1056.0. "SPCA HAS CFA GRAND CHAMPION" by MARRHQ::KORCHNAK () Fri Jan 22 1988 18:28

    I have a rare problem here that maybe you can help me with.

    I work at the SPCA in Annapolis, MD. An absolute jerk walked in
    with 2 pedigre cats. He's kept these cats in cages and brought them
    in.

    One is gone, but the other has been there 3 weeks. He is the CFA
    grand champion. He is a tan oriental short hair, about 2 yrs old.

    I don't know much about showing cats, but he is beautiful.

    If you know of anyone, or if you are interested in this cat, please
    call me at DTN 425-3205, or VAXmail MARRHQ::KORCHNAK.

    Since he is in Annapolis, I would have to adopt him ($40 for pedi-
    grees) and take himm to the vet within 72 hrs for a full checkup.

    I would take him myself, but I've already got a housefull!

    If anyone is interested, please let me know!

    Would it be worthwhile trying to contact a local breeder of whatever
    he is (what's an "oriental"?) to see if they would want him? I
    know the humane societies out here have contacts with local dog
    and cat societies and call them when purebread animals wind up at the
    shelter. Often the breeders associations (or whatever they are)
    can place the purebreds. Please keep us informed about what happens.

    (How did the jerk wind up with the cats?)

    An oriental shorthair is essentially a siamese type cat that commes
    in lots of different colors EXCEPT colorpoint colors. They can be
    solid, tabby, ticked (like abyssinians), etc.

    I happen to know of a C.F.A. club in that area that might be
    able/willing to help locate a breeder, or someone who would like
    to adopt this cat. I'll forward the name & address of a contact
    via VAXmail.
    Good luck!

    If this is a CFA Grand Champion (exactly what does that title mean)why
    did he bring them in to the Humane Society. Why didn't he put an
    ad in the paper? How do you know that this cat is a CFA Grand
    Champion? Is there proof? Are they really his to give away? This
    sounds confusing........

    Due to other commitments, I have been unable to 'volunteer' at the
    SPCA. However, another woman who works here is a volunteer and told
    me about the cat.

    Evidently this man said he 'found the cats'. He did have papers.
    They checked everything out and the papers are legit. (It's a tan
    oriental short hair). The man said the cats were 'too high strung'
    for him, and couldn't handle them. He had kept them in cages since
    he got them, cause they tore his house apart the first night he
    had them. (How LONG he had them, I don't know). The one cat found
    a home (not the CFA champion). The CFA champion, whose name is so
    long I couldn't pronounce, but they call him Glen for short, is
    still at the SPCA as of now.

    Since I am NOT an authority on pedigrees, I'm not quite sure what
    a CFA champion is, but I DO know enough that it is a good breed
    of cat.

    If anyone else could give Sandi (AND me!) and explanation of what
    a CFA champion means, I would love to know.

    I am imagining two scenarios here:

    1. The cats were stolen, and the papers as well.

    2. The creep bought the cats, didn't know anything about cats,
    realized he'd made a mistake and didn't have the guts to return
    the cats to the breeder.

    Either way, I think the breeder would want to know. Cat show people,
    I am assuming that if the actual names of the cats were known, the
    breeder could be traced? I hope he or she is a responsible person
    given that the cats might have wound up in the creep's hands thru scenario
    #2....

re: breeder name

Let me emphasize the previous response. I am a breeder. If people don't
like my cats, I expect them back. If one of my cats ended up at a shelter,
I'd want to know so I could do something about it.

If you have the papers, you have all the data. The papers have the
breeder's name and address right on them.

If you only have the complete name, you still have enough. For example,
one of my cats is named "Spielzeit Karlchen Braun of Fewsee". The first
name ("Spielzeit") is the cattery name of the breeder. You can call CFA,
and they'll tell you the breeder's name and address corresponding to the
cattery name.

*Please* call the breeder, and tell them what's happening. Even if they're
far away, they probably have friends in the area. If you need help
deciphering the papers or getting the information from CFA, call me.

    I have been reading the responses and want to express a couple
    thoughts I've had on the subject.

    First, we don't know the total situation of the man who brought the
    cats to the SPCA - we cannot be sure they were stolen, or yes-
    maybe the man bought the cats and then didn't/couldn't keep
    them. He could have done ALOT worse with them than bring them to
    a shelter. He could have opened the door to his house and pushed
    them out!!! Having worked with my local humane group - I have
    retrieved cats (and kittens) who were just abandoned on the street
    (in the middle of Route 9 in Framingham - for those not familiar
    with that area - it is a BUSY 4-lane highway). We have also retrieved
    cats from beaches, from parking lots, etc. Of course, it would have
    been ALOT better all around if he had brought them sooner and
    not kept them the way he did.

    Possibly, He may not have been familiar with the fact that a breeder
    will take his/her cats back.

    Also, the man could also have destroyed the papers and
    brought only the cat to the shelter. But he didn't destroy them,
    and he has allowed the new owner to get a valuable cat - or - perhaps
    he DID know the breeder would take it back but the man didn't want to
    spend the time calling (yes I know it takes only a few minutes) and
    suspected that the SPCA would do his work for him - and look at the
    response it has received. This cat will find a good home - the other
    one already has a new home.

    I would also think that this man will not get another cat. It sounds
    as if he has found out that cats - like any living creature - require
    love and attention.

    One more thought - if I had a litter of purebreds or just mongrel
    type kittens, yes, I would want the person who bought the cat/kitten
    to return it to me because I would want to assume responsiblity
    for it. However, if the person moves from the area, or for one reason
    or another - including ignorance - does not inform me that he doesn't
    want the animal any longer, I would perfer that he take it to a shelter.
    At least that way, the animal isn't in danger of getting maimed
    or killed on the street from objects, animals or other people.

1056.9other reasonsINK::KALLISJust everybody please calm down...Tue Jan 26 1988 16:499
    There are two explanations offered on why the man brought the cats to the
    shelter: 1) stolen, and 2) didn't_want_to/couldn't keep them after
    buying them.  There are other possible scenarios: 3) inherited the cats;
    4) was looking after them for a friend, who couldn't return [death,
    injury, deportation, imprisonment, etc.]; and 5) won them in a raffle.

    What's important is that the cat is healthy and available.

    tracked down, or a local breeder found?

1056.11DISSRV::GERRYGo ahead, make me PURRR...Tue Jan 26 1988 18:037
    Of course, there's always the possibility that the breeder didn't
    want or wouldn't take them back.

    Unfortunately, not all breeders are alike.

    I'm going to try to find out tonite the status of 'Glen', and the
    information that some of you have asked for.

    I'll let you know!

1056.13Information on GlenMARRHQ::KORCHNAKWed Jan 27 1988 13:2220
    This is the information that I got this morning. (BTW: there was
    no address on the cats' papers)

    NAME OF CAT: Printers Glengarriff of Catspaw
    SIRE:        Printers Crimson Pennant
    DAM: Sand n Sea Bankshot of Tagatia
    BREEDER: Pat Glass - Ann Sumrall

    Also, this man that had the cats just moved here from Colorado.
    That's where 'supposedly' the man acquired these cats.

    Also, the SPCA still has 'Glen' and he's adjusting better since
    his 'friend' got adopted.

    Also, they just got a Chocolate Snowshoe cat. Does anyone know about
    this breed? He does not have papers, but is a GORGEOUS cat.

    CFA. Will report back when I have information.

1056.16Glengarriff is OKAY!GLINKA::GREENEWed Jan 27 1988 13:5223
    Good news!

    The breeders are aware that the cat is there, and a good home
    WILL be found for him...according to Ann Sumral (or Summerall?).
    She said that the SPCA had placed an ad, and there were many
    requests, but they had to neuter him first. She will take him
    back if no other home is found.

    BTW, it turns out the cat is a Champion, not a Grand Champion
    (getting a championship sounds a bit more impressive that it
    really is...but a GRAND championship is indeed grand!).
    He is about 2 and 1/2 years old, and the man did indeed recently
    return from Colorado with the cats.

    It wasn't at all clear to me what was going on such that the cat
    was brought to the SPCA rather than placed privately, although
    Ann said the SPCA is a very special place that one can even
    board cats!

    Bottom line: cat *not* in danger of no home or worse.

    Lucky Cats!!!

    In conversations with Eline Bosler (of Bosler Humane Society, a
    No Kill shelter in Bare MA) she tells me many people through away

           Nice of the fellow to leave the papers, seems like he wanted
    his kitties to live.

1056.20help -- Glen still needs a homeCIRCUS::KOLLINGKaren, Sweetie, Holly; in Calif.Mon Feb 01 1988 18:018
    Glen still needs a home. Penelope and I had a conversation by mail
    off-line, because she was a little concerned about the "vibes" she
    had gotten during her conversation with the breeder. I haven't
    been able to reach Cheryl, so I called the SPCA directly. They
    told me that they had paid to have Glen neutered, but he does NOT
    have anyone waiting to adopt him, and he does still need a home.
    Can someone help?

1056.21Glen is still waiting...MARRHQ::KORCHNAKWed Feb 10 1988 18:4912
    Just to let all of you know of the status of Glen -- he is still
    in need of a home. I tend to think this breeder doesn't care about
    this misfortunate cat because he's no longer a 'stud'. And I HATE
    to think of this poor misfortunate cat without a home! The SPCA
    does NOT have a list of people wanting the cat -- they DO have people
    coming in, but since I've worked there, people are mostly looking
    for young cats (kitten to about 1 year) or persians. Does anyone
    know of anyone in the DC area who would REALLY LOVE a cat? Or, does
    anyone know if this breeder is for real???

    Cheryl

1056.22Glen's breeder IS for real, but...?GLINKA::GREENEWed Feb 10 1988 19:0311
    Sounds like something is fishy with the breeder and/or former
    owner of Glen! The breeder IS for real. I tracked her down
    through CFA, and she was who she was supposed to be when I
    called her. She knew about Glen and she knew about his former
    owner. As I said at the time, she *did* sound weird [but aren't
    all Cat_Ladies weird??? ;-) ], but she assured me that Glen's
    situation was under control and there were would-be owners.

    Guess I was too trusting that she would REALLY care about a
    cat she had bred...sad.

1056.24All is fine!MARRHQ::KORCHNAKTue Oct 18 1988 12:589
    Yes, yes! Both of them got homes with people who are, what you would
    call "significant" donators to the SPCA. (Significant, to the point
    that they donate $200+). So the Oriental Shorthair AND the Snowshoe
    are living a life of luxury!

    I LOVE happy endings! I just wish that people were a little better
    educated on pet care!
