932.0. "Mom spends big bucks, and gets a forest" by CIRCUS::KOLLING (Karen, Sweetie, Holly; in Calif.) Tue Dec 01 1987 19:56

    A few days ago I finally got a dining room table. I expected it
    to be decorated with cats in short order -- centerpieces and so
    forth. Surprise -- because it is normally against one wall of the
    dining room and has its chairs "pushed in" so that there are a lot
    of legs in a small area, it is apparently considered a forest.
    The carpet is a rug. Now pusses snooze under chairs, in the dark
    of the forest, and lie (lay?) in wait for an unsuspecting life form
    to wander too close.

    "The carpet is a rug". Right. grass, I meant grass.

932.2we purchase on approval! (by our cats!)BAGELS::ALLENWed Dec 02 1987 15:0330

    Our cat Sebastion "OWNS" our dining room table! It is an elegant
    teak table that sits in the dining room (where else?) under the
    fan that is in the apex of the cathedral ceiling. It's location
    allows him a perfect view of the living room, front door, and is
    also smack dab in the best spot for enjoying music from the stereo
    speakers in the living room.

    I think he found this neat spot during the summer on hot days when he
    would lie there enjoying the breeze from the ceiling fan directed down
    at full speed. He can also lay there with his head high surveying his
    kingdom, and blinking his eyes contentedly.

    The only problem is that the table was a gift from my husband's
    parents, who are NOT cat people, and don't understand that our
    furniture is purchased for cats (we merely find it handy on occasion).
    Consequently, when they come to visit I have to have a long talk with
    Sebastion about how he wouldn't have the table if it weren't for them,
    so he must humor them. Then, if he does happen to jump up on the table
    (just for kicks) when they are there, I instanly chase him off, with
    mock chastising. Since I am so embarrased and astonished by his
    actions, I say to my parents-in-law, "I don't know what got into him,
    he NEVER does that!"

    Of course, if we should serve dinner in the dining room, I must
    carefully dust off the cat hair, but then, we ARE only borrowing it!

    ;-)

932.3correcting mistakes in notes and repliesHUMOR::EPPESMake 'em laughWed Dec 02 1987 18:5417
    RE .0 and .1 -- Nothing to do with cats, but a Helpful Noting Hint:

    If, right after you enter a note or a reply, you notice you've made
    a mistake, you can delete that note or reply (and answer "Y" when Notes
    asks whether you really mean it), then use the WRITE/LAST or REPLY/LAST
    command. That command invokes your editor and places the text of the
    note or reply you just deleted in its buffer, where you can correct it
    as you like. This eliminates the "oops" replies, which results in more
    readable notes and less cluttered conferences.

    This only works, however, if you haven't entered another note or reply
    between the time you entered the one with the mistake and the time you
    notice the mistake -- with WRITE/LAST or REPLY/LAST, you get your most
    recent topic or reply. But it certainly is handy if you notice a
    mistake right away (and no one else has had a chance to reply yet!).

    RE .-1...thanks, Nina! I didn't know that....amazing what you can
    learn, even if you don't read the manuals (isn't that what the
    developers are here for  ;^)!).

    I also have a Great Teak Forest. I do try to keep them off the
    table, as that's the only thing in the house that's off limits,
    but the forest is a favorite hunting and stalking place. My dining
    room chairs are upholstered, so before I can have anyone over to
    eat, I have to spend an entire day vacuuming up all the cat hair
    from the chairs. One of the funniest things I have ever seen was
    when an old boyfriend had sat in one of the chairs in his black
    Navy uniform. He got up and his entire back side was covered with
    cat hair. I just couldn't stop laughing. He, however, couldn't
    see he humor. So much for him! No wonder Honey never liked him...

932.5What? A pussycat in your plate?CIRCUS::KOLLINGKaren, Sweetie, Holly; in Calif.Thu Dec 03 1987 16:114
    What I'd like to know is, how to you set the table when you have
    friends over? I have visions of all the place settings stacked
    in a cupboard, and whisked out to the table just as the doorbell
    rings.
932.6He signed on the dotted line!BAGELS::ALLENFri Dec 04 1987 11:077

    Well, that's what we work out a loan agreement for. Once I have the
    table set, He KNOWS he's not allowed up there. Especially if we're
    eating! It's in the contract... I feed him, and he lets me borrow his
    furniture when I need it. Very simple. ;-)

932.7battle of wills over table top30752::WILDEImagine all the people..Wed Jan 13 1988 18:5212
My well meaning, but misinformed room-mate has decided my dining room table
needs a centerpiece...whereas my cat, Hannah, is certain that the dining room
table, exactly in the center, is HER spot and has been her spot since she
arrived.

There is a battle of wills going on (I know Hannah will win because the
centerpiece is looking ratty from all the dumps on the floor) and I'm
really enjoying watching Hannah train one of her humans to behave in
a rational manner....

It's not like she is unfair...we can use the table for dinners occasionally
as long as we leave it to her the rest of the time.
932.8If you can't win it, glue it!HLIS07::VISSERSN..N..NOTorious!Wed Jan 13 1988 19:2311
    I had somewhat the same problem with a plant pot I wanted to stay
    in the place Omar decided he wanted to sleep on. Since the plant
    pot was first, I took my right to cheat....

    Double-sided gummed tape ! :-)

    BTW: Omar likes it better also after all. The plant pot is now a
    comfortable resting point...

    	My cat Woofie likes to curl up on a placemat for a nap. The
    	sun shines in perfectly in the late afternoon so its nice and
    	warm for a snooze!
