1111.0. "My Back Door" by RADON::BANGMA () Mon Feb 15 1988 12:55

Would anyone be interested in taking a beautiful, all-black, very
affectionate (no, I'm not a salesperson), female (I think) cat who
has been living on my back doorstep for the past week? She has
developed a fairly thick fur, but cannot be wild because she is
so affectionate. I don't think that she belongs to anyone on my
street, which is not very populated, because she sits on the door-
step from 7:00pm till we go to bed every night, and she's there
when we wake up in the morning. I am feeding her because I feel
    bad for her.

What I think happened (I've actually seen this happen too) is
I live near 2 dairy farms, and someone probably didn't want her
anymore, so they decided that instead of putting her to sleep,
they would drop her off near the farm and she'll have a chance
to survive. I know that her chances of survival are probably
worse on a farm; diseases from contact with many other farm cats,
or eating mice (or should I say rats).

Anyway, if no one wants her, I'll be looking for an animal
shelter in the Milford/Uxbridge area to bring her to. She'll
    make someone a great pet.

    I'm located in MR02 (Marlboro), DTN 297-7299.

Have you checked the lost and found ads in the local papers, and
posted some "found cat" notices on telephone poles in the area?

    Karen -

No, I haven't checked the local newspapers yet, but I am planning
on it. I just want the poor thing to have a home ASAP, so I'm
wondering if anyone would be interested if no-one claims her.

    I'll post an ad too.

Does the Middlesex News go out to your area? If so -
they used to provide a service to its readers wherein
a person who found an animal could place a "found' in the
Lost and Found section of the classified. The rule was that
each person was allowed only one "find" and they kept track of
persons by their addresses - not their names. Maybe they
still provide that service free. It's worth checking out anyway.

    keep us posted.

1111.5Someone, somewhere, please?LDP::BANGMAThu Feb 18 1988 17:4916
Guess what? She's still there every night like clockwork.

I called the Bosler Humane Society (ref. note 1088) and spoke with
    Elaine Bosler personally. She doesn't really want her . . . I
guess I can understand why. She gave me the name of a woman in my
area who may try to place her, but I will probably have to pay for
her to be spayed. I've left a message on her answering machine.

Some people have also responded to my FOUND ads, but if it's not
their pet, then they aren't interested.

I won't give up on this sweetheart, but I don't know if I want to
come across another one. It isn't easy, is it Elaine?

The Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, Ma. is a no-kill
shelter, despite the implications of some that there is
no such thing. There are many older cats up for adoption
in this notes file so I think you're going to have
    trouble placing her.

1111.7Call your vet...ITSBIG::VACCARIThu Feb 18 1988 19:349
Pam, I was in a similar situation a few weeks ago... my next door
neighbors moved and left their cat. I called my vet (Twin City
Animal Hospital in Fitchburg) and they found a home for him after
I paid for him to be neutured.... You might want to call your vet
and see if they know of someone who might be willing to take the
cat, if you offer to have her spayed. Think of it as a charitable
    contribution to society....

Well Feliners, perseverance pays off! The woman Elaine Bosler
recommended turned out to be the Dog Officer in Douglas, MA -
Michelle Vaughn. What a nice person she is. She asked if I
would contribute (not necessary) towards having the cat spayed
and I said I would be willing to pay for the whole thing. Turns
out that she gets a discount from her vet - $30 for a spay, and
$25 for a neuter. Heck, I'll even throw in a couple of cans of
    cat food too.

Apparently, she IS having luck placing kittens as well as older
cats, where some shelters shy away from taking them. On the other
hand, she is having difficulty placing older dogs.

Let's hear it for Michelle - a NO KILL Dog Officer. If anyone is
looking for a pet, she asks that you give her a call. (617)476-2576

Happy for my Backdoor Friend, Pam
