795.0. "Catching WASPS ??" by HLIS07::VISSERS (N..N..NOTorious!) Sat Sep 26 1987 18:42

    Hi,

While I'm at it now I think it might be worth writing a note about
something that has been "bugging" me for some time.

My little Chanel is from day 1 my appartment debugger. She'll catch
anything that flies lower than 1.20m or is as stupid as to sit down
somewhere in Kittie-range (which is astounding). I love her to keep
my appartment free of flies, gnats and other insects, but I noticed
she also is particularly interested in wasps and bees. I try to
keep these out, catch them before she does, but I'm worried about
what might happen when I'm not at home or something. I am really
afraid someday she'll catch one, tries to swallow it and get stinged
    in her mouth or throat.

So, during summer I keep all windows etc. tightly shut when I'm
out, probably the only solution. Wasps visiting is rare, but with
her 100% catch-ratings the first one will do the trick.

Don't tell me her instinct will stop her, I've seen it doesn't.
Either, don't tell me to wear my yellow/black striped shirt and
bully her, when someone is able to bully that little thing he sure
    isn't HUMAN! ;-)

I got the advice to let her "have" one long enough to find out that
it's dangerous, but that sounds too dangerous for me.

    (BTW Chanel is a 14 month, indoor-only "stays-kitten")

    Suggestions/reassurances/assurances?

How about screens (securely fastened) for the windows in the
summer? My guys like to sit on the window sills and have the
    best of both worlds.

795.2Screens are wonderful climbing-objects...HLIS07::VISSERSAd Vissers - CRG HollandSat Sep 26 1987 19:5117
    From Chanel's dictionary:

Screen = some *very* nice device put on a *very* interesting
place making it *very* possible to climb into it by
that beautiful raster that so *excellently* supports
your nails (wonder what Dad's making all that noise
about - that tears just make it looking nice..)

I've tried. But since I'm living three stores high that isn't very
    reassuring either....
I haven't yet found a screen that is sufficiently strong to support
even 6-kilo Omar (on some moments he tends to get into adventures).

But I'm still looking for a nice solution in this area, yes...

795.4How was I supposed to know it stings?BAGELS::ALLENMon Sep 28 1987 14:3234

I don't know if this helps at ALL, but, my cats are bug-chasers too.
During Sebastion's formative years, he did tangle with a wasp. The
apartment I lived in had wasps in the attic so that there were always a
few finding their way in through the windows - which were screened,
although I could never figure out how...

I remember once, one second seeing him swatting at a wasp, and I turned
my back to grab a newspaper to snuf its lights out before it stung
Sebastion - the next second, Sebastion came running in (he was out on
the balcony) and was shaking his head and running in circles. I don't
really know, but I assume he was stung in the mouth, and was trying to
deal with the discomfort. However, the good news is that he seemed to
recover within five or ten minutes. The bad news is he wanted to turn
right around and go back after it (REVENGE!).

The only thing I can say is that he has been exposed to wasps several
times - usually the wasp is smart enough to stay away from the cat,
because that is the only time I was aware that he got stung. I had
returned home many times to find wasps in the apartment, and most of
the time he was ignoring it, but sometimes was watching it or in the
process of chasing it. The only danger here is that you might come
home to find a very angry wasp in your apartment... Take it from me,
NOT fun. Anyway, the cat and I have both survived. Of course,
Sebastion has long fur, so the only place they could attack would be
    the face, or perhaps paw-pad.

But, I really don't know how cats deal with bee and wasp stings
or if it is serious. Like I said, I don't know that he was stung
for sure, but I also don't know why else he would act that way.

    Hope it helps.

    Amy.
