954.0. "I need help naming cat # 6 !" by VAXWRK::SKALTSIS (Deb) Thu Dec 10 1987 18:19

In the past few weeks I learned that the big, beautiful, long-haired
Tom that was hanging around my house all summer is a stray (possibly
even a feral cat). All black except for a few hairs under his chin.

Using Donna Dudley's patented method, I gradually made friends with
the big guy by feeding him, tempted him into the house and shut
the door behind him. I got him into the house Sunday afternoon,
and have isolated him in an upstairs room ever since. He's seems
to like the warmth and the regular meals. He is using the box and
hasn't even sprayed! Now that he has cleaned himself up you can
see he is a real handsome devil (with one really beat up ear).

But there is just one little problem; I haven't got a name this
guy, and tonight he is going in to the vet for a checkup (and next
week he'll be groomed and fixed). So, fellow feliners, you've got
to help me! A nice cat like this can't go through life with a question
mark for a name, so I decided to ask for your help. The name I am
looking for has to be a regular Greek first name, and I'd prefer it be
a regular name rather than one of the ancients. So far, I've tried
Nikolas (Nik, Niko), Spiro, George, Petros, Pablos, and Kostos. Kostos
seems to fit, but I'm not sure. So, how about about it? Cast your
vote or suggest a different name! Our appointment is at 6:30.

"Eblis" is one, if he's impish.

If he's not dignified, a name like "Shadow" or even "Blackie" might
    not be out of order.

If he has dignity, then something like "Blackstone" might work.

_My_ Manx blackie is named Merlin.

I've always liked the name Nikolas.... sounds regal and dignified,
a sure fit if he's big and black. And you could always call him
    Niko for short....

    thats my vote! Good luck...

    Erin

p.s. I think its terrific you took him in!!!!! I wish more people
would be as kind and generous to animals.... all they ask for is
a little love and kindness... have fun with your new addition!

I have a black cat at home. I had a few names picked out for her.

    Spooky
    lucky
    blackie (original, eh? :-))

You could also call him sebastian. I have always liked that name
    for a cat.

    good luck,

Slight change of plans here since he wouldn't let the vet shave
him for his lukemia test. Other than a couple of cat fight wounds,
and bad ear mites which turned one ear into a califlower ear, he is
healthy and isn't running a fever or anything He weighs 15
lbs). He is getting "fixed", etc. tommorrow while he is under. That
is also when he is getting his lukemia test. I'm just praying that his
    lukemia test comes back negitive.

    Deb

P.S. The poll is still open.

    Yeah, or "Iron Mike"...

Or Boxer? (Could lead to some confusion at the vet's, though!)

Jaspers was done with a simple blood sample...

When my cats have blood taken, the vet shaves a tiny area on the
    leg to do it.

My little guys sometimes have to have a patch shaved on the arm
or on the neck for blood tests. This only needs to be done if they
are haveing problems finding the vein. Your question did start
me giggling, though. The very thought of a fully shaved cat struck
me funny. OH! The indignity of it all!

    Re: .11
The area that's shaved is so tiny that you might very well not have
noticed it, especially if it was on the leg and your puss has medium
    or long hair.

sorry I wasn't clear; th vet just wanted to shave a little patch
on the arm for the blood test (the yet-to-be-named-kitty has very
long black hair so the vet couldn't easily see a vein. And now for
the good news; His ELIZA test came back NEGITIVE!!!!!!! And, he
came through surgery well (he is all fixed). However, since they
knocked him out to do the fixing, they want him to stay overnight.I
guess that is probably for the best since that means that the vet
will get scratched cleaning out his ear mites and giveing him some
antibiotic pills for some of his "war wounds"

consider that a kitty walks on it's toes and fingers, not it's hands

Sounds good to me ! I asked my all, very black 4-year old Nikolas
if he minded, and he thought it was a GREAT NAME! We call him
Nikki-for-short! Gee, Deb, only "6" - Niko sounds really beautiful.
Good luck with your new large baby!

Thanks. The more I think about it, the more I realize that Nikolas
was the name that was ment for him (after all, he did finally walk
into the house on the feastday of St. Nikolas). Interestingly enough, he
seems to be getting along real well with cat # 5, Alexandra. I sure
hope that people realize that this Nikolas and Alexandra are Greek, not
    Russian!

Funny, I have an all black Alxexander - Alex came right after I
brought Nikki home - Nikki raised Alex - they are real buddies!
Right you are - Greek before Russian! My third all black male
is Timothy - for a short while I have 2 brown girls and 3 black
boys! Boy, that didn't last too long....it's so much fun having
all of these different colored kitties - stripes, spots, etc.
For such a long time all I had were Siamese. Hope your baby
    is doing well.

It is just that their human is a purebreed Greek, and is worried
that when people hear the names Nikolas and Alexandra togeather,
they will think Russian rather than notice the Greek naming theme
    I used.

954.26Half Russian/Half AustrianTOPDOC::TRACHMANMon Dec 21 1987 15:2811
I started going the Russian route because of the book
Nikolas and Alexandra - I already had Sasha and KoKo -
the two black boys were next, hence the logical thing
to do ..... the ZhivagoCat thing started when I saw a
rerun of the movie, reread the book, and that was the
end of that. Yurii came in after Timothy, and so on,
and so on, and so on........ my being half Russian
    helped a little I guess!!

954.27In case anyone is wondering what Niky looks like ..VAXWRK::SKALTSISDebFri Feb 26 1988 18:276
Maybellene (sp ?) has a TV ad with a very interesting looking black
cat (with fluorescent green eyes). That cat looks exactly like my
Niky except that Niky has bright yellow eyes, and his beautiful
bushy tail makes the TV cats look wimpy.
