1138.0. "SMAUG" by SCOMAN::JLORE () Thu Feb 25 1988 00:41

                       -----< SMAUG >-----

HI, If anyone is interested I'd like to tell you about my cat
smaug. I know the name is a little unusual but I am a great fan
of J.R.R. TOLKIEN auther of the HOBBIT. In this book there is a
dragon named smaug. when we first got smaug I was In the midst of
reading the hobbit and smaug would curl up with me and stare at the
pages so I felt smaug was a good name.
I love cats but before we got smaug I hadn't even thought of
adopting a cat. One day my wife called me from work and asked if
I wanted a cat, so I asked her what brought this up all of a sudden.
she said that the boston branch of her company had sent a cat in
a box to them as a practical joke toward someone who hates cats.
she also told me that this woman who hates cats was about to have
it destroyed. WELL I'LL TELL YOU I never drove so fast in my life.
I went and picked up the cat and brought him home.
He was sooo skinny and as soon as I opened the box he dashed
for the nearest hiding place. when my wife came home she told me
the horrifying story of this cats life.
He was a mouser for this industrial equipment company in boston
and his home was the big garages where the equipment is repaired.
he lived on about a half a can of food a day at the most and
(this is not for the weak of heart)
he was severly mistreated. The people who worked there would starve
him and then make bets as to how long it would take him to eat his
food. they would mix speedy dry (a material much like kitty litter)
in his food and watch him choke. worst of all they would hang him
by the neck and listen to his poor cries. because of this he can't
meow like most all he can do is sort of a broken yelp.
We finaly persuaded him to come out from hiding and eat.
It's been almost two years since then and now smaug is one of the
healthiest cats you could ever see.

                                          thanks for listening
                                      JOE LORE

A curse forever on people who mistreat innocent animals. And a
blessing on those who save them!
1138.3A horrible story with a happy endingBAGELS::ALLENThu Feb 25 1988 10:4213

The thing that upsets me most when I hear about these things is
that Smaug is truly one of the very LUCKY ones... I hate to think
if some jerk had NOT sent SMAUG to the horrible woman who was about
to destroy the poor babe when your wife found him.

I shudder to think how often mistreatment such as this continues
unnoticed. It makes me ill. Humans can be so cruel.

Poor little Smaug for having to endure what he did before he met
you, but lucky little Smaug for finding you.

OH MY GOODNESS!!! Poor Smaug!!! Maybe it was an act of God that
those HORRIBLE people sent Smaug to the HORRIBLE woman just so that
you would adopt him and give him the love and attention that he
DESPERATELY needed. I'd like to hang people like that and see how
they feel about it. Or maybe mix kitty litter in their food.

    My sentiments exactly!!!

Kinda makes you wonder what makes those people so cruel....and if
they do that to an innocent animal, what do they do to their kids?

Good, Lord, anyone who treats any sentient creature that way are
not people they are monsters!!!! How many more of God's creatures
are out there being treated so cruelly? As I have been involved
with animal right for several years the answer unfortuantly is there
are legions. I worked for a while as a volunteer at a cat shelter
and the horror stories behind some of the rescued animals were
    horrendous;kittens buried alive,starved,set on fire...all in the
name of "having fun" as the kids that were caught doing this sort
of thing gave for an "excuse". These little monsters grow up to
be the big monsters who so savagely abused poor Smaug (love the
name). Also they are learning that many crimanals doing life sentences
in jail have past histories of being involved in animal abuse.
I am so very happy that Smaug found you and your wife.
Many cuddles to Smaug from me and my gang

    Joe -

It is so good to know that there are wonderful and compassionate
people like you out there. Smaug has been rewarded by a kind and
loving home - and you have been rewarded by his affection and devotion.

    A happy ending, thank heavens.

P.S. I hope Smaug is an indoor cat ????

    Best wishes,

Oh, God, stories like this make me want to track down those people
and inflict the same pain on them, only a lot slower and for a
longer period of time. It would give me great pleasure to watch
them suffer. To quote a good friend of mine: "I would like to
take all of the ignorant animal-haters out there, put them on a
leaky boat, and ship them out to sea."

Thank you for rescuing Smaug from those cruel monsters. Your story
brought tears to my eyes, and I'm so glad it had a happy ending.

    Re .2 and .7

I second you on cursing those who mistreat any of God's creatures.

I pray that God will bless those who care to do what is GOOD even
in the face of peers who do wrong, and that He punish (in this
world or the next) those whose hearts and minds are SICK!

    Joe -

Your story makes my heart wrench with sorrow and anger. We've all
heard of or witnessed cruelty to animals.

Your concern brought happiness to Smaug and your family -- YOU ARE
    VERY SPECIAL!

We need more Joe's in this world!!!

I know that "statistics prove" that animal abuse, child abuse, and
spouse abuse are linked; i.e., someone who does one is _very_ likely
    to be doing the others.

Let's talk about something more cheery. What does Smaug look like?
What are some of the things he likes to do?

    Joe,

It's too bad that Smaug isn't really a `dragon'. Then he could
`breathe on those horribly cruel `things' that had (can't say owned)
    him before you.

I HATE stories like this but at least this one has a happy ending.
Tell us more about Smaug, please, please, please????

Well Joe, as in the Hobbit story.... even though your Smaug is not
a dragon, he/she does have something in common with the one in the
    book...

sitting on a pile of riches!

Smaug, even though your cry is not too loud, you're story is sll
too clear... Have a wonderful remaining 8 lives!
