returning, and am so glad
to have him back. The not knowing was the hardest part to deal
    with.

Schnitzel will be so glad to hear Chauncey has returned.....she
really was upset thinking a fellow feline had possibly come to some
horrible fate! However, I'll leave out the vacation part....she's
been nagging at me to take her on one....

Good, good, GOOD!! I've been praying for Chauncey to return home
safe and sound, and was so happy to see the good news today! You
must be relieved and very happy.

Now--if you haven't already, PLEASE get an ID tag and a collar for
him! My friends have kidded me for years about the way I hover
over my Billie, and the things I do for her; but I know how I would
feel if she got out of the house and LOST. Just having that tag
on him will give people HIS name, YOUR name and address, and most
importantly, your phone number. (In CAT FANCY, there's even a "Meow
Card" you can register your cat for that ensures people looking
for your lost kitty 24 hours a day)

That way, no one will mistake him for a stray. I'm sorry if I'm
being too pushy, but it was miraculous that he is back; having
an ID tag will be further insurance he stays that way.

Again, we are very happy for you all, and thanks for posting this,

The post cards may take up to two weeks - they do from Montreal
every time we send some home.

The suspense was killing us! Welcome home C-cat...

    WAY TO GO CHAUNCEY.......................

I wish I could have been with him. A vacation at this time of year
    would be wonderful.

Actually, I'm very, very glad to see that he made it back home.
We at our house were all praying for him.

Because cats that are out are generally asumed by a lot of people
to be out I found that tags don't help -unless- as I have had put
on my cats' tags the words "I'm lost if out!" with their name,my
phone number and address. This lets folks know that this wandering
    kitty shouldn't be a'wandering..

1146.14Tagging around the townLDP::BANGMAMon Feb 29 1988 19:2412
I say TAG HIM! My parents dog (sorry feliners) has run away from
home countless times (gets very disturbed when it's raining, etc)
and someone always finds her and brings her home.

If you just can't see Chauncey becoming an indoor cat, please tag him.
Most people who find a cat with a tag (hopefully never again for yours
truly) know that someone really cares.

Glad to hear he's home safe now!

1146.15Tagging - an excellent idea!FSHQOA::RWAXMANMon Feb 29 1988 19:4510
Thanks for all the nice homecoming welcomes - Chauncey will be very
happy to know that so many people were praying for his safe return.

I just talked to the vet about having tags made up. She said it
will take six weeks for them to come in upon ordering, so it doesn't
make sense for me to put in the order now since we will be moving
in four weeks. Best to wait until I have my new address and phone
number. So for now, old Chaunc's outings will be supervised by
    Mom.

1146.16Great idea!!MEMV02::BULLOCKFlamenco--NOT flamingo!!Tue Mar 01 1988 16:1510
    Re: .12---

What a great idea! I would never have thought of that one..I'm
going to have a new tag made up for Billie now with that added to
it. Poor cat, pretty soon she'll need her own wallet to haul her
ID around in! Thanks for the good suggestion!

    Again, welcome home, Chauncey!

1146.17Chauncey changed his name!FSHQOA::RWAXMANTue Mar 01 1988 18:2415
To give Chauncey a fresh, new start, his name has been changed.
Dana hates the name Chauncey, has never said it once since we acquired
him in December, and refers to Chauncey as "Kitty." So, last nite,
we decided to call him Joshua (Josh or Joshi -which I especially
like - for short). Chauncey never knew his real name anyway, since
I call him Chauncey, Dana calls him Kitty, and everyone else called
him Snowy before I adopted him, and still do.

So now, Mary Tamir, you are the proud owner of the one and only
    Chauncey in this Notes file!

Joshi says hi to all of you and said he'll send a picture after
his brother Nikki comes to live with us; he wants Nikki in the picture
    too.
