944.0. "Anger after spaying" by INDEBT::TAUBENFELD (Almighty SET) Mon Dec 07 1987 11:45

I took Ishtar in to the vets to get spayed Thursday morning. Thursday
night I came home and Mielikki was upset, I assumed because Ishtar
wasn't around. Though Mielikki tends to be aloof around Ishtar,
I thought that finally she was showing her true feelings.

Friday night I brought Ishtar home and figured Mielikki would be
happy again. To my surprise, Mielikki started hissing at Ishtar,
working herself into such a frenzy that she was choking on her own
spit. Ishtar didn't know what was going on, she was happy to see
Mielikki and to be home. By Sunday, Mielikki was more or less back
to normal, with an occasional spit when Ishtar cuddled with her.

Why did Mielikki react this way? Could she have forgotten in one
day's time that Ishtar was in the family? Did she think that maybe
Ishtar was gone for good and she had me all to herself again? Did
the smell of the operation (I assume the anethesia and blood smells)
bring back memories of her operation, therefore causing panic? Or
did the smell of the operation make Ishtar seem like a 'sick cat'
therefore shunned by Mielikki? Has anyone else had this experience?

Yup. Don't worry about it. Ishtar has brought home many new smells and has
confused Mielikki.

A few days and everything will be back to normal.

    Hi Sharon.

I had the same experience. Sebastion hissed and wouldn't go NEAR
Claude when she came home after being spayed. It only lasted a
day if I remember correctly. I attributed it to the smell of the
vets office (which Sebastion HATES) including smells of other animals
and people. She just didn't smell like Claude!

    Amy.

Sharon, this is perfectly normal. In addition to smells, a cat
recovering from an operation often acts differently. A well cat
may try to drive away a sick one (though not all do); for the healthy
    oners, it's a survival mechanism.

Not to worry; things will return to normal quickly.

Yup, doesn't even have to be an operation. Just the new smells
from the vet's office will do it. That's why I try to take my guys
in for shots together. (Short pause to meditate on what is more
thrilling -- catching each cat on a separate day or catching two on one
    day.)
