818.0. "Waiting to be evicted...." by MYVAX::LUBY () Wed Oct 07 1987 17:13

    	Hi,

I am currently renting an apartment that has a very strict
NO PETS rule. If you get caught with a pet you must get
rid of it or be evicted. So, needless to say, I am walking
on thin ice with my kitten, T.K. But since I am moving out
on November 3rd I'm not too worried about getting caught.

T.K. on the other hand is doing everything possible to get
me in trouble. He doesn't seem to realize that if he gets
caught by the landlord he is going to have to go visit
Auntie Lauren until I move. He has learned to yowl and
does this very well. He also likes the window sills so I had
to put up screening to keep him off of them. And the day
that we had plumbing problems I had to stay home from
work and wait for the plumber, who works for the landlord,
so that I could hide T.K. in my room. God was that awful,
he started crying so I cranked the radio to drown him out
while the plumber was in the apartment.

But his latest antic is a riot. My roomate noticed the
other night that if T.K. hears someone in the hall he
goes to the door and pokes his paws under it. Can you
imagine what the landlord would do if he came walking
down the hall and saw two furry grey paws coming towards
him!! The other night, getting home, I deliberately made
alot of noise and waited. Sure enough, out came the paws.
It was soooo funny. (Maybe you had to be there). I can't
imagine what he thinks he is doing when he sticks his
paws out. Is he trying to say "Help!! Rescue me!!" Or
is he saying "Ah-ha, now this will get Mommy in lots of
trouble". Or is he saying "Somebody come play with me...."

Either way it really is rather cute.

Hi - sure hope you don't get caught. Landlords can be gruesome.
Where I live if they catch you with an animal that isn't declared
and has a pet deposit on it, they charge you 20.00 per day until
you put up your deposit. Could cost lots of money. I'm hiding
Corkie too. I'm moving at the end of the month so I'm walking on
thin ice too. I've been there six months and have been lucky enough
to avoid the pet deposit. Corkie never hurts anything and I sure
didn't have the 250 they wanted.

If I put Corkie in a room by herself and shut the door, she reaches
out under it and all you can see are little furry feets. She doesn't
like to be closed out - wants to know always what's going on and
    she's saying "let me out".

Sherlock does the same thing! He's definitely saying "Hey, how
come this door is closed? I want to know what's happening!"

I'll keep my fingers crossed that neither T.K. nor Corkie get caught.

I rent a house down here that has pseudo strict pet regulations.
(one dog, one cat). Of course I own 8 cats. The property is managed
by a real estate firm, and they are quite nice (and distant). The
    owner lives in Mexico city.

well, about 4 weeks ago, The manager called and said that the owner
would like to stop by and see the house. I naturally said fine,
and made arrangements to stay home. He said theyed be by around
11am-noon, but don't be concerned if they didn't show up, as she
usually decided not to actually go see any of her properties while
    she was in town.

So here I am, nervous, with cat carriers all lined up, keeping track
of six cats (two are allowed out during the day). 11Am, 12N, 1PM
    ...
I relax, draw a deep breath, and start doing something. 35 minutes
later, they pull up outside my house. PANIC!!

I grab 4 cats, stuff them into three carriers and head out the back
door. Both indoor cats rush in. Set carriers down, scoop outside
cats up and evict them. Hear people coming through gate to the
back yard. Grab carriers and cut around the side of the house and
scale 6 foot fence. Owner has reversed her direction and is heading
into front yard. Back over fence and into car with carriers. Go
for a short drive with 4 yowling cats. (of course the two that don't
get along are in the same carrier). Finally spot the car leaving
    and head home.

I managed to get away with it, but I feel I earned my cat privilidges
    that day.

My Malcom does the paw under the door ALL the time. I'm convinced
that she does this as a form of playing. And of course either I
or my husband have to grab those cute little white mitts.... I'm
convinced it's playing because besides under the door she goes in
back of the open door stands up and sticks her whole arm out and
waves it out. It is quite a sight. Fortunately our landlord asked
for a $100 pet deposit. We now have three cats but he never specified
    how many..........

To Reply .3- All I can say is that I would have LOVED to have
been there to watch your escape technique Dave. I couldn't help
smirking to myself reading your message and picturing it in my
mind. Hope they don't come visiting again for your sake......

    	Re : .3

Thanks for the laugh Dave. I wish I could have seen it too.

One question though. You said that you have 8 cats. Well,
two were outside, right. And four were in your car. Where
the heck were the other two?? Of course I'll bet it looked
a bit suspicious to the owner to find two cats sitting outside
your door waiting to be let in. And you must have had a field
day hiding the toys, kitty litters, cat dishes and other
"evidence". What a riot!! You sure have guts. The only reason
I got T.K. is that I knew that I was moving and I knew that
I could leave him with a friend if he got caught. Otherwise
I would have gotten a kitten much sooner.

Well, have fun with your menagerie.

Oh, I think I just answered my own question about the two missing
cats. The landlord allows you to have one cat and one dog so
you left two cats hoping that the landlord would think that
one of them was a dog, right??

    	:-)

    	Karen

P.S. I had fun with this note!!
818.7Oh My God!! It's The LandlordBAUCIS::WOODSThu Oct 08 1987 17:5116
I understand the panic of hiding your pet from the landlord.

I've had my cat for 4 years now and for the first year anytime
the landlord came around I would run around to hide toys, litter
box, etc. but I would forget that my cat is very curious. Here
I would be killing myself to hide everything and she would be standing
in the door looking at him (the landlord) so much for keeping her
a secret. But I lucked out he never said anything about her excpet
that she was very pretty and friendly (whew what a relief).

She also stick's her paw's underneath the door's. It is sometimes
as game but I think she's trying to get the door open. If this
does not work she starts to work on lifting the latch (I don't
have door handles very old building).

My cats do this paws underneath the door too. I had assumed that
they emporarily forgot there was a whole room on the otherside,
    and were fishing for mice.

    re : two cats.

    One, cause she's allowed.

the other cause she can disappear better than any other cat I've
seen (and not come out for days

She immediately hides when the front door is opened.

While browsing thru the classified ads last night, I counted up
rental ads: 4 said pets ok (one said "Cats welcome!"), 10 didn't
specify, 5 said no pets. Things seem to be looking up; a few years
ago all the ads seemed to say no pets.

818.12Deposits don't work with unreasonable neighborsEDWIN::BURLEWPurr is my favorite sound!Thu Oct 08 1987 18:5015
I just remembered something that happened to Tom and I when we were
first married. We had two cats, Salt and Pepper, and lived in an
apartment complex that had special buildings for people with pets.
We had to make a "pet deposit" in order to have the cats. Well,
believe it or not, we were evicted six months later because the
man in the apartment beneath us complained that our cats were stomping
on the floor all night long and keeping him awake! Of course, his
dog howling at all hours and his teenage son playing the electric
guitar from 6 am to midnight didn't bother him.

    So, we had to move.

Hope T.K. and Corkie's folks make out better than we did.

We rented a house with a "no pets" rule for a while. Of course
we had 10 cats. (We started out 3, but two were pregnant females.)

The landlady was 75 years old, a Latvian woman with flame red hair.
She would sho up like clockwork every weekend, and say, (in her
marvelous Latvian accent) "Kets are nut allowed!"

She would then go out to the garage and feed the kitties the can
    of tuna she'd brought them :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

The kitties loved her for it. She eventually took one of the kittens
home to her Cambridge condo, where "Kets vere also nut allowed"!

From my experience, I don't think there's a *real* problem, as an
entirely indoor pet is considered under the law as *personal property*.
*Before* there's a problem, tho', I'd suggest you contact your local
police Animal Control Officer, SPCA, Humane Society, or the like,
as there's most certainly someone in one of those organizations
who can come to your support, as I don't think the landlord has
a legal leg to stand on . . . but he/she could make your life at
home unpleasant, which is the worst he/she could do.

Another tactic if he/she does hassle you, and nothing else seems
to work, the threat of a letter to the editor has been known to
    work.
818.16T.K. escapes Mom!MYVAX::LUBYMon Oct 12 1987 11:5619

Three weeks till moving day!!! I think I can keep T.K. hidden
till then ..... if he doesn't keep doing what he did this
weekend. Three times he escaped the apartment. I had the
door open to let in a friend when T.K. ran out of the apartment
as fast as he could and started down the hallway. My friend
was still on his way down the hallway when I went running the
other direction in pursuit of T.K. who I caught at the other
end of the hall. Well I brought him back into the apartment
but before I could close the door he was out again. And so
I ran after him again. This time he made it up to the second
floor. Thank God I managed to catch him with out two much
comotion. None of the residents saw us at any rate. Now,
when I move, this escape thing of his could be a problem since
the front door opens to the outside. We are going to have to
    	be much more careful.

Ohhhh, that must have been a sight to see those precious little
pawlees under the door (well, not if your landlord was standing
    there with you!).

I too am harboring a kitty. When I am ready to go out the door
or when I am coming in Asia wants to see what is out there that
keeps mom gone for 10 hours a day. I have to drop everything and bring
her back inside. She doesn't understand that the hall is not part
of my apt mostly because it is warm out there too.

Somethings late, late at night (on the w/e's) I will take her for
a walk to see what it is really like. Talk about wide eyelees!
