1030.0. "Does your cat sit with hind legs extended?" by VAXWRK::SKALTSIS (Deb) Mon Jan 11 1988 18:11

I've had cats all of my life, but about 5 years ago when I got Pip
I noticed that she would sit with her back legs fully extended on
the floor. I'd never seen a cat do that before, and the only other
time I've seen it since was a picture in a cat magazine. Until last
night that is. Last night the newest member of the family, Nikolas,
came into the living room and sat down with his hind legs extended
    just like Pip does!!!

Which brings me to the several questions that I am about to pose:

    	1. Does anyone else have a cat that sits this way?
    	2. Are these cats "double jointed"?
    	3. Is this ability genetic or breed related? (someone told me
that this was common among tabbies, but neither of these cats
are tabbies, and besides, tabby is a marking, not a breed).

My dog lays that way but my cats never did. They just like to look
    the the Sphynx.

from the front they look like the Great Sphinx; the back legs are
out straight in back of him.

Skyler Van Grayson does this...but he usually adds the front arm
extension...we called it his "Superman" pose. All he needed was
a cape, and we were sure he could fly. Very aerodynamic kitties!

My Tyler used to lie like this. Joshie does it, but it's only
an accidental side effect of a log roll.

Yes, they do look a sphinx -- Midnight does this often -- don't know
why -- just stretches out on the floor -- it looks so uncomfortable.

Fire does it too, and he's red tabby, but he also has at least one
son and one daughter that also sits like this....both of them are
solid colors, one red and one blue.

hmmm, this gives me an idea for a new note.

My Woofie did this once on the couch while sleeping. We laid
a tape measure next to him and took a bunch of pictures. It
reminds me of the pictures people take with their prize catch
    	of fish!

(Woofie was over three feet long!)

I still can't picture a cat SITTING with it's back legs backwards.
My Sammie often lays like that though and Dillan more often than
not can be found on the couch, lying over the side of the arm with
both front legs out-stretched just like "Superman".
