925.0. "Meals on Wheels!" by TOPDOC::TRACHMAN () Tue Dec 01 1987 12:32

    A word a cheer for today - saw this a while back in the newspaper
    and thought it was cute!

    These two little mice appeared in heaven and St. Peter asked
    them how they were getting along. They replied, "Fine, but
    heaven is so big and we are having a hard time getting
    around." So, St. Peter gave them each a pair of roller skates.
    The next day some cats appeared in heaven and St. Peter asked
    them how they were getting along. They replied, "We just love
    the meals on wheels you have here!"

                                         meow

    I always thought that was a quote from MY favorite cat-cartoonist,
    B. Kliban! I believe he originated it in his book CAT (a must for
    all cat lovers in my opinion).

    Personally, I think Kliban does a better job at depicting cats and
    capturing their true nature. (You can tell I'm not really a Garfield
    fan :-) -oh well...)

925.3Love to buy them t-shirts!CLUSTA::TAMIRTo a cat, all things belong to catsTue Dec 01 1987 18:2715
    I'm also a B. Kliban fan. I think Noko Marie is better than Garfield
    ANY day!! It was an original Kliban, and this cartoon found fame
    and fortune on a t-shirt produced by a company in Hawaii called
    Crazy Shirts. They have an exclusive on t-shirts for B. Kliban,
    and have over the years produced a large number of Kliban-cat shirts.
    I collect them, and now have over a dozen different shirts. But!
    Due to popular demand! The original "love to eat them mousies"
    shirt is coming back this winter! That's one I don't have but I
    plan to get one (or maybe 2 or 3...). Another favorite is a shirt
    depicting 3 rocking cats (one on guitar, one on drums, one on sax)
    and the caption reads "Sex, Mice and Rock 'n Roll!".

    Did we (me!) somehow get off the original note topic??

925.4Aren't we talking about funnies?BAGELS::ALLENTue Dec 01 1987 19:2019

    Hi Mary,

    No, I don't THINK we got off the topic, it was about jokes, and
    cartoons fit right in! Do you have the book CAT by Kliban? He
    is SO clever, and his cat expressions and faces are PURRFECT! Let
    me know when you find a "mousie" T-shirt, because I'd love one too.
    I have the pillowcases with the cat with tennis shoes on.

    I am always referring back to that book when my cats remind me of it...
    somtimes it's because I didn't quite "get it" when I first read it, and
    all of a sudden they'll do something, and I'll say, "Hey! that's right
    of of a Kliban cartoon! so THAT'S what he meant!"

    Mostly it's when they use his "cat vocabulary" The only one I haven't
    heard is wacka wacka!  (YET!)

925.5Garfield and rodentsTOKLAS::FELDMANPDS, our next successTue Dec 01 1987 19:3811
    For the record:

    Garfield likes mice -- as friends. He's afraid to try to kill them,
    since they can gang up on him. Sometimes he'll try to play jokes
    on them, or vice versa, though Garfield's usual target is the dumb
    dog, Odie.

    Garfield's favorite meal, of course, is lasagna accompanied by strong
    coffee.

    RE: Wacka wacka, Mary, the book says this is not widely used. Maybe
    they have said it when you are not around :-)

    I have the Eat them mousies mug, but I could still use a T-shirt,
    or 2 or 3 or... I also have the Supercat mug.

    A friend gave me a stuffed Kliben cat which we named Quat (I think
    from the book), then we found another one later and named her Quatina.

925.9Favorite KlibanBUFFER::HOFFMANJoan Hoffman, DTN: 276-9829Wed Dec 02 1987 14:4614
My favorite Kliban t-shirt is the one depicting the two cats, sitting on a
backyard fence, looking at the moon, and the fatter (male) cat is saying
to the female, "If I had two dead rats, I'd give you one".

From Kliban's book, CAT, I love the cartoon picturing the Trojan "bird",
with the saying, "Happy Birthday to you".

Garfield is a little too distainful for me, but I love Heathcliffe!

J.

925.10More cartoon catsVIDEO::TEBAYNatural phenomena invented to orderWed Dec 02 1987 16:0215
    As with real ones I never meet a cartoon cat I didn't like.

    Anyone familar with "BONKERS" and "KING RAT"?

    Bonkers lives with a family of mice in a gas station (he really
    runs the place).

    King Rat was a British strip which caused a lot of flack I understand.

    I only found both of these in paperback book collections.

    Kliban cats are much more well cat-like. Garfield is all too human
    but I like him.

925.11Will I ever learn??? (NO!)CLUSTA::TAMIRTo a cat, all things belong to catsThu Dec 03 1987 13:229
    Oh, God, what have I done??? I've created another monster! Since
    I will be near a Crazy Shirt shop next week, I will check on the
    status of the mousie's shirts. I also love the dead rat shirt,
    but I think that's "out of print". They come out with 2 or 3 new
    shirts every year...and I keep getting them!

    I'll post another note when I get a status report...
