862.0. "more litterbox problems" by DAMSEL::TAYLOR (Certified Chocoholic) Thu Oct 29 1987 11:54

    We are having a problem with our new kitten, Tabbatha. She only
    seems to go in the litter box when she is in the kitchen area.
    If she is too far away, she chooses to go on the rug underneith
    the Dining room. My mother is getting pretty sick of it and needless
    to say, the dining room doesn't exactly smell like some place where
    you would like to eat.

    We have tried scolding her and water pistol but nothing seem to
    work. We also praise her CONSIDERABLY when she does go in the litter
    box.

    I have read the other notes in this file, but nothing in there seems
    like something I could do. I really can't feed her under the Dining
    room table and I certainly am not going to put her litterbox under
    there! What else is there that I can do? My mother and I are
    beginning to loose hope!

    Please Help!

862.1I can relateWELKIN::STRONACHThu Oct 29 1987 12:4219
Hi Holly

  I can sure relate to this -- one of our new kittens has chosen to go
behind the livingroom couch when you either is too lazy or waits too long
to travel downstairs -- and my husband cleans it up -- I also tried all
the tricks you did -- now what we do is about 1/2 hr after they eat, I
pick them and take them down to their box -- I also stopped leaving any
food down for any of the cats(I can tell you the older cats don't like
this) -- the other thing I've noticed is that the food I've been giving
them seems to give only Boo Boo problems -- very runny -- so today I'm
going over to Acton to get CD food for them.

  We've decided also that because Bow Bow doesn't cover his packages in the
litter box and she scratches to China -- that we think she doesn't like
him sharing her box and again today I'm picking up another box just for her.

 Hopefully this is only a stage and they'll outgrow it --

862.2SD coming this weekendDAMSEL::TAYLORCertified ChocoholicThu Oct 29 1987 12:5612
    Thanks. Tabbatha also is having a problem with her "droppings"
    being very runny (a lot harder to pick up too I might add). At
    the present time, I am feeding her Friskie's buffet, but I am going
    to go this weekend and get her some SD.

    We may have the problem of the kittens not wanting to share the
    same litterbox in a few weeks when we get Sterling silver. Tabbatha
    sometimes covers her messes, sometimes not.

    Keep the responses coming. They are GREATLY appreciated!

862.3temporary extra litter boxGEMVAX::GRANTThu Oct 29 1987 15:0513
    If Tabatha's stools are runny, and she is a young kitten, maybe
    she _can't_ wait to get to the box. Kittens, like young children,
    don't have the same control as adults. Why not put a temporary box
    in the Dining Room, just 'till she gets a little bigger? It may
    be an eyesore during the time it's there, but it certainly can't
    be any worse than accidents on the rug!

    When our cats were little, we put extra litter boxes around the
    house for them. Once they got a little bit bigger, the boxes were
    delegated to one room.

    Thanks Marleen. OF COURSE! I never even thought of the idea that
    she is too little to have control over her bowels. A new litterbox
    is being put in the diningroom tonight. We'll see what happens.

    Thanks.
